This document describes a methodology for mining reference transaction data to aid in reference, instruction, outreach, and collection development activities. The methodology involves librarians recording data from reference interviews, cleaning the data, classifying questions by subject, and collating the data into spreadsheets and reports. This process has led to the creation of subject guides, targeted library instruction, and informed collection development decisions at their university library.

Transforming the Quality of Metadata in Institutional Repositories
Established in 2005, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries manages one of the largest and most-used institutional repositories in the country. It has approximately 95,000 unique items. There have been nearly 45 million full-text downloads of the works. It is powered by bepress. The staff consists of three faculty and one managerial-professional staff member. The repository hosts original journals, including: Library Philosophy and Practice, Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, Journal of Women in Educational Leadership, Manter: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity, RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences, SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education, and Contemporary Issues in Educational Leadership. The IR also hosts backlists or online sites for: Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council, Honors in Practice, Insecta Mundi, Great Plains Quarterly, Great Plains Research, Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings, Nebraska Law Review, Nebraska Bird Review, Nebraska Anthropologist, Cornhusker Economics, and Business in Nebraska. The Zea Books, the repositories imprint, has published monographs in areas of reference, bibliography, ornithology, modern European history, zoology, botany, art history, music history, Native American studies, and early childhood and language education. More than fifty Zea Books titles have appeared since 2006.
This presentation will cover the workflows that have been established for managing the identities (authority control) of journal authors, adding ORCIDs for authors and working on the quality of metadata in the institutional repository. It will explore the limitations of attempting to manage the identities of authors in an IR (i.e., the metadata template is limited, e.g., no cross references, no dates or qualifiers for names) . It will look at how users access the materials in the repository and why some may question if working on metadata quality is really necessary or sustainable in an IR. Finally, it will discuss the plan to create Nebraska Scholarly Commons, a repository for all four University of Nebraska campuses, and the possible impact on metadata.

New forms of usage data like altmetrics are helping librarians to make smarter decisions about their collections. A recent nationwide study administered to 13,000+ librarians at R1 universities shines light on exactly how these metrics are being applied in academia. This presentation will share survey results, including as-yet-unknown rates of technology and metrics uptake among collection development librarians, the most popular citation databases and altmetrics services being used to make decisions, and surprising factors that affect attitudes toward the use of metrics. This presentation will also offer actionable insights on how altmetrics are being paired with bibliometrics and usage statistics to form a more complete picture of “trending” scholarship that’s worth purchasing. Through sharing the survey results and opening up a discussion about the potential altmetrics hold for informing collection development, the presenters aim to provide a learning opportunity for attendees which will enhance their competencies for e-resource management, specifically, core competence for e-resource librarians 3.5, use of bibliometrics for collection assessment, and 3.7, identity and analyze emerging technologies.

The Road from Millennium to Alma: Two Tracks, One Destination
In 2016, two academic libraries migrated from Innovative Interface’s Millennium to Ex Libris’ Alma. Though both libraries came from a similar starting point in terms of library software, their migration environments were quite different: Colorado State University’s migration involved two campuses, CSU Fort Collins and CSU Pueblo, while Central Connecticut State University migrated with a newly-formed consortium comprised of 18 institutions. Even though both libraries share the same proprietary ILS, the environmental differences between the two libraries shape their experiences throughout the migration process. The presenters will share their libraries’ unique experiences while also addressing commonalities germane to the ILS migration process such as pre-migration data clean up, data migration, training, and designing workflows. Particular attention will be paid to the data migration process that details the extraction process along with coordinating these efforts. Because Alma is designed on a different concept than III’s Millennium, the redesign of workflows is critical prior to the final cutover to the new system. In light of this, the presenters will address the engagement of staff during these discussions along with their professional growth. In addition to explaining the technical aspects of this migration, they will also delve beneath the surface of the intellectual labor required for implementation and examine the psychological impact on all constituents who will use the new system for their daily work.

This panel addresses the application of bibliometric and scientometric methods applied in the assessment of journals and the research they publish.
The measurement of impact of scientific journals through citations has its origin in the documentalists activities at the late nineteenth century to organize the publications of specific areas. The unfolding of these efforts soon undertook quantitative approaches aiming at understanding trends which allowed us to establish, for example, the nucleus of journals and authors in the various areas, making it an important input for science historians and sociologists.
Regarding the treatment of scientific information, the essays of the first half of the twentieth century were materialized into a system that would offer a new form of information retrieval – in the diachronic sense – allowing to identify the relation that literature establishes from the publishing of an article. This relationship, which expresses the repercussion of a new knowledge in the literature, did not take much time to attribute the idea of scientific impact, whose expression occurs through citations. The citation index then revolutionizes the way of accessing literature in the second half of that century, at the same time as it becomes a unique source for impact indicators, which from there would represent the world science in evaluative processes around of the world.
At the turn of the twenty first century, many factors – such as subscription costs, the underrepresentation of the scientific literature of non-English-speaking countries, as well as the different practices of scientific communication among areas of knowledge – have given rise to initiatives aimed at broader sources of information, while at the same time facilitating free access to scientific information. However, besides the access issue, the already established need for impact measurement could not be ignored in order to provide the consolidated processes of evaluation of scientific output with more adequate indicators.
In this sense, it is necessary that the new information sources, taking advantage of the new methodologies proposed by the community specialized in quantitative methods of science evaluation, may contribute with indicators that make the assessment of national (Brazilian) scientific output more adequate to the national scenario. In doing so, it is hoped that the group’s discussions will contribute not only to evidence the best that has been produced locally, but also to allow scientific journals edited nationally, particularly those of the SciELO Network, to have their impact recognized, allowing circulation of global and inclusive scientific knowledge.

One Person, Many Responsibilities: An Analysis of Science and Technology Libr...
It seems to be common knowledge among library professionals that the duties of a librarian are diverse and numerous. What is not clear is how many different jobs a single librarian might be expected to perform. In the spring of 2008 I conducted a study to examine job posting on ALA JobList to see how many positions required various standard librarian tasks (reference, instruction, and collection development). I closely examined the science and technology librarian positions to count the number of responsibilities each position entailed. I found a range of between 10 and 28 separate responsibilities per job with an average of 16 different tasks per librarian. This was done by coding each job description using a consistent scheme that would quantify the various terminologies in each job posting.
I will be revisiting this study in the spring of 2009 to expand the data set and to see changes over one year. I believe it will again reflect the large number of tasks that an individual librarian is required to perform in a single job. It may also show a seeming increase in the number of responsibilities felt by many professionals in the field. This issue is very relevant to current and new professionals, who must evaluate and manage each new task they are assigned, and also to administrators in these areas, who must define job parameters and balance new services against shrinking budgets.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
