Module No : C 1-1
Module Value : 01
60 Hours (02 Hours per Week)
Rational : This module will provide the basic knowledge and skills to communicate
and receive technical ideas without ambiguity.
Assessment Method : AE
Aim of the module to enable the students to:-
0I. Read and interpret working drawings
02. Make sketches which can be used as a means of technical
communication.
03. Appreciate the effective use of drawings and diagrams.
The student will be able to
 Interpret information from construction drawings
 Prepare working sketches according to the given drawings
 Prepare construction and related drawings according to requirements and standards both manually
and using computer software
Summary
 Introduction to technical drawings, standards, notations and conventions used
 Types of drawings (mechanical & construction drawings, component drawings, site plans, structural
drawings, service drawings, architectural drawings, shop drawings, details & finishes drawings, as -
built drawings etc.)
 Drawing instruments, sizes & types of drawing papers
 Layout of drawings – scales, spacing
 Line types and lettering
 Basic geometrical constructions: point, straight line, angles, polygon etc.
 Tangencies
 Conic sections
 Spiral of Archimedes, Involutes, Cycloid, Helix
 Introduction to projections: perspectives, parallel projections
 Introduction to CAD
 Drawing the following both manually and using CAD software
- Mechanical drawings (component drawings, assembly drawings etc)

- Building and Civil engineering drawings (site plans, sections, elevations, structural drawings,
shop drawings, detail drawings, as-built drawings etc)
- Service drawings (Electrical circuit drawings, Plumbing drawings etc)
 Interpret Architectural drawings
 Interpret information from necessary drawings related to construction process
A INTRODUCTION
01. Knows the need of engineering drawing to technical communication.
01.1 States the need of engineering drawings in terms of
- Communication,
- Organisation
01.2 States the functions of a drawing office and its importance to industrial
organisation.
01.3 States the functions of a draughtsman.
01.4 Selects the drawing equipment available to carry out drawing tasks.
01.5 Demonstrates the proper care use of drawing instruments.
01.6 Uses the title block format and understands the reasons for presentation of the
information contained in the title block.
01.7 Appreciates the techniques of lettering titles (7mm) sub titles (5mm), notes
figurers (3 mm) recommended by SLS 409 standards.

02. Identifies the standard types of line and dimensions used in engineering drawings.
02.1 Identifies and draw standard types of lines

dimensions.

C GEOMETRICAL CONSTRUCTIONS
03. Knows the geometrical constructions used in engineering drawings.
03.1 Constructs basic angles and triangles using engineering instruments.
03.2 Draws and bisects:-

Using instruments without measurement.
03.3 Divides a straight line into any number of equal parts using drawing instruments,
without measurement.
03.4 Constructs regular polygon:-
- Having being given the length and position of one side.-
- Within a circle.
03.5 Identifies the parts of a circle.

- Sector
- Quadrant
- Tangent
3.6 Constructs tangents to circles.
3.7 Selects the standard scales used in engineering drawings.
3.8 Constructs simple and diagonal scales.

3.10 Draws ellipse
- Using auxiliary circles
- Using intersecting lines
3.11 Draws parabola using intersecting lines.
3.12 Constructs circles of appropriate radius to blend in the curves and straight line .
D FORM OF PROJECTION
04. Identifies forms of projections
04.1 Explains with aid of sketches the meaning of orthographic projection in terms of:
- Principal plane of projection

- Self -locking nuts

06. Identifies the standard symbols and convention representations.

F ENGINEERING DRAWINGS
07. Draws forms of projections of given engineering components (including assembles) to
the scale, to present as a working drawing.
07.1 Draws orthographic views of given engineering component including given
conventional representations including hidden detail and sectioned view:-
- 1st angle projection
- 3rd angle projection
07.2 Draws isometric views using isometric scale
07.3 Draws oblique views to include rectilinear and curved objects.
08. Draws simple diagrams using appropriate standard symbols.

NCIT civil Syllabus 2013-2014

  • 1. National Diploma for Industrial Technician Civil Engineering Module : Engineering Drawing Module No : C 1-1 Module Value : 01 60 Hours (02 Hours per Week) Rational : This module will provide the basic knowledge and skills to communicate and receive technical ideas without ambiguity. Assessment Method : AE Aim of the module to enable the students to:- 0I. Read and interpret working drawings 02. Make sketches which can be used as a means of technical communication. 03. Appreciate the effective use of drawings and diagrams. The student will be able to  Interpret information from construction drawings  Prepare working sketches according to the given drawings  Prepare construction and related drawings according to requirements and standards both manually and using computer software Summary  Introduction to technical drawings, standards, notations and conventions used  Types of drawings (mechanical & construction drawings, component drawings, site plans, structural drawings, service drawings, architectural drawings, shop drawings, details & finishes drawings, as - built drawings etc.)  Drawing instruments, sizes & types of drawing papers  Layout of drawings – scales, spacing  Line types and lettering  Basic geometrical constructions: point, straight line, angles, polygon etc.  Tangencies  Conic sections  Spiral of Archimedes, Involutes, Cycloid, Helix  Introduction to projections: perspectives, parallel projections  Introduction to CAD  Drawing the following both manually and using CAD software - Mechanical drawings (component drawings, assembly drawings etc) ENGINEERING DRAWING Unit No: C 1-1 C
  • 2. - Building and Civil engineering drawings (site plans, sections, elevations, structural drawings, shop drawings, detail drawings, as-built drawings etc) - Service drawings (Electrical circuit drawings, Plumbing drawings etc)  Interpret Architectural drawings  Interpret information from necessary drawings related to construction process A INTRODUCTION 01. Knows the need of engineering drawing to technical communication. 01.1 States the need of engineering drawings in terms of - Communication, - Organisation 01.2 States the functions of a drawing office and its importance to industrial organisation. 01.3 States the functions of a draughtsman. 01.4 Selects the drawing equipment available to carry out drawing tasks. 01.5 Demonstrates the proper care use of drawing instruments. 01.6 Uses the title block format and understands the reasons for presentation of the information contained in the title block. 01.7 Appreciates the techniques of lettering titles (7mm) sub titles (5mm), notes figurers (3 mm) recommended by SLS 409 standards. B LINES AND DIMENSIONS 02. Identifies the standard types of line and dimensions used in engineering drawings. 02.1 Identifies and draw standard types of lines - Continuous thick - Continuous thin - Continuous irregular thin - Short dashes thick - Chain thick - Chain thin 02.2 Identifies the difference between functional dimensions and non-functional dimensions. 02.3 Draws dimensions to indicate. - Horizontal, - Vertical, - Circle., - Arcs & Curvature, - Gaps, Hrs Hrs
  • 3. - Angular .dimensions C GEOMETRICAL CONSTRUCTIONS 03. Knows the geometrical constructions used in engineering drawings. 03.1 Constructs basic angles and triangles using engineering instruments. 03.2 Draws and bisects:- - Straight line - Angle Using instruments without measurement. 03.3 Divides a straight line into any number of equal parts using drawing instruments, without measurement. 03.4 Constructs regular polygon:- - Having being given the length and position of one side.- - Within a circle. 03.5 Identifies the parts of a circle. - Diameter - Radius - Circumference - Chord - Segment - Sector - Quadrant - Tangent 3.6 Constructs tangents to circles. 3.7 Selects the standard scales used in engineering drawings. 3.8 Constructs simple and diagonal scales. 3.9 Defines - Ellipse - Parabola 3.10 Draws ellipse - Using auxiliary circles - Using intersecting lines 3.11 Draws parabola using intersecting lines. 3.12 Constructs circles of appropriate radius to blend in the curves and straight line . D FORM OF PROJECTION 04. Identifies forms of projections 04.1 Explains with aid of sketches the meaning of orthographic projection in terms of: - Principal plane of projection Hrs Hrs
  • 4. - Point - Lines - Areas - Simple 3 dimensional objects 04.2. Sketches the construction of:- - 1st angle projection - 3rd angle projection including the use of hidden detail line. 04.3 Produces sketches that distinguish between isometric projection and oblique projection. 04.4 Sketches, from given orthographic drawing - Isometric views without isometric scale - Oblique views to include rectilinear and curved objects. 04.5 Sketches orthographic views using , - Isometric views - Oblique views 04.6 Produces neat and clear free hand sketches in terms of - Density of lines - Good form - Scale - Proportion in accordance with the above methods of projection. 04.7 Selects from standards the appropriate section conventions to variety of pre- prepared drawings. 04.8 Produce the sectional views of:- - Single component - Assemblies (not more than 6 parts) E ENGINEERING DRAWING INTERPRITATIONS 05. Identifies from a set of pre prepared drawings common types of fastening devices 05.1 Identifies common types of temporary fastening devices;- - Screws - Nuts - Pins - Circlips - Studs 05.2 Identifies permanent fastenings:- - Snap head rivets - Pan head rivets - Counter sunk rivets
  • 5. 05.3 Identifies locking devices:- - Lock nuts - Self -locking nuts - Castle nuts - Tab washers - Spring washers 06. Identifies the standard symbols and convention representations. . 06.1 Identifies standard symbols for the welded joints.(Lap & Butt) - Fillet Single vee butt - Spot, - Projection and seam welds. 06.2 Identifies conventional representation of electrical components. - Power supplies (battery, earth, a.c main d.c) - Connections (junctions, cables, twin core, 3 -core, screened) - Lamps - Switches ( single -pole, relay connectors ) - Circuit elements - Electronic devices (semiconductors, diode, transistors, LEDS & saner diode. Draws forms of projections of given engineering components (including assembles) to the scale, to present as a working drawing. 07.1 Draws orthographic views of given engineering component including given conventional representations including hidden detail and sectioned view:- - 1st angle projection - 3rd angle projection 07.2 Draws isometric views using isometric scale 07.3 Draws oblique views to include rectilinear and curved objects. 08.
