During this time Arnold wrote the bulk of his most famous critical works, Essays in Criticism (1865) and Culture and Anarchy (1869), in which he sets forth ideas that greatly reflect the predominant values of the Victorian era.

Abraham Cowley (pronounced Cooley) was born in London, the posthumous son of a wealthy London stationer. He was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his BA in 1639, was made fellow in 1640, and became MA in 1643. Cowley published his first volume of verse, Poetical Blossoms (1633), when he was 15. The collection consisted of five poems, one of which Cowley had written at age 10. He wrote a pastoral drama and a Latin comedy, Naufragium Ioculare (1638), when he was but 20.

2. What is metaphysical poetry ?
A group of poets emerged in the beginning of
the seventeenth century, whose poetry come
to be known as the metaphysical poetry.
Metaphysical :- literally ‘meta’ means beyond
and ‘physic’ means physical nature.

The made conscious attempt to differ by displaying
their learning and scholarship in their poems. They
were highly learned and they tried to prove their
learning through their poetry.
4. Conceit :- a particular type of metaphor or simile.
For example:-
“ If they be two , they are two so,
As stiff twin, compasses are two
Thy soul the fixed foot, makes no show
To move, but doth, if th’other do.”
5. • They use figure of speech excessively. For instance,
“you are as slow as a snail.”
• Their similes and metaphors are far fetched and are
often drawn from unfamiliar source.
• Their images are logical and intellectual rather than
sensuous or emotional.
6. “ Images taken from field of knowledge, science,
agriculture, geography, history, astronomy, chemistry,
architecture, geometry, mathematics, biology, medical
etc. ”

The use of such images makes their poetry difficult.
