BIOSENSORS ARE EVERYWHERE
NANO BIOSENSORS RANGE
FATHER OF NANO BIOSENSORS
Professor Leland C
Clark Jnr( 1918–
2005)
Current Definition of Nano Biosensors
A sensor that integrates a biological
element with a physiochemical transducer
to produce an electronic signal proportional to
a single analyte which is then conveyed to a
detector
BIOSENSOR IS MADE UP OF
3COMPONENT
 a recognition element/ Analyte (What do
you want to detect)
Molecule - Protein, toxin, peptide, vitamin,
sugar, metal ion
 a signal transducer.(to convert biological
response to an electric signal)
 a signal processor that relays and displays
the results(How do you know there was a
detection)

TYPES OF BIOSENSORS
Electrochemical biosensors
Potentiometric
Amperometric
Optical biosensors
Mass-Based biosensors
Piezo-Electric
Acoustic
Colorimetric biosensors
ELECTROCHEMICAL
BIOSENSORS
Many chemical reaction produce or consume
ions or electrons causing some change in the
electric properties of the solution that can be
sensed out and used as a measuring
parameter.
Uses: Detection of:
Hybridized DNA
DNA-Binding drugs
Glucose detection.
OPTICAL BIOSENSORS
Colorimetric for color
◦ Measure change in light adsorption
Photometric for light intensity
◦ Photon output for a luminescent or
fluorescent process can be detected
with photomultiplier tubes or
photodiode systems.
MASS-BASED BIOSENSORS
Piezoelectric sensors are based on
changes in the mass of quartz crystals
when potential energy is applied to
them. This change in mass generates
a frequency, which can be converted
into a signal.
COLORIMETRIC BIOSENSORS
Calorimetric biosensors measure
exothermic reactions.
Many enzymatic reactions generate
heat, and changes in heat can be
used to measure analyte
concentration.
Monitored by measuring enthalpy
changes
PRINCIPLES OF DETECTION
 PIEZO- ELECTRIC Measures change in Mass
ELECTROCHEMICAL Measures change in Electric
distribution
◦
OPTICAL Measures change in Light intensity
COLORIMETRIC Measures change in Heat

NANO NOSE SMELLS CANCER
 Cancer is defined as abnormal and
uncontrolled cell growth due to both
environmental and hereditary defects.
 By measuring levels of certain proteins
secreted by tumor cells, in urine.
 whether a tumor is present,
 whether it benign or cancerous,
 whether treatment has been effective in
reducing or eliminating cancerous cells.
DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER BY:
MRI(magnetic resonance imaging)
Drawback: can’t detect entities smaller
than few cm.
 NANOMATRIALS( 1to100nm) in
diameter)
