Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Social Group
Emergent service sector - This is the social group I have designated my magazines style around.
This social class is towards
the lower end of the scale
in terms of earnings and
has a lower educational
rate.
They are from a working
class background, where
more struggles with money
are common.
The age of the audience is more towards a elder teenage/young adult group. e.g. 17-22.
My magazine represents the
more reckless type of people
who drink and stay up all
night while rebelling from
their parents/the normal type
of behaviour.
The magazine isn’t designed to stop influence of
drinking/drugs/rebellious actions, it’s to be
realistic of the music industry. Many magazines
cover up the reality of music stars and I wanted
to go against the typical magazine. Although rock
magazines usually don't follow convention, my
magazine represents everything the music
industries cover up.
The class my magazine represents is C2-E.
The gender is mixed, although there’s only female pictures on the magazine, the context aims to men and wom
The ethnicity represents white British
people as the stereotypically view of
rock music would be white British
people where as hip hop music is
stereotypically targets a black
ethnicity.
Emergent service sector social group are relatively
poor but have a reasonable household income.
They’re usually bar staff or assistants etc.
The bright colours represent the social
group as they connote danger and
energy. Stereotypically rock star
concerts and lifestyles are energised
along with the sense of danger as
drugs and alcohol is often used. My
cover star represents this stereotypical
view as the pull out quote reads
“before the show I always have a
drink..” This represents the social
group as people who have a drink on a
regular basis to have fun and help stay
energised.
The image represents my social
group as she has glasses on
which keeps her hidden and a bit
secretive. This portrays the
image of my social group as their
the more secretive type, their
people who like wearing glasses
in order to remain their persona
to themselves giving the idea of
secrets. Also the unconventional
of the glasses shows how the
social group don't care about
going against the natural rules.
The plugs represent my social
group as the context applies to
what they’d like to red about. The
top 50 gigs represents my social
group as they are they type of
people who would want to see
what gigs are on this year, where
they are, how much the tickets
are and whose playing.
The quote of Meg Jude represents my social group as it shows how reckless they are.
Having a drink before going on stage would be seen as a bad thing to do and not
many music stars would do it. My social group are the type of people who don't
follow other crowds/people.
The free posters represent the social
group as they don't have much money
and are the type of people who would
hang posters in their rooms of their
favourite rock stars.
Front cover
The house style
colours represent the
social group as they
are a grunge style
with the dark and
lighter grey. My social
group are the style of
people who don't like
wearing or owning
brightly coloured
things.
The pictures represent the
social group as they're darker
colours and the stars are
wearing grey or black colours.
There’s also a sense of
mystery in the images. The
pictures are unconventional
therefore they’re coming
across rebellious. This
represents my social group as
they don't do as others say,
they don't follow other people,
they’re a bit different and
unexpected.
The subjects
represent my social
group as they’re
honest. My magazine
represents people
who speak the truth,
only want to her the
truth and have a
suspicion of things
which aren't true.
Contents page
Double page spread
My double page
spread
represents my
social group as
the style of it is
very grunge
like,
representing the
atmosphere of
the social
group.
The polaroid
picture
represents the
social group as
polaroid
cameras have
become more in
fashion lately,
often they’re old
fashioned.
The polaroid frame gives the magazine an original style, it doesn't
follow convention which also represents the social group as they’re
people who are different and don't follow the crowd. The picture is a
candid shot in a un-particular area creating a suspicious mood.
The image in
the centre of
the article
represents the
social group as
they’re the type
of people who
can be
aggressive
when need be.
The pull quote
represents my
social group as
they’re people
who are
emotionally cut
off and can act
in aggressive
ways because of
this.
