2. Project Concept
My initial idea was to create advertisements such as a tour date poster, magazine cover, double page spread and a photography portfolio.
Another aspect was merchandise which was going to be t-shirts, mugs, posters and hoodies. This was all to advertise a new upcoming female
musician with images that I had taken myself with a model in Harrogate where I have used different locations. However, it slightly changed when
I started production as I made created a album cover and back cover instead of creating merchandise. I thought the idea of an album cover was a
lot better than merchandise. I came to this conclusion when I created a t-shirt design and didn’t like the look of it as I thought it looked messy and
unprofessional.
I got most of my design inspiration from my questionnaire as I used three different images for each product to see which everyone liked the best.
The products were tour date posters, t-shirt designs, album cover and music magazine. On my first tour date poster I had used a similar lay out to
the Dua Lipa poster. For the magazine cover, I have taken some design ideas from theCamila Cabello NME cover with the position of the model.
Lastly, I didn’t take any ideas from the album covers as I wanted to create a whole new design myself.
Does your product meet my intention?
My intentions were to create new images and design different pieces of work from them. I believe my final product has met my intentions as I
have produced a tour date poster, a magazine cover, an album cover and back cover, photography portfolio and a double page spread. All these
pieces of work have different edits and looks to them. I think the best product is the album cover. I have not created am album cover before so it
was all new to me. But it was the most fun to create.
3. Research
This project I have got the chance to produce work that I enjoy. I choose to do create a new upcoming female musician, this meant I could produce
posters, magazine cover, double page spread, album cover and photography portfolio to advertise the musicians career to become successful. As I
already knew what I wanted to do meant I didn’t have to do draw up a mind map.The five headings for research were marketing, primary research,
secondary research, production and bibliography.
The main bit of research was looking at a variety of magazine covers, double page spread, tour date posters, album covers and backs and
photography portfolios to give me a guide of what kind of aspects should be on my work. This was a main strength of looking at different magazines
covers and double page spreads that are dissimilar as you get a feel for what you can add to it.
Another part of research was a questionnaire which proved to be useless as I didn’t get the results I wanted. The results I wanted were to get more
responses from females which was my mistake as I sent it out to everyone which I shouldn’t have. Another mistake I made coming up with the
questionnaire was not putting a text box underneath to say why they liked the images the best. An issue I had come to was with a name for the
musician. I picked three names (Lillie Mae, Natalie Reid and Lola) and added it to my questionnaire so then the audience could choose the name
which proved to be a good way of choosing. Next time, I would improve on my questionnaire before sending it out. This would effect my product
massively as the questionnaire would have more of a say on most of the products and what would be on them or how they look.
I looked at manyYouTube video on how to take photos of a model and how to dress the model. I think the video that helped me the most was ‘4
Photographers shoot the same model’ as this gave me inspiration for the backgrounds. The background that I used was two brick walls. In the video
there are four photographs with different ideas and take the model to areas where they want and the photographers have to use the space around
them. Also, they dress her up which didn’t help too much as the clothes the model was wearing were very out there and vibrant.
The model that they used was called Sydney J Harper who was part of inspirations after I had a look at her work on Instagram and watched videos of
her when four photographers took her around and took their own photographs of her in their own way and each photographer used the pace
differently.
4. Planning
I planned really well for this project. I had my inspirations who were Cindy Kimberly and Sydney J Harper who influenced my project
more at the beginning but because I had to change models, the influence didn’t really come through.
I had to contact loads of people to see who wanted to model for me. It took a long time but I got a lot of good responses. The way I did
this was through Snapchat and everyone who was interested messaged me. Some weaknesses were looking at locations but not using
them. If I ever did another photoshoot, I would like to use the locations that I have planned out as it would an interesting scenery and
would be more like professional photoshoot like the ones that I looked at for inspiration. I have gone back to my work and done an
updated planning which is all the things to do with the models.
When it came to fonts, I knew what kind of font I wanted to use. I wanted something that looked handwritten so then it looked like a
signature and it would look professional when I put it all over my work. I looked at colour schemes which worked with the first
photoshoot as I had similar colours. But when it came to the second photoshoot, I just used the colours from her clothes as the colour
scheme and it seemed to work really well.
5. Time Management
My time management has been hard this time round because of the switch of the models half way through my production. This
really threw me off as I only had 3 weeks left before the other model told me that she couldn’t do another photoshoot. In the
time I had though, I used wisely. Except the fact that In the last 2 weeks I had to produce a tour date poster, double page spread,
album cover, magazine cover and a photography portfolio. Some of the strengths of having that little bit of extra time was I
could get all my lay out ready so then I could just add my images to it. Except, I changed my idea too and decided not to do
merchandise and do an album cover instead because the design on a t-shirt was proving to be really hard.
Some weaknesses was just waiting around doing nothing. Also, another weakness was probably not getting my improvements
done as well soon as I got them and leaving them to the end. My deadline is Friday 7 June at 16:30. I believe I will reach this
deadline as I don’t have too much work anymore as I had to come into college in this last week and get on with it.The reason I
haven’t done this before is because I am usually working.
The main weakness is the fact that I planned really well and had everything sorted and was ready for the first photoshoot but
then it took a spun and the model turned ill and couldn’t do another photoshoot. I had to last minute plan which was hard to do
as every one was busy with work or their own school work.
6. Reflection
The way I reflected on my work was doing weekly reflective diaries. I don’t think this was the main strength of my whole project
as it’s really hard to reflect on your work and I always end up writing what I've done instead. However, when it came to
production it seemed to be a lot easier as I had more to talk about. Another way, is I got feedback from my tutor and from class
mates, this was very useful as it changed a lot of work when I started editing the photos. At the end, when I was improving some
of my work, I got feedback on things I could add to my work.
If I had to do this again, I would take longer to write and actually put some thought into it. I’m glad we didn’t have to do a diary
every day about what we’ve done because that would have taken up a lot of time like we had to for a last project.
7. Production
The very first photoshoot I used a lady called Molly, it went well and I got some good image and some of them turned out not so
good. I wanted to do another photoshoot with Molly but she turned really ill. This meant I was stuck and this was half way
through production. I had to ask around again and luckily a lady called Mimi was free to take some photos. After this, I asked
Mimi if she had three different outfits, weirdly both of the dresses she wears are blue. When I came back to college these photos
turned out better than the very first ones. I used flash with most of them, the weather was the good enough for photos. I used
Mimi’s back garden of her flat which she kindly let me use. I used a brick wall where there were leaves. After processing these
images and starting to edit them, I realised I needed some more photographs as all the photos I took had some sort of nature in
them. When I knew, I was going to do another photoshoot, I saw a white brick wall outside Mimi’s flat which was perfect for the
last photoshoot. The last photoshoot was mostly for the photography portfolio to add some colour. This time I got Mimi to wear
a red top which I let her borrow to wear for the photoshoot.
