Online research guides are a common feature of the academic library’s web presence, but their design is often at odds with typical users’ information-seeking behavior, which centers around automated discovery tools and just-in-time information access. We present an early report on our work to revisit online guides creation at the NCSU Libraries, with a goal of making guide content easier to maintain and more compatible with current best practices in web content creation. Our project includes a comprehensive review of existing guides content; a plan for elevating and enhancing discoverability of core guides; establishment of best practices for guide creation; and novel changes to site architecture (currently being developed) that continue to provide the freedom to create open-ended content as needed.
Responsible metrics for research - Jisc Digifest 2016

Promoting Open Access and Open Educational Resources to Faculty

Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

Civitas Learning presents the findings of our survey conducted during the September 2014 Civitas Learning Summit, where more than 100 leaders representing 40 Pioneer Partner institutions gathered to share more on their work. The survey, distributed to all participants, resulted in 74 responses highlighting how this cross-section of higher education institutions are using advanced analytics to power student success initiatives.

Sonny Liston by Alexei
Sonny Liston was born in 1932 as one of 24 children. He grew up in a poor family where his father would beat the wives and children. Liston got arrested in the 1950s for attempted robbery and began boxing while in prison. He became the heavyweight boxing champion in 1962 by winning fights quickly, though not always with the first blow. Liston was an intimidating champion with enormous hands and no formal education, not knowing how to read, write, or use proper table manners. He mysteriously died in 1970.

Having the skills and strategies to read, learn from, and communicate with the Internet will play a central role in our students’ success in an information age. But how can we best measure these new literacies? This session explores some of the challenges associated with developing valid and reliable measures of the complex literacy strategies and dispositions required to search for, comprehend, and respond to information on the Internet. The presenter will first share task examples and student responses from several assessments developed to measure online reading comprehension and communication skills. Then, conversation will turn to a number of important issues to consider when developing online literacy assessments that are not only psychometrically sound, but also useful to both researchers and classroom teachers. Participants will have an opportunity to share their own thoughts about how we might rethink the ways in which we evaluate the skills, strategies, and dispositions associated with reading and learning online.

Using intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories, simulations, and frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback, The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) builds open learning environments that support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
One of the most powerful features of web-based learning environments is that we can embed assessment into, virtually all, instructional activities. As students interact with OLI environments, we collect real-time data of student work. We use this data to create four positive feedback loops:
• feedback to students
• feedback to instructors
• feedback to course designers
• feedback to learning science researchers
In this JumpStart Session, we demonstrate how OLI uses the web to deliver online instruction that instantiates course designs based on research and how the learning environments, in turn, support ongoing research. How have academic library and information technology organizations been contributing toward effective solutions? Some have embraced a path toward greater convergence of IT and library services. Has doing so enabled institutions to adjust sooner and more quickly to shifts in our higher education environment? Has it stimulated innovation? Has it helped eliminate duplicative effort?
