After researching three music genres for a new magazine, the author has chosen to focus on indie music. Indie was selected because the author is very familiar with the genre as a listener and therefore has good knowledge to create articles. Additionally, the target audience of 16-25 year olds matches the author's own demographic, allowing them to relate to the audience's interests. The individuality theme of indie music also provides an easy basis for generating new content for the magazine.
2. After researching 3 different possible genres for my
music magazine (Grime, Pop, Indie), I have came to a
conclusion on what genre will be my final choice or many
reasons.
3.
4. Grime was my first choice of genre as it is a music genre
which I enjoy listening to so I have a lot of knowledge on
which will help me when creating articles for my
magazine.
It is a very broad genre as a lot of grime is also about
fashion and social hierarchy. This helps as it means I will
be able to write a lot about Grime in the magazine
meaning more people will enjoy reading to it.
In addition, Grime is a very popular genre at this time so
it will attract a large audience.
5. The target audience for Grime is mainly male 16-20 year
olds so I will have to include things in my magazine
which this target audience are interested in.
This target audience is useful because I am in this band
of people so I know what type of things that they enjoy.
6. My second choice of genre is Pop Music. This is also a
genre which I enjoy listening to so I am familiar with the
music and everything about it.
Also the majority of the chart music at this time is Pop
which shows it is popular (Pop – comes from the word
popular showing it is one of the most well-known genres
around) and will attract a large audience. This also
means there is a lot to discuss.
Pop music is very popular because it is so broad and
there can be a song for any mood depending on the
pace of the song and the melody
7. Research taken from Wikipedia:
‘The term popular music belongs to a number of musical genres "having
wide appeal" and typically distributed to large audiences through the music
industry. These forms and styles can be enjoyed and performed by people
with little or no musical training. It stands in contrast to both art music and
traditional or "folk" music. Art music was historically disseminated through
the performances of written music, although since the beginning of the
recording industry, it is also disseminated through recordings. Traditional
music forms such as early blues songs or hymns were passed along orally,
or to smaller, local audiences’.
This tells us that Pop music has a very wide audience so
is very hard to work out a target audience but means it
appeals to more people.
8. I found it very hard to decide a specific target audience
as so many people listen to Pop because it started as a
mixture of different genres so this means it attracts a
very large audience as it is like a hybrid.
This means I could include a lot of different content in
magazine which would make it more interesting and
therefore more people would buy it.
9. My final choice of genre for my magazine is Indie. This is
a genre which I listen to a lot so I have a lot of
knowledge about it which would be useful when thinking
about the content for the magazine.
Indie music has a huge theme about being ‘individual’
and different which would be easy to create content for
as you can make it up yourself.
10. After researching the target audience for the indie target
audience I found that the age range is 16-25 year olds
which is a band which I fit in so I will be good at coming
up with the content.
Also slightly more men listen to indie than women which
again will help with coming up with content for the
magazine.
