Question 2
How are social groups represented in
my media text?
• Through the use of image and text, I have
represented the social group of ‘emo’ which is
commonly portrayed in music magazines such
as kerrang! And RockSound.
Stereotypes
Emos are stereotyped as:
• Wearing dark clothes
• Depressive
• Eccentric dark makeup
• Long, dirty looking hair
• Lively, exaggerative gestures
My product
Costume
The use of dark clothing was used to portray a
stereotypical emo. There was also the use of
band t-shirt which is stereotypically
commonly found on emos. This also shows the
audience the type of bands that will be
discussed in the magazine.
My product
Makeup
Dark makeup was used to portray a
stereotypical ‘emo’. Her dark eyes and lips
connote death which is a common theme
associated with ‘emos’. You can also see by
her facial expression that she is feeling
negative which conforms with the stereotype
that emos are depressive.
My productColours
The bright colours of the font has challenged the
stereotype of an emo which is usually
associated with dark colours. I did this to
represent a wider audience of ‘scene’ who are
usually stereotyped as really bright colours. I
did this to appeal to the widest target
audience possible to increase sales and profit
for my magazine.
My productModel
My model fits the look of a stereotypical ‘emo’. S
he has long dirty looking hair and is posing on
a grubby brick wall which is also a denotation
of an ‘emo’
My product
My model is positioned in the
center or on the left hand side
which forces my audiences
attention on her focusing on the
representation of emo
