- 1. Person- Perception and Nonverbal Cues
- 2. Person perception refers to a general tendency to form impressions of other people. Indirect and Direct PP Some forms of person perception occur indirectly & require inferring information about a person based on observations of behaviors or based on second-hand information.
- 3. Person Perception focuses on the process by which impressions, opinions or feelings about other persons are formed. (Backman,1964). Person Perception refers to the way individuals focus on specific traits to form overall impression of others.
- 5. Nonverbal Cues of Communication
- 6. Nonverbal communication is defined as the process of using wordless messages to generate meaning. Nonverbal communication includes all unwritten and unspoken messages, both intentional and unintentional. Non verbal communication refers to gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice eye contact etc.
- 7. Its not the words that you use but your nonverbal cues or “body language” that speak the loudest. Body language is the use of physical behavior, expressions, and mannerisms to communicate nonverbally, often done instinctively rather than consciously. - 10. Kinesics is the study of human movements, postures and gestures. Locomotion involve walking, running, staggering and jumping etc.

- 15. 5. Adaptors: Help satisfy a personal need and adapt to immediate situations. Adapters are unintentional. Body motions that are used to relieve tension.They include self touching behavior and show nervousness and anxiouness. Some examples are chewing one’s fingernails, tapping foot,biting one’s lips etc.
- 16. Vocalics/Paralanguage: Para language is communication by means other than language. Paralanguage means like language. Words convey their intened meaning through paralanguage.If you say sorry with a smiling face does not convey the right message. How you say matters more than what you say. This How is paralanguage.

- 19. Occulesics: is the study of the role of eye contact in interpersonal communication.It includes Eye movement Eye contact Gaze Good eye contact means trust, confidence interest attention and involvement.
- 20. Eye contact: This is one of the primary ways that human beings gauge interest or disinterest. Wavering eyes tend to communicate unease or even dishonesty. Gaze or Stare or Fixed gaze suggest involvement or wonder or eye disapproval. Rubbing the eyes: Doubt, disbelief
- 21. Haptics: is the study of touching. All behaviour that involves the skin is called haptics. Pat on back, hug, kiss etc. It is used when one comes in physical contact with other person.
- 22. Physical Appearance: Its our clothing, grooming and the Beauty Effect. Physical qualities such as sex, skin color and size. People see you before they hear you.
- 23. Artifacts personal objects we use to convey our identities also known as accessories. Fork and Spoon symbolizes the western countries Chopstick originates from China, Japan or Korea
- 24. Aesthetics: This is the type of communication that takes place through creative expressions; playing instrumental music, dancing, painting and sculpturing.
- 25. Proxemics is the study of measurable distance between people .
- 28. Chronemics are examples of nonverbal communication known as a study of time management and its role in communication is called chronemics. Time is mark of etiquettes. If you are not punctual it will give a messege of careless person.
- 29. People have their own time – language. If a person wakes up at 8 am for him 6 am is early but a person who wakes up at 6am for him 8 am is very late so every individual has his own time zone and is judged accordingly. Punctuality, Willing to wait, interaction, tension on the day of results etc are the examples .
- 30. Olfactics is a sense of smell which use in nonverbal communication. We tend to react to people regarding their smell. The scents and body perfumes act like a person’s signature.
