1. Relative humidity
The loss of water vapour from stomata occurs by simple diffusion. When the atmosphere is very
humid, the rate of loss of water vapour is lowered.
Wind:
When the wind velocity is high, rate of transpiration also increases.
Temperature:
Warm air hold more water vapour so the rate of loss of water increases with increase in
temperature.
Light:
Opening and closing of stomata is regulated by light. More light result in high degree of
transpiration.
Soil water content:
When there is less water content in the soil , the leaf droops / get dehydrated making the stomata
to close resulting in less rate of transpiration.
Carbon dioxide concentration
When the concentration is high, stomata closes resulting in low rate of transpiration and vice
versa.
Plants defense mechanism against water loss
Plants require water for it\'s survival. So it will have to regulate water loss ( especially during
drought) .
Several leaf adaptations help to combat water loss.
Leaf arrangements play important role, transversely arranged leaves loss more water than
perpendicularly arranged ones.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.

2. What is Transpiration? Transpiration is the evaporation of water from plants. It occurs chiefly at the leaves while their stomata are open for the passage of CO 2 and O 2 during photosynthesis.

4. Gas Exchange in Plants In order to carry on photosynthesis, green plants need a supply of carbon dioxide and a means of disposing of oxygen. In order to carry on cellular respiration, plant cells need oxygen and a means of disposing of carbon dioxide (just as animal cells do).

7. Leaves The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the leaf (as well as the loss of water vapor in transpiration) occurs through pores called stomata (singular = stoma). Normally stomata open when the light strikes the leaf in the morning and close during the night.
10. Environmental factors that affect the rate of transpiration 1. Light Plants transpire more rapidly in the light than in the dark. This is largely because light stimulates the opening of the stomata (mechanism). Light also speeds up transpiration by warming the leaf.
11. 2. Temperature Plants transpire more rapidly at higher temperatures because water evaporates more rapidly as the temperature rises. At 30°C, a leaf may transpire three times as fast as it does at 20°C.
12. 3. Humidity The rate of diffusion of any substance increases as the difference in concentration of the substances in the two regions increases.When the surrounding air is dry, diffusion of water out of the leaf goes on more rapidly.
13. 4. Wind When there is no breeze, the air surrounding a leaf becomes increasingly humid thus reducing the rate of transpiration. When a breeze is present, the humid air is carried away and replaced by drier air.
14. 5. Soil water A plant cannot continue to transpire rapidly if its water loss is not made up by replacement from the soil. This immediately reduces the rate of transpiration (as well as of photosynthesis). The volume of water lost in transpiration can be very high.
