2. Research
With the research I went onto google and found some fanzines ideas of what I could do
for my piece of work. I ended up not doing any of these ideas but then we got to look at
some fanzines in lesson and found one that had rotoscoping which I really liked the look
at. I don’t have any pictures of the fanzine that was handed out to get more ideas but I
started to get an idea of who I wanted to to do the fanzine about which was Frank
Ocean so I started to research about him. His early life and then how he got into music
etc. research is important when you are doing stuff like I was doing however because I
wanted my fanzine to be more focused on my rotoscoping so the text wasn't my main
focus but wanted some text to go with it as it would make it look more like a fanzine so
that’s what I did. The strengths are obviously find the information you are looking for
which i did on wiki as I told me his early life and then how he got into music and then
how his music has been doing which was helpful for my fanzine. The weaknesses to
research is that sometimes depending on what you were trying to find might not be that
easy as google doesn’t always answer your question so you have to word it differently or
really have to search for it in each link it gives you but usually its not that bad.
3. Planning
For planning I started to get all the information about Frank Ocean and put
in some kind of order i’m wanting my fanzine to be in. I wanted some
information about his childhood and how he got into music. I got all this
information from the internet wiki and YouTube videos of people saying
facts about him which helped a lot for putting this fanzine together.
I also went onto spotify to see how many people listen to his music, ich is
12,514,991 listeners. Also got information about what his albums got him
and there was his ‘Channel Orange’ album that won a Grammy award and
was debuted at number two on the billboard 200 and sold 131,000 copies in
its first week.
When I was researching I found out that he helped write songs for artists
and was featured in other artist songs so I had the idea to include them. I
ended up not including everyone that I had gotten images off especially the
featured songs as I was running out of time to do the rest so picked the ones
he was featured in a lot with that artist.
I didn’t include Calvin Harris, Kanye West, Earl Sweatshirt
4. Time management
With the time management I would personally say I timed it well as I knew I had a lot of rotoscoping to do so I
tried to do as many in a day to make sure I was up to date with everything. I did rotoscoping for most of the
weeks as I had so many to do and wanted them to look their best so too my time with them. The only time I
started to rush was when I realised that I didn’t have enough time near the end with having to miss 2 days of
college for year 11s coming in so I had to forget about a few of the rotoscoping's I wanted to do but if I had
them 2 days I might been able to do it but I think my work still looks good without the few I couldn’t do. So I
had to miss 3 people which I have included in the last slide to show who I missed, I would of done maybe but
because I had to also put the fanzine together there wouldn’t off been enough time to do them 3
rotoscoping's in detail and put it all together and look good so I thought it was best to finish where I did and
make the actual fanzine look good which I think I did. I still feel that I managed the time well though as I have
got it completed in time and looks good the way I have don’t it so im happy with the finishing look. However if
I did have more time I would obviously add them 3 artist that I didn’t have enough time for and then maybe
make the actual fanzine a little better as there's some double page spread sheet im not a huge fan off like the
ones that have a lot of blank spaces to them, I find them a little unorganised and a little empty so I would
maybe go back and sort them out to make it look even better.
5. Technical Qualities
I couldn’t find anything that looks like
my work but I have found some
images that have a resemblance like
number 1 its like the rotoscoping one
of mine of Frank on his own and the
rest. Number 2 I picked this one
4
3
21
because for my cover its got a lot of rotoscoping pictures
of Frank Ocean and I thought they looked similar by
having their images like that. Also with the name on the
existing product is like the one on mine as its behind the
images. Number 3 is different but it has a picture of the
rotoscoping which is what mines like with writing just in
a different layout but it was he closest thing I could get
as mine is different to others. As I have a coloured
backgrounds too as number 3 hasn’t got any. With
number 4 I picked this one because it had colours for
the background which mine do just as vibrant as that as
I chose pastel colours to be able to see my work.
6. Aesthetic Qualities
Does it look good? I personal think my work looks good because its got the same theme
throughout it all with the colours and the rotoscoping with them being in a circle and
the text about it all. It looks neat looking and nice to look at as it’s the same throughout
it all.
Was it creative? I think it does look creative as I couldn’t find something like this on the
interne as you can see from the slide before I had to get existing work that was a little
similar but there wasn’t anything like mine. I also think its creative because its
something different to just having their actual faces where I have edited it to be
rotoscoping which make it look nice to look at.
Strengths and weaknesses? The strengths for my work is the circles with the artist inside
them as it looks neater and just looks better on the page instead of it just being the
rotoscoping and then a circle behind it. Another strength is that the rotoscoping's are
very detailed making it look nicer to look at instead if them being plain and boring. I also
think the colouring to my fanzine is a good strength as it has colour to it than it being all
white and looking boring.
The weaknesses are that some of the pages are a little bare I wish I added a little more
but it was hard to make the images it in that way it is with the text in columns so that’s
why some of the pages are little simple looking but I would maybe add a little more text
but I wanted the fanzine to be mostly about the rotoscoping.
7. Audience Appeal
Does it appeal to my audience?
I personally think it does appeal to my audience because of the colours
and the theme of it. It’s focusing on a well known artist which my age
group are interested in so it will appeal to them a lot. I think as well its
different to other magazines/fanzines/books so it will appeal to my
age group because of that reasoning for it being different to other
products. Not a lot of my age read magazines etc., so by having more
images and less writing it will attract my audience as we are more
based on social media and like going on social media so I wanted to
make sire there were more images to look at then writing but what I
liked about adding the writing was because its about Frank ocean its
stuff about his childhood and how he got into music and how it all
started which is interesting facts rather it being a lot of text about
things that are just not important that my age group wouldn’t be
interested in.
