Passive Voice
Use of the passive voice:
- We use the passive voice when we don’t know who has carried out
an action.
- We use the passive voice when we want to give more importance to
what happened tan to who has carried out an action, or when we
don’t want to say who did it.
Form of the passive verb:
Passive verb tenses identify the time of the action in your sentences. To not confuse the
passive verb tenses with the passive voice. While writing in the passive voice requires the
use of passive verb tenses, tenses refer to the time of the action, and voice refers to how
verbs tenses function with respect to a sentences subject. Writing in the passive voice is
only done through the use of passive verb tenses, with each identifying when in time the
passive action takes place.
Passive verb tenses are created by using the past participle form (expresses passive action)
of a verb preceded with a “to be” verb. Sometimes linking verbs a used as well. For most
regular verbs, the past participle is created by adding “en” or “ed” to the end of the verb.
The ending for irregular verbs differs depending an the verb’s past participle form. When
using passive tense verbs, the object of the verb is reciving the action of the verb. The
subject of the verb is not always present in the sentence, and when it is included, it
generally appears later in the sentence.
Examples 1:
- Present passive tense  “The students are taught by finding
solutions to real-world problems”.
- Simple past passive tense  “The students were reprimanded for
their actions”.
- Present perfect passive tense  “The dancers have been notified
regarding their acceptance into the show”.
- Past perfect passive tense  “The students had been excited about
the meeting since the idea was presented”.
- Future with will ( simple future passive tense)  “Sarah’s grades will
be posted at the end of the semester”.
- Going to future (simple future passive tense)  “Sarah’s grades are
going to be posted at the end of the semester”.
Examples 2:
- Modal verb  passive modal + be + past + participle
1. Must: Must pay (active)  must be paid (passive verb) 
“Workers must be paid an the last day of the month”.
2. Can: Can see  can be seen  “That painting can be seen in
the Louvre”.
3. Shoul: Shoul do  should be done  “The work should be
done on time”.
Active to passive transformation. Changes in the
sentence.
Example sentence: The dog bit the man  Active
Step 1: “The dog bit the man”
- Find the object of the verb (the man)
- Make the object the subject of the new sentence: The man…
Step 2: “The dog bit the man”
- Decide which tense the verb is in “Simple Past”
- Put the verb “to be” of this tense (look to see if the subject singular or plural):
The man was…
Step 3: “Bite Bit Bitten”
- Write the participle of the verb ofter the verb “to be”: The man was bitten…
Step 4:
-Decide if you want to include the agent in the sentence: The man was bitten by
the dog.
Choose 5 sentences in the active voice and turn them
into passive voice
1. They will tell you when the time comes  You will be told (by
them) when the time comes.
2. She will accept the offer  The offer will be accepted by her.
3. I will finish the job by Monday  The job will be finished (by me)
by Monday.
4. I will prepare the dinner before you came  The dinner will be
prepared (by me) before you came.
5. You will never forget this lesson  This lesson will never be
forgotten by you.

  • 2. Use of the passive voice: - We use the passive voice when we don’t know who has carried out an action. - We use the passive voice when we want to give more importance to what happened tan to who has carried out an action, or when we don’t want to say who did it.

While writing in the passive voice requires the use of passive verb tenses, tenses refer to the time of the action, and voice refers to how verbs tenses function with respect to a sentences subject. Writing in the passive voice is only done through the use of passive verb tenses, with each identifying when in time the passive action takes place. Passive verb tenses are created by using the past participle form (expresses passive action) of a verb preceded with a “to be” verb. Sometimes linking verbs a used as well. For most regular verbs, the past participle is created by adding “en” or “ed” to the end of the verb. The ending for irregular verbs differs depending an the verb’s past participle form. When using passive tense verbs, the object of the verb is reciving the action of the verb. The subject of the verb is not always present in the sentence, and when it is included, it generally appears later in the sentence.
  • 4. Examples 1: - Present passive tense  “The students are taught by finding solutions to real-world problems”. - Simple past passive tense  “The students were reprimanded for their actions”. - Present perfect passive tense  “The dancers have been notified regarding their acceptance into the show”. - Past perfect passive tense  “The students had been excited about the meeting since the idea was presented”. - Future with will ( simple future passive tense)  “Sarah’s grades will be posted at the end of the semester”. - Going to future (simple future passive tense)  “Sarah’s grades are going to be posted at the end of the semester”.
