The nervous system is divided into the central nervous system, comprising the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system outside of these. The peripheral system further divides into the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. The somatic system controls voluntary movement and reflexes between the central nervous system and skeletal muscles, skin, and senses. The autonomic system automatically regulates internal organs without conscious effort.
