There is growing evidence that out-of-school informal science programs, such as after-school science clubs, can promote science learning (NRC, 2009). We have been studying young women’s learning and participa- tion in science as they traverse across various “science spaces,” including after-school science clubs and school science classrooms, and the impact this has on their identity development (or sense of future selves in science). Findings indicate that informal learning opportunities, when they are
both continuous and complementary to school science, play critical roles in shaping how and why girls identify with science, and the ways in which such identity work can transfer from out-of-school settings to in-school settings, in ways that positively impact their participation and learning there. In my talk I focus on these findings, and describe the mechanisms of transfer that support girls in leveraging out of school learning for success in school science.

The FFQ estimates were compared to urinary flavonoid levels, plasma carotenoid levels, and a 4-day weighed food diary (FD) completed by 119 pregnant women. Correlations were found between the FFQ and biomarkers for various food groups. Using the triangular method with two biomarkers, validity coefficients of 0.65 and 0.59 were calculated for the FFQ's ability to estimate citrus fruit/juice and cooked vegetable intake respectively. There is growing evidence that out-of-school informal science programs, such as after-school science clubs, can promote science learning (NRC, 2009). We have been studying young women’s learning and participa- tion in science as they traverse across various “science spaces,” including after-school science clubs and school science classrooms, and the impact this has on their identity development (or sense of future selves in science). Findings indicate that informal learning opportunities, when they are
both continuous and complementary to school science, play critical roles in shaping how and why girls identify with science, and the ways in which such identity work can transfer from out-of-school settings to in-school settings, in ways that positively impact their participation and learning there. In my talk I focus on these findings, and describe the mechanisms of transfer that support girls in leveraging out of school learning for success in school science.

2. Aim: To study the infant and young child feeding practices among the lactating mothers of village Khuda Lahora of
Chandigarh.
3. Objectives:
a. To assess the prevailing breast feeding practices adopted by the lactating mothers of village Khuda Lahora.
b. To identify the barriers which lead to inappropriate breast feeding practices.
c. To examine the complementary feeding given to the infants and young children of the village.
4. Methodology: The study was conducted in the one of the randomly selected village Khuda Lahora of the “city beautiful”-
Chandigarh. The total population of the village is 3,476. There are 2,011 males and 1,456 females. There were 191
mothers who were registered in the sub centre of the village but only 167 participated in the study.
5. Results: The rate of exclusive breast feeding among the lactating mothers is found to be 22.7% and 46% of the mothers
have some prior knowledge of breastfeeding. It was found that 71% of the respondents started complementary feeding at
the age of 4-5 months. It is seen that 29% of the respondents gave diluted milk.
One Health Overview
The One Health Center aims to improve global health through an integrated approach addressing connections between human, animal, food, and environmental factors. Its mission is to assess and respond to health problems at this human-animal-environment interface through multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts. Key areas of research and intervention include improved water management, poultry immunization, disease surveillance, food safety, and combating malnutrition. A signature project will pilot interventions in these areas in Uganda to evaluate the added benefits of One Health approaches.

Breastfeeding patterns were found to differ across primary, secondary, and tertiary health institutions, though not significantly. The study concluded that efforts are needed to motivate mothers to exclusively breastfeed for the recommended 6 months.

This study validated a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) used to measure fruit, vegetable, and tea intake in pregnant women in Norway. Daily consumption of blueberry bioactives for 6 weeks improved insulin sensitivity in obese, insulin-resistant adults compared to a placebo. A double-blind randomized clinical trial assigned 32 participants to consume either a smoothie with 22.5g blueberry bioactives or a placebo smoothie twice daily. Insulin sensitivity was measured using a clamp technique and increased more in the blueberry group compared to the placebo group without changes in body weight, energy intake, or inflammation markers. Blueberry bioactives may improve insulin action and reduce risk of diabetes.

NCFS - Background
- 1. Background This report describes the methods used and the main findings for the National Children’s Food Survey. The survey investigated habitual food and drink consumption, health and lifestyle characteristics and assessed body weight status in 594 children, aged 5-12 years, from the Republic of Ireland. The electronic database which has been compiled from the survey is one of the most comprehensive in Europe. It represents a valuable resource which will be used by agencies concerned with public health policy and planning and by the food industry. The survey was carried out by the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA – a formal alliance of the academic nutrition centres at University College Cork (UCC), Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) and the University of Ulster (UU), Coleraine, which is committed to joint initiatives in research and teaching). The survey was carried out by the following teams at TCD and UCC, and consultation was also sought from researchers from the IUNA centre at UU TCD: Professor Michael J.
