2. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Age
My magazine was designed with teenagers/young adults in mind. My media product represents teenagers as being
rebellious and not caring about life’s problems. This is shown in the images as different models are photographed
smoking, which is linked with death.
My media product also represents young adults being aggressive which is associated with punk culture and anarchy. This
can be seen in my media product in the images used.
The subject in this photograph looks aggressive as he is staring straight at the camera whilst biting a microphone and
pulling apart guitar leads.
The live image shows teenagers moshing (pushing each other and bouncing around)which is aggressive and energetic which
represents this social group as being destructive.
Also, in some images the people in them are messing about which shows that young adults are still not mature and are
care-free.

Gender
The stereotype that rock music is a male dominated genre is shown in my media product. This was achieved in the
photographs that I used.
These two images show the ratio of males to females. “Rock” bands are stereotypically formed of males whereas the image
on the left shows a female character. However it could be argued that she is on the end of the row which shows that
she has less power.
The image below contrasts with this as it shows the female in the foreground which could represent power. The smoke
covers her face however which could be trying to mask her identity (which a lot of people in the rock music industry do
e.g. piercings/tattoos).
Overall my media product represents “rock” music being a male orientated genre.
The contents page shows this clearly as there is only one female character compared to the four male characters.
The female character also looks very feminine which contrasts with the aggressive-looking male characters; this backs up
the stereotypical gender roles.

Class
My media product represents the working class social group. This is shown
with the images of beat-up, broken equipment. The language used on the
double page spread also represents the working class social group as slang
and swear words are used which are associated with working class. The
font is also messy and looks vandalised which is linked to working class as
the stereotypical working class person is linked to crime.
The image of the poster on the front cover is seen to be stuck to the cover
with tape. This shows that my media product has a “scruffy” appearance
which is linked to working class people. The costumes worn also back up
this scruffy appearance e.g. ripped shoes, wearing a hood, worn/old
clothes.
5. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Ethnicity
My media product represents “rock” and “punk” music as being a stereotypically White genre.
This is shown in my magazine as there are no Black or Asian characters photographed.
However, my media product represents young, white teenagers as being scruffy, destructive and
“a menace to society” (which is an aim of the “punk’ social group).
