main theories have been developed in an effort to best explain both the existence of the self and how it
can persist through any period of time. Some follow on Rene Descartes theory, where the soul can be
assigned the role of the self. Others prefer the one John Locke had proposed, where the self and
memory are related. Others still argue that animalism, the view that the person body and the self are
the same entity, is a better explanation. Then there are those who follow on the Buddhist teachings of
the Anatta, a theory that argues against the very idea of the self. Amongst these four main theories, the
Buddhist theory of Anatta, the idea that the self does not exist, is arguably a better explanation of the
self, for it is less problematic than the others can be.
The initial problem in theorizing over the matter of the self is found in the idea of individual
continuity, of persistence in more than just qualitative features over time. In the most intuitive of

Tougaloo Students of certain religions have a lower premarital sex rate then students of other

Socrates (467 399) was the first poor philosopher. He is well known for dialoguing and entering into
study by asking questions, which is the basis for the Socratic Method. Also known for vehemently
speaking out againstwriting, Socrates never wrote any of his philosophies down. He believed that
writing made people intellectually lazy, and instead of expanding their capacity for memory, made it

smarter. It has long been held that learning a musical instrument also helps develop the brain
differently, and can improve math ability specifically. Over the past two decades people have
wondered whether or not the Mozart effect really works. Will listening to classical music or learning
how to play an instrument increase a person s intelligence? If so, how does it affect a person s

Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven were considered geniuses and they are both composers

When people come to America, they come because the want to live the American dream. But what
actually is the American dream? Does it truly exist? When one thinks of the American dream they
instantly think of the Declaration of Independence because they too also believe that all men are
created equal but also believe in the beauty of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. United States
citizens as well as immigrants, believed in what the declaration had said and that it would push them
closer to an experience of the American dream. Though people are excited to move towards a better
life, they become a bit hesitant because they do not know exactly what the American dream is, nor do
they know if all people are granted the same chance towards the American dream due to their age,
race, their social status, traditions and any other factors. John Adams once stated that this American
dream we speak of should give a better life to everyone but only according to their ability. To me this
means that everyone deserves a better life but we cannot just give you everything, you have to show
what you can do, and how far your American dream goes depends on you, your ability, and how hard
