This document outlines plans for an FMP fanzine about art and illustration. It will include information on different art styles, techniques, and products, as well as interviews with artists. The fanzine will feature a variety of artists' works to avoid repetition. Fonts, color schemes, potential products to feature, pagination, and layouts are considered. The goal is to showcase different varieties of artwork and engage the audience through vibrant designs and matching colors.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. FMP Idea
For my FMP I am going to create a fanzine based around art and illustration. Talking
about the different types of styles and techniques, what kinds of products can be
made with these certain styles and even the authors/artists that create these
products/artwork (e.g. during my Contextual Research I found multiple interviews
where artists talk about their work. I could reference these interviews in my own work
at some point). I plan to also include a variety of artists/artworks so that it makes my
fanzine look more interesting and less repetitive if I were to just include similar looking
works.
The main reason I am creating this is to show off the different varieties of artwork and
artists as well as talk about the different kinds of products that can be made from this.
These different artworks I plan to use will all be different styles, so that I can avoid
making my fanzine look repetitive.
With this planning, I will decide on how many artists/artworks I can talk about in my
fanzine based on the time that I have and how long it will take me to make it.
3. Font(s)
I don’t plan on using a large variety of fancy and cursive
fonts for a large majority of my product, however I will
be using them for the titles of the pages in my fanzine.
The only times I will be using decorative fonts will be
for the main title of my fanzine (the front cover) or the
headings for my pages/any other content that requires
a title.
These screenshots are from my experiments. I liked
these different fonts I found since not only are they
cursive but also easy to read. I found that a lot of the
fonts I thought I would like and what I thought would
look good with my product turned out to be quite hard
to read and not what I had originally imagined it to
look like.
I think that these fonts are all quite similar in terms of
how cursive they look as well as the overall style.
I don’t think that my choice of font is the most
important aspect at this moment in time. I think this
because I would rather focus on creating the layouts of
my product and then sorting out the fonts I plan to use.
When I return to college, I will focus on creating the
layouts of my fanzine due to the updated software that
college has and then do the write-ups at home since
it’s something I’m easily able to do.
4. Colour Schemes
I think that a bright/vibrant colour scheme will best fit my final product. I think that the colour scheme of my
product should match with what product I’m talking about (e.g. if I talk about a product that uses bright colours I
should also use bright colours when dedicating a page to said product). This should make my product look the
most appealing because of the matching colour schemes. When looking into various colour schemes I found a
variety of charts dedicated to a particular film franchise from a company known as Studio Ghibli (e.g. the two
screenshots you can see above). I think that matching the colour scheme to the product I’m talking about is a good
idea because it will allow me to use a variety of different products and even colour schemes.
5. Colour Schemes
Since Sailor Moon is most well-known for it’s bright colours (especially a variety of shades of pink) I think that this
would also be the option for me when creating this particular page since I want my pages to match colour
schemes with the artworks/art styles that I would be talking about. My original plan was just to overlap text with
various images of the artists work for my pages but I didn’t think that this would look as good because there
could be a few issues. One of these could be that the either the image blocks some of the text or that the text
wouldn’t be seen clearly because of the image. I could avoid these problems by lowering the opacity of the image
in Photoshop so that you would be able to clearly see the text but also see the image as well.
6. This is how I want some of my pages to look. Using the
shape tools in Photoshop I can overlap shapes that match
with the colour schemes for the images I have chosen and
put the two together to create a background for the image. I
think that this would want to page look more interesting
rather just having some text with a single image.
7. Colour Schemes
Since I plan to talk about Shigenori Soejima’s art as a whole I thought that it could be a good idea to use
multiple colour scheme since he uses a different one for each of his games e.g. Persona 5 had a primarily red
colour scheme, Persona 4 was yellow and Persona 3 was blue. I think that this is good idea since it will allow
me to use a variety of different colours and showcase them onto these pages. I think that these pages in
particular will be the most detailed due to amount I am able to add since Shigenori Soejima has created
many products that all have different styles and colour schemes.
8. Colour Schemes
Similar to Studio Ghibli, Hirohiko Araki’s colour scheme as bright and vibrant. I found dedicated colour scheme
charts to each of the artist I plan to look into. From this I’m able to tell the colours Hirohiko has used for his work.
This is something I should definitely consider using. The colours I use really depends on the images I plan to
include in my fanzine. Since I plan to dedicate three double pages spread to each artist I would want each page to
have it’s own dedicated colour scheme.
9. Colour Scheme Analysis
What I mainly want for my fanzine to have is a matching colour scheme for each page for my different
artists. From my research I am clearly able to distinguish what colours are used repeatedly by each
artist (e.g. Studio Ghibli uses a range of bright and vibrant colours to help portray it’s often bright
films). I want to use these same colours in my fanzine not only because it will match aesthetically well
with each of my artists but also because it is something that my audience mentioned in my interviews.
Each of the colour schemes I plan to use are all vaguely different in their own way. I think that the
designs of my pages are what my audience will look to the most. In order to find these specific colours
I used a tool in Photoshop called the ‘Eyedropper Tool’, this allowed me to easily identify the colours
from the images I was planning to put into my fanzine pages. I think that the fonts I used in my
previous fanzine were a bit too simplistic but I don’t think that it took too much away from the final
product. I always struggle with being able to find fonts that not only match with my product as a
whole but also aren’t too simplistic or cursive. The images I have included in my colour schemes may
not be the images I use in my final product but since the artists I’ve looked into all use a similar colour
scheme for each of their works then I think that I would be able to use any sort of image. I didn’t get
the opportunity to conduct much experiments other than with fonts and with image alteration. This is
because at the time I didn’t have access to any suitable software to conduct the experiments and by
the time I had found something I could use I was already too busy with other work to go back and
create more experiments hence why there is a lack of them. However since I have already created a
fanzine before hand I don’t think that it was a matter of importance for me.
11. One product(s) that I would like to talk about
is various films from the Studio Ghibli
franchise. The reason why I would like to talk
about these particular films is because of the
colourful visuals as well as the amazing
soundtracks. But the most important reason is
because of the beautiful visuals and art styles
that comes with every film.
Another product is one that I have mentioned
previously in my contextual research. I’m only
familiar with one work from Aka Akasaka so
I’m not sure if I will include his other works
when I get to this particular part.
However I think that it will still be a good idea
to at least mention or compare his works to
give some kind of idea as to how his other
works look and how similar the art styles may
look. I hope to mainly talk about the various
art styles from his works (e.g. the styles and
colour schemes.
(Studio Ghibli)
(Aka Akasaka)
12. This is another product that I spoke about in my
contextual research. Much like with the work from
Aka Akasaka, I’m not that familiar with one of the
works from Hiro Mashima. However as said
previously, I should still at least mention those
products to give an idea as to what the
author/artist has created previously. It will be a
good idea to talk about the various art styles and
colour schemes the artist uses within their
products and how those help to convey their
works.
(Hiro Mashima)
(Shigenori Soejima)
This isn’t a product that I have mentioned
before. Recently I had found out that the
popular series Persona has had a variety of
manga illustrations through out the years. I
thought that it would be a good idea to
look into these due to the aesthetic
artwork and style that persona has always
had with their games and now with their
manga artwork.
13. (Kōhei Horikoshi)
(Naoko Takeuchi)
Another product I talked about in my
contextual research. I’m not too sure
about the other products that this
particular artist has published previously
however it is something that I should look
into before starting to talk about this
artist. As stated previously, it is a good
idea to talk about a variety of different
works from the artist in order to get a
good insight into the artist.
I think that this sort of art style is unique
compared to the other art styles I plan to
look at. Another reason is because it’s
from an older series compared to the
others. A lot of these manga series’ are
still on-going however this is the only one
I plan to look at that is completely
finished.

The Art of Illustration
similar to front cover
with a collage?
This is my rough planning for the front cover
and back cover of my fanzine. I plan to create
my front cover last so that I can maximize my
time with the creation of my pages to make
sure I don’t rush.
I would want to keep the same style consistent
through out my fanzine however as stated
previously, I want to make all of my pages
unique to the art style/artwork that I will be
talking about. This means that I won’t be able
to be as consistent as I would want to be but I
don’t think that it will effect my product.
Because of this I plan to talk about a variety of
different artists so that I’m also able to
potentially use a variety of different colour
schemes. Taking advantage of this idea will
allow me to create a product that uses a variety
of different colours and products. This will most
certainly appeal to my audience.
I am currently undecided on what I would like
to do with the back cover. It could be some
form of advertisement, a kind of illustration
that relates to my product as a whole. I will
decide this later on in the production phase.

Editors Note
I plan to include an editors
note that explains what my
fanzine is and what my
audience should expect.
I’m not too sure if I want my contents page to
be a double page spread or just have the two
pages be separate. I think that it will be easier
for me to potentially print my fanzine if I made
it a double page spread.
I think that adding an editors note is also a good
idea since it will allow me to briefly explain
what my product is and what my audience
should expect.
I would like my final contents page to look like
the one shown on this page. However I would
want to make it look neater and add potential
imagery to make it look more appealing. I think
that this example contents page is easy to
follow and read, meaning my audience would
have no trouble navigating through my fanzine.
I think that one of the only problems that I will
face with have with using a double page spread
is making sure that the two page are similar
looking (i.e. using the same colour scheme)
because I wouldn’t want to use two separate
colours schemes for two pages that will be put
together.

Because I’ve decided to add more pages
within my fanzine it meant that I have had
to rethink what I want my contents page to
look like and how I will be able incorporate
all of the information onto my page. Since I
have decided to add more artists I’m glad I
had decided to keep my original idea of
using a double page spread. This means
that I will have a lot of room to work with in
terms of a mix between imagery and text. I
think the image shown here is how I
imagine my contents page to look like in my
final fanzine.
Like the previous contents page I had
designed I still think that this is easy to
follow meaning my audience would easily
be able look through my fanzine. I think
that one of the only problems I could face
with this is managing the amount of text I
have to put into my contents page. Since
there are now a lot more artists I am talking
about I might have problems with having
too much text.

(brief explanation based on

How has Art and Illustration
changed over the years?
(more explanations)
I think that starting my fanzine with a sort of
brief introduction as to what I will be talking
about is a good idea since it will allow my
audience to get some form of understanding
as to what I will be talking about before I
begin to look into my chosen products.
I think that the first page of my fanzine is the
most important since it will determine
whether or not my audience will engage with
my product. This means that I will have to
make sure that this page stands out (i.e. the
use of different colours and imagery).
I think that a use of various colours and
imagery is one of the best ways to keep my
audience engaged with my fanzine. I will
designing the front cover and the back cover
last, so these two pages will technically be
the first pages I start working on.
When I am designing the layouts of my
fanzine I will be creating them in Photoshop
at college since it has the better updated
software.

This will be the start of the pages that look into
various artists or, in this case, studios that focus
of artwork (i.e. Studio Ghibli). I plan for each
artist I talk about to be around 3-4 pages so
that I can really go into detail about each
chosen topic.
The first page will start off with a brief
introduction to what I’m talking about (i.e. in
this case it will talk a bit about Studio Ghibli).
The second page is something I haven’t decided
on yet. I either want it to page another page of
text or a sort of collage full of images. I don’t
know if either is the best idea. This is because if
I were to just do another page full of text then
it would make the page seem crammed and
boring but if I were to do a collage on the next
page I’m not too sure if it would work well with
the first. I’m afraid that this will be a problem
that I will most likely face with every page in my
fanzine. I think that the first day of creating my
product will have a lot of trial and error.

This will be the third and fourth page of the first
topic I will be looking at. The third page will
focus on the different art styles that have been
used in various films (e.g. since this page is still
talking about Studio Ghibli I would be looking at
the different films and their art styles).
I think that this is one of the best options when
thinking about what to write with my columns.
This is because writing about a variety of films
instead of just one or two will always be the
better option since it will allow me to explore
the styles and colours in more detail. This means
that I’ll be able to write more.
I think that another option I can consider for the
final page is including some form of interview
that I have found which, of course, relates to
what I’m talking about.
I think that a good way to end the page is to
include some form of illustration of my own (i.e.
something similar to what I created in my
experiments or using sketching something and
then scanning it onto my product).

potential page dedicated to art?

said artworks)
Look into other artists own adaptations of these
artworks
After this I wanted to dedicate a full page to
artwork that I have found during my research. I
think that including a page full of imagery will help
to make the fanzine seem less repetitive and full of
text.
During my previous project when I created a
fanzine I found that a lot of my layouts were
repetitive and simplistic so I hope to try and avoid
this with my new ideas of having a mix between
imagery and text on each page.
I’m not too sure about the style of background that
I want my pages to have. However I have had the
idea of using artwork that is related to what I am
talking about on that specific page so that it
matches and looks more aesthetic.
I think that a use of bold and bright colours will
attract the audiences attention the most since
brighter colours always stand out more than darker
colours. Since a lot of the products I’m looking at
use bright and vibrant colour schemes I think that
my fanzine will look consistent.
21. Pagination – Updated
During the production process I found myself running out of time. This meant that there
were parts of my fanzine that I knew I wasn’t going to be able to finish or even start to
make. Because of this I had to remove some ideas I had wanted to put into my fanzine
and work with I already had. What I removed being the third double page spread that I
was going to make for each artist. Looking back on my work now I think that I should’ve
removed one of the other two double page spreads and continue with this idea because it
was the most interesting part of my product. Although I think that it was a bad idea on my
part to remove those pages from my fanzine and include something that I found was less
important I still don’t think that I would have been able to have gotten finished on time.
This is because I would have to have drawn illustrations for each of my artists, scan them
and import them onto my fanzine and then finish do the analyzing write ups for each. Had
I more time I think that I would have been able to do this.

the products that they have created. I don’t want to
go into too much detail since I think that the
information I have collected from my research
should belong in the second double page spread,
which is dedicated to the history and more detailed
information about the artist. I think that the first
page for each of my artists is important because it
will be the my audiences first impression of not only
the artist but with my fanzine as well. This means
that I must make it as eye-catching as possible in
order to keep my audience entertained. This is the
same for every page that I will be making.
I will be creating the pages and layouts in Photoshop
and then added text once I have exported them. I’m
not too sure what software I will use to do this but
I’m not too keen on using Photoshop because there
isn’t really a variety of fonts to choose from. Another
reason is that because the Photoshop I am using on
my laptop is so outdated it means I’m limited to
what I’m able to make without Photoshop crashing.

Since this particular artist is famous for one
specific series (unlike Studio Ghibli who is well-

dedicate this next double page spread to talking
about that series. I think that this will be a lot
easier for me to write since I only have to talk
about this one series. I have learned a lot from my
research which means that there is a lot I am able
to write about in my articles. However even
though I have all of this information I would like
to put into this double page spread I must make
sure that I’m careful that I don’t make the page
too crowded with text. This is something that
happened with me in my previous print project
and it’s something I would like to avoid. I want to
make sure that the imagery I include is related to

hadn’t I would have ended up with a fanzine that
has all similar looking pages. I think that this is one
of my favourite layouts because of the amount I
have been able to put onto this page e.g. the mix of
imagery and text. A problem I faced with this
particular artist is the amount of information I want
to include but don’t have necessarily have enough

designing my page layouts I used my interviews as

something that my audience would like and appeal

it’s something that I can always go back and redo

Since this page is dedicated to information I
think that the best option is to spread the text

This is because I wouldn’t want the text to be

the page look too crowded. I might end up
moving the text and imagery around in the

My main idea for this page is to use text boxes
that match with the images I plan to use on the

more intriguing and stylish compared to the
other pages I have made. Much like with the
other pages that focus on the history of the

the audience attention first meaning that this

images on one page. I may consider
doing this with other pages if I’m able to
think of any good ideas that I like.

introduction to the artist additional information
I didn’t think much at the start about
overlapping imagery with text but now I think
that this is a good idea that I want to try and
work with. The layout is similar to the
previous one in terms of how I plan to have
the text positioned. I would want the title to
be bold and stand out alongside the image. I
think that each page should represent the
artist and I think that this is something that I
am capable of doing. However instead of
having a collage of images I think that it
would be a better idea to have once big
landscape image. Since I am creating these
layouts in Photoshop on the laptop I have
borrowed from college I am limited to amount
I am capable of doing, since this particular
software is quite outdated compared to the
other computers at college. I think that the
best idea is to work with what I have and
make it to the best of my ability. Once I have
created the pages I can always go onto a
computer and add anything extra but I must
keep in mind that it won’t allow me to access
the file again from my laptop since it’s an
outdated version.
