4. Concept of sociology
Educational sociology is study of the social factors that influence and are influenced by all
educational structures and processes, both within and between societies.
Meaning of sociology
Education is a social institution through which a society’s children are taught basic
academic knowledge, learning and cultural norms
Sociological Roles in Education (conservative, critical and creative)
Conservative
Nisbet, a conservative and a sociologist, contends that society – composed of groups and
communities –is an essential mediator between the individual and the state. Conservatism is
committed to protecting society from the challenges posed by both collectivism and radical
individualism
5. Critical
Critical sociology is an international peer reviewed journal that publishes the highest quality original research. The
journal seeks to engage and promote critical thinking by publishing articles from all perspectives broadly defined as
falling within the boundaries of critical or radical social science
Creative
Creativity is a key element of cultural production but has been under-theorised in sociology. The latter coalesce to
constitute a creativity assemblage’ that establishes the limits of a body’s creativity in a artistic production.
Technological innovation and knowledge development.
6. Social functions of Education
Socialization
As they grow up, children must be introduced into the culture they live in. Schools and
collages provide the children with instruments of knowledge – how to read, write, do
math, etc., but also expose them to social values, principles, and norms. Even though
individuals learn a lot from their family and friends, they learn more about the culture of
the society they belong to through the educational system.
Development of personality
Schooling supports the development of certain qualities of an individual, along with his
temperament and character. The essence of our personality evolves through our
interaction with other people. As a result, our habits, qualities, attitudes, and principles
are shaped by the process of education.
7. Social control
Education has the power to regulate the behavior of an individual through communicating beliefs and values to future
generations. Through schooling, society controls the behavior of its members and builds up accordance with its norms.
Younger generations have complied with and abide by social norms and understand that violating these norms may result in
punishment.
Social inclusiveness
By transferring values, education also integrates individuals into broader society. The educational programme, together with
its after-school activities and the friendly relationship among students and teachers convey some important values and social
skills, namely team-spirit, respect, justice, and cooperation. Education helps socialize children and get them ready for their
prospective entrance into the larger society once they grow up. Our character and personality, and the paths we choose to
take later in life are all shaped by the educational system we are put in as children. That’s why it is crucial for our educational
system to be supportive and strengthen our knowledge, skills, as well as develop our personality and attitudes in a favorable
manner.
