PRIMARY EDUCATION 4 – 11

A modern foreign language is now compulsory at key stage 2

What did the Dearing report (1997) recommend?
The intention is that from 2010 every seven-year-old in
England will have to begin to learn a modern language. It will
become part of the national curriculum from the age of seven
to 14.
SECONDARY EDUCATION 11-16

 In 2002 the government abolished compulsory
     modern foreign languages for G.C.S.E.

oFrench is down by 6.6% which represents 13,252 entries
oGerman by 4.2% or 3,226 entries
oSpanish remained stable with only 22 fewer entries
