Communication
Communication is an integral part of human existence. It is
communication that decides the very identity of human
beings. Modern society is turning into an information society
and communication is the exchange of information.
It is the process & transfering information from a sender to a
receiver with the use of a medium in which the
communication information is understood by both sender
and receiver.
Components of Comminucation
• Sender
• Message
• Channel
• Reciever
Characteristics of Communication
• It is a purposeful process which involves sender, messages,
channels and recievers.
• It involves interaction. It is interchange of thoughts, opinions or
information by speech writing and signs.
• It is continous. It occurs everywhere intentionally or
unintentionally.
• It has a content and relational aspects. Nature of relationship
depends upon the punctuation of the dialouge between the
participants.
Types of Communication
People communicate with each other in a number of ways
that depends upon the message and its context in which it
being sent. Types of communication based on the
communication channel are-
Verbal Communication
Non-verbal Communication
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication refers to a form of communication in
which message is transmitted verbally; communication is
done by word of mouth and a piece of writing.
• Objective of every communication is to have people
understanding of the message what we are trying to
convey.
In verbal communication remember the acronym KISS(keep
it short and simple).
Classification of Verbal Communication
• Oral Communication
In oral communication, Spoken words are used. It includes
face-to-face conversations, speech, telephonic
conversation, video, radio, television, voice over internet.
• Written Communication
In written communication, written signs or symbols are used
to communicate. A written message may be printed or hand
written. In written communication message can be
transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Oral
communication
Advantages
• It brings quick feedback.
• In a face-to-face conversation, by reading facial
expression and bodylanguage one can guess whether
he/she should be trustworthy or not.
Disadvantage
• In face-to-face discussion, user is unable to think deeply
about what s/he is delivering.
• Not in the position to alter or modify his thoughts.
Advantages of written communication
• Messages can be edited and revised many time before it
is actually sent.
• Written communication provide record for every message
sent and can be saved for later study.
• A written message enables receiver to fully understand it
and send appropriate feedback.
Disadvantages of written communication
• Unlike oral communication, written communication doesn’t
bring instant feedback.
• It takes more time in composing a written message as
compared to word-of-mouth.
• It is not good enough for those who have poor writing
skills.
Non-verbal Communication
The Non-Verbal Communication is
the process of conveying meaning
without the use of words either
written or spoken. In other words,
any communication made
between two or more persons
through the use of facial
expressions, hand movements,
body language, postures, and
gestures is called as non-verbal
communication.
Three features of Non Verbal Communication
• Appearance
Speaker: clothing, hairstyle,
neatness, use of cosmetics
Surrounding: room size, lighting,
decorations,
• Body Language
facial expressions, gestures,
postures
• Sounds
Voice Tone, Volume, Speech
rate
Categorisation of Communication
Verbal Communication may be categoised on the basis of
recieving the message also. Types of communication based
on the recieving situations are;
• Synchronous Communication
• Asynchronous Communication
Synchronous Communication
• Synchronous communication can be defined as real-
time communication between two people.
e.g. Face-to-face communication
• It is marked by all communicants being involved in
the communications process at the same time, though not
necessarily at the same location.
e.g Telephonic communication
Asynchronous Communication
• It is a type of communication
which is not in steady state and
non-real time communication is
called asynchronous
communication. In this type of
communication, it is not
necessary that the receiver will
receive the information at the
same time.
• Ex. e-mail, fax.
Levels of Commication
Person to itself
Person to person
( Person to group level)
• One to group Communication
• Small Group Communication
• Mass Communication
Mass Communication
Mass communication is the
process of imparting and
exchanging information through
mass media to large segments of
the population. It is usually
understood for relating to various
forms of media, as these
technologies are used for the
dissemination of information, of
which journalism and advertising
are part of.
Mediums of Mass communication
• Radio
• Television
• Social Networking
• Newspapers
• Magazines
• Film
• Internet
Advantages of Mass Communication
• Quick Transmission of
Information
• Numerous Reciever
• Access to Remote area
Classroom Communication
It is a communication between teacher and learner. Teacher
deliver the content to students through communication.
Teaching is a collaborative experience which depends act of
communication. Two types of Communication occurs in the
classroom i.e.
• Verbal Communication
• Non-verbal Communication
Classroom Verbal Communication
• One way Communication
Lecture
Seminar
Individual Presentation
• Two way Communication
Between Teacher and Student
Between Student and Student
Tutorials
• Group Discussion
Classroom Non Verbal Communication
Non verbal communication involves the following
• Postures
• Gestures
• Body Language
• Distance between Teacher and taught
• Physical Environment of the classroom
Barriers of Communication
The major effect of communication barriers is that they lead
to information becoming distorted. The message will not be
received exactly as it was intended. Barriers are many and
can occur anywhere in the communication process. The key
barriers are;
• Semantic Barrier
• Emotional Barrier
• Physical Barrier
• Systemic Barrier
Language Barrier
The language used by the sender may not be understood
by the receiver. Also, the two-people communicating may
speak the same language but the jargon used to pass the
information may breakdown communication if the receiver
doesn’t fully understand it. For example, if an expert uses
industry terminology while communicating to an intern
he/she will not be understood because they are yet to learn
the terminology.
Emotional Barriers
The state of mind of the communicators can hinder the
delivery of information. If the receiver is having issues they
are likely to be less attentive, which could lead to poor
communication. The mental state of the sender and
receiver influences how the message is received, perceived
and sent.
Physical Barriers
• Noise
• Geographical distance: If you are to send a message to a
person in Antarctica this may prove difficult as mobile
communication is unavailable or poor. Face to face
communication is best as both are in the same place.
• Furniture/ Seating Arrangement
• Physical Health
• Vantilation
Systemic Barriers
• In an organization, communication may be barred
because they are some rigidity to communicate amongst
themselves. It is not flexibile, various levels exist between
the reciever and sender.
• For example, a junior employee may not be able to
access the company CEO because no measures have
been put in place to allow for that. Systemic barriers exist
in organizations with inefficient communication channels.
Taboos
Communication may be hinder because some topics are
not open to discussion. Taboo topics may include,
• religion
• sexuality
• sex
• politics
• disabilities
Conclusion
To ensure the impact of barriers are not felt active listening,
reflection on message and seeking clarification must be
practiced. Also, be aware of the barriers to effective
communication and how to avoid them will help.
Thanks a lot!
