2. In the video ‘Can’t be Tamed’, Miley wears a number
of different edgy yet modern outfits. Each outfit fits
in with each different location. For example, she
wears a black leotard with massive black wings and
twigs in her hair in the clips where she is in a bird
cage. Or she wears a green/silver scaled dress with
feathers on the end in the clips were she is laid on a
peacock backdrop. The dancers are dressed in
bright colours that have been made to look more
‘grunge’ than normal to fit in with the rock pop
genre.
Similarly in Since U Been Gone, Kelly Clarkson
wears a number of different outfits which relate to
the location. In the clips with the apartment style
setting she is wearing clothes that look like
‘loungewear’. Similarly in the concert setting she is
wearing black, edgy clothes to reinforce the rock
element.
3. In the video ‘Can’t be Tamed’, the lighting
is kept fairly dark and low key. However
there are bright lights that appear in the
frame to make it appear like she is on
display at the museum – enhancing the
narrative. The overall low key lighting
further promotes the Rock Pop genre.
In ‘Since U Been Gone’, there was a mix
of high key lighting and low key lighting.
The clips in the apartment try to appear
as if its natural lighting, however as it
will have been filmed in a studio, there
will be lots of lights on her producing
high key lighting. This is contrasted in
the lower key lighting at the concert
scenes. This definitely portrays
conventions of the rock pop genre.
4. ‘Cant Be Tamed’ focuses on a lot of
edgy makeup as shown here. This is
partly to make Miley stand out more
than the other characters, but is also to
reference the concept of birds and
creatures.
‘Since U been gone’ shows more
natural makeup in the apartment
setting as its supposed to replicate a
real life apartment. However at the
concert setting Kelly Clarkson is
wearing stereotypically ‘rock n roll’
makeup with dark Smokey eyes.
5. ‘Cant Be Tamed’ contains a lot of
choreography which is typical for
the rock pop genre. Miley Cyrus
(the main artist) joins in with the
choreography.
Whilst ‘Since U been gone’ does
not contain any official dance
routines, there is typical moves
during it which connotes the rock
pop genre. For example, Kelly
Clarkson holds onto the
microphone whilst singing into it
and looks directly at the camera.
Also, there is fist pumping shown
through the audience which is
typical for the rock pop genre.
6. ‘Cant Be Tamed’ contains a section at
the start of the video that is not the
song, but explains the narrative of
the song. The rest of the video and
the lyrics of the song then reflects
the narrative throughout, keeping
the audience engaged.
‘Since U Been Gone’ contains a
narrative also throughout. The lyrics
reflect this. Also, the video cross cuts
from the concert scene to the
apartment scene which is the part of
the video that tells the narrative.
There are close ups of items e.g.. The
locket which the audience then infer
that it was a present from her ex
boyfriend.
7. Miley Cyrus was the main artist in
this video. Therefore in 90% of the
frames she is central or on the left
hand side. Not only does she have
the most screen time, but her outfits
are more flamboyant and her
makeup is more ‘out there’ which
also makes her stand out against the
back up dancers.
Kelly Clarkson is the main Artist in
the video. She is also in 90% of the
shots framed central or on the left
hand side. She also looks right out to
the audience by looking through the
camera. This gives synthetic
personalization and therefore she
builds up a relationship with the
audience.
