Reimagining the Library in the Wake of Technology Terra Jacobson

  8. Portable Content Creation Mobile media labs make the portable creation of content possible. Students, Staff and Faculty need options to create on the go. Now the simpler it can be the better, but the content itself needs to be of a high quality. Not always convenient to stay in the library. Many students use iPads from our library – Language classes, but sometimes they need to create instructional videos Lecture capture equipment includes: Laptop, tripod, webcam and microphone. We have purchased 3 of these kits to check out from reserve (about 6 time per month). Great for faculty wanting to flip the classroom. Speech practice
  9. Media Production Stations The Media Lab could consist of several PC (64-bit) workstations, and several Apple workstations. This would give students a large choice on the software they have access to. The Apple iMac would contain iMovie for video editing, and the PC workstations would contain Windows Live Movie Maker (this must be installed separately but at no cost). The iMac would also contain other software, such as Garage Band for creating music or editing audio. Audacity, another audio recording software, could be installed on Windows machines and the Macs. Screen capture software on both systems, such as Camtasia or Screencast-O-Matic, would be a beneficial resource depending on the student’s project. Blender and Sketchup are both free software available for Mac and PC that allow for the creation of 3D objects. Sketchup in particular is recommended, as it is designed for the non-tech-savvy users looking to do more 3D work. If these computers are going to be available for editing pictures and for design work, Adobe software (including Lightroom and Photoshop) should be made available. Other software for editing pictures includes GIMP and Paint.NET, but neither provide a comparable level of functionality when comparing it to the Adobe Suite. Purchasing the Adobe Creative Cloud would provide access to all the software, including Premiere Pro and After Effects for the more advanced video editor. Depending on preference, some computers can be equipped with more advanced software (such as Adobe Suite) and some can be reserved for basic editing. Both Mac and PC computers should be equipped with the latest versions of all plugins, including Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave Player, Java, Microsoft Silverlight, and QuickTime. In addition, computers should have a reliable video player installed such as VLC Player. We would not recommend installing Microsoft Office on these computers in an effort to save them for students working on media projects. Kits to check out Students should have access to media kits that consist of audio and video equipment that they can check out from the library. Each kit would contain a small HD digital video camera (with SD cards), a USB cable (to transfer footage to a computer), a small tripod, and a small condenser shotgun microphone. The cameras should also have a USB port to allow students to remove their files without removing the SD cards. Based on reading the faculty feedback provided and from our own experience, this should be enough equipment for most students to produce a quality video project. Space Students in focus group wanted places to practice and film speeches for class. Req. for some of our COM classes. And Rooms to film and use the equipment we checkout.

Discuss what options have been suggested Optional items for checkout can include a collapsible/portable Chroma key backdrop, a softbox lighting kit, a Wacom tablet, a Go Pro Camera with accessories, a digital still camera (for pictures), a digital field recorder, and additional microphones, such as wireless lavaliere microphones, and an easy-to-use USB condenser microphone for audio recording.
