1. Task 5- Deciding Which Genre and Style
Pop
My level of Knowledge and Expertise:
The genre Pop comes from the word popular and popular music originated in the
1950’s.
The genre Pop is very mainstream which is understandable considering the word Pop
originated from the word popular.
There are loads of different types of sub-genres to Pop such as Dance-pop,
electropop, teen pop and loads more.
There is a mixture of male artists and female artists in the Pop industry and one
doesn’t dominate the other.
Is it different/original/creative?
According to reports in the 1950’s Pop music started off as an acoustic piece of
music which is very different to what it is today.
Today people the majority of people would see Pop music as unoriginal.
A lot of Pop music is seen as the same and it would be quite difficult to find
something different about Pop in the past 20 years.
The Genuine Audience:
Pop music generally targets both male and female depending on what type of pop it
is.
If it is teen pop you would most likely see young teenage girls listening to it.
If it is more Hip Hop then there is a possibility that males may be more interested in
listening to it.
Overall I’d say there were more sub-genres to Pop in which females would listen to
over males.
Strengths of Choosing this Genre:
It is well-known and would be recognised by the younger audience in particular
straight away.
There would be lots of ideas and artists I could write about as there are loads of
different sub-genres and artists within Pop.
2. Weaknesses of Choosing this Genre:
There may not be a slot in the market for a Pop magazine as it is so mainstream and
there are many other Pop magazines in Britain.
People may not be interested in a Pop magazine as there are other more trusted Pop
magazines in the industry and it isn’t something different to the general magazine
market.
Specific Pop Artists:
Justin Bieber
Taylor Swift
Beyoncé
One Direction
Katy Perry
