My thoughts and proposals for a Quality Education in a digital world, as I shared them in 2009, at the first assembly of the Open Learning Exchange (OLE) in Kathmandu, Nepal.
OLE (http://www.ole.org) is an international organization whose goal was to make Quality Universal Basic Education accessible by 2015 to hundred millions of children worldwide. In 2009 I was invited to participate and speak (see slides below) to the first OLE International Assembly in Kathmandu. I have already reported about what I learned at the assembly in these articles:
We are an EDUTECH company passionate about building platforms to enable QUALITY EDUCATION. We are a committed team of researchers and practitioners from IIT Kanpur mentored by professors with decades of experience in education. The startup is currently incubated at SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre at IIT Kanpur.
We have developed an intelligent next generation analytical solutions EMPOWERU & DISHA for Higher Education & Government Schools respectively.
“DISHA” is a QUALITY EDUCATION initiative implemented in Giridih District, Jharkhand to improve the learning outcome of students and strengthen the link between teachers and students across the district through e-governance. The mobile application facilitates to track teacher’s & student’s absenteeism, monitor school learning conditions, implementation of government schemes and leave application at the school level while the web portal allows analyzing the above parameters to better decision making.

Bridging the digital divide: academic skills and digital literacies to suppor...RichardM_Walker
This presentation reflects on recent developments in the adoption of technology enhanced learning (TEL) tools within the UK higher education sector - in particular the rise of student-controlled and creative technologies to promote information, knowledge-sharing and networking in learning and teaching activities. Current generations of students are now arriving on campus with the expectation that their technologies will seamlessly interconnect with university services and support a flexible and personalised learning experience - engaging them in collaborative knowledge creation activities and developing their learning as producers of ‘content’ (Generation ‘C’). Drawing on the most recent sector-wide research (Jisc, 2017; UCISA 2018), this paper discusses the impact of these technological developments on academic practice – specifically the scope that learning technologies now present for innovation in the delivery of the taught curriculum.

Why is education so resistant to change? Over the next decade will it undergo as radical a transformation as the music industry? If so, it will have to face some of the same issues, such as preserving copyright and maintaining quality, and also some unique ones such as assessing learning in the field and bridging the gap between formal and non-formal education. We urgently need to address these issues if learning is to meet the challenges and opportunities of the mobile age.
As we have just started, we do not yet have many results from this research programme. Let me close this presentation with the results of one particular study on the effects of digital picture books in pre school education that we are – modestly – happy with. Typically, pre-school children typically learn two to three new words each day. Research done by Sardes has revealed that this number can be increased to 5-6 new words each day by using digital picture books. The best results are had when normal picture books are combined with digital picture books: the teachers reads aloud from the normal picture book, and children practice the new words learned with the digital picture book.
The Four in Balance model says that successful implementation of ICT in schools for learning requires at least that four general conditions are met.
