Targeting Passionate Indie Music Fans Ages 16-30
1. Q4.) Who would be the audience for your media
product?
The target audience for my Music
magazine is aimed at 75% males ranging
from the ages of 16-30s, who have a range of qualities that complement their
work ethic and lifestyle. Each individual would be someone who has a
passion and love for music that music is part of their life. Each individual
would be someone who is creative and have high self-esteem or are
encouraged to have high aspiration. The reader is someone who is
opinionated and have strong beliefs, but are open-minded to listening and
incorporating other ideas as well, they are good listeners who always state
what is on their minds and is never afraid to speak out when they disagree
with something. The magazine focuses mainly on youth as the magazine is
2. trying to influence youths by bringing out their confidence as they are part of
a generation that could make a huge change into several career paths and
the magazine helps to ensure that. As my magazine incorporates more of
modern music, aiming for a young, but mature target age is good for the
buildup of my magazine.
I have decided to go for these ages for my target audience as whilst I was
doing my research on Indie magazines the majority of the readerships were
males ranging from the age group of 18-29, so I thought that by incorporating
my knowledge on the standard age of the Indie music magazine readers it
would be more realistic in reflecting real life readers of my magazine. I did
follow research by looking at NME and Q media packs of the target
audience and that had then helped in contributing to the creation of my
own research on my target audience.
I have also done my own research before coming into conclusions with this
age group and that was a music questionnaire that I had designed- Music
Magazine Questionnaire) into finding out the preferences and features for a
target audience and out of 20 questionnaire of those who responded 12
were males ranging from ages 16-17. So after that, I had decided to stick to a
male target audience and have the lowest age of a readership and 16 and
looking at the mean age I expanded it to 30 years old. I did a focus group
research as well and looking at both existing readership ages they ranged
from 16-17 year olds, another further decision that was made was the genre
of my magazine as before I knew I had the intentions to create either a pop
or a rock magazine, but after researching, helping in aiding me into my
decision for the genre of my magazine that is indie as one of the follow
questions asked about favourite artists/bands and most of the answers were
indie artists such as, Arctic Monkeys, Panic at the Disco, Muse, Fallout Boy and
The 1975 so I thought why not focus on an indie genre as it is the most
popular as selected by the target audience. But it also enhanced my
knowledge and understanding on what is required to attract people in my
selected target audience.
By incorporating the theory by Maslow and Blumler and Katz. Using Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs loving and belonging would be used to help attract the
target audience as the target audience all share the same interests and are
highly passionate about music they would then be able to feel loved and
3. belonged as they feel included in a larger majority of those who share the
same interests. As well as the use of esteem for the target audience as they
are so passionate about music it is only right to make our readers feel evening
more confident by giving them what they desire news on music. As for
Blumler and Katz the use of social interaction, identification and information.
As those who enjoy the same genre of music can be found at the same types
of gigs and festivals and with music articles and features available it allows
social interaction between the target audience along with having
information on music about what’s the latest music to keep the readers
updated and informed. And lastly the readers will be able to identify with the
music the magazine features.
