The nervous system consists of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and coordinates body functions. The peripheral nervous system connects the central nervous system to organs and limbs, and has two divisions - the somatic nervous system which interacts with the external environment, and the autonomic nervous system which regulates internal organs. The autonomic nervous system has sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves that work in tandem to stimulate or relax organ function.
