8. I gathered information from my questionnaire as well as research so
that I was able to create a perfect representation of the typical audience
for my magazine. The audience for my media product would be
teenagers and adults aged between 16-35. This is an ideal age range as
it incorporates a mix of different lifestyles that fit within the standard
range of ages associated with the Indie music scene- For example-
Teenagers newly discovering the music scene, University students
wishing to keep up with the details and older, more involved modern
Indie music fans are all accounted for. As the audience span ranges from
young adults and up, my piece is sophisticated however does not have a
fully formal tone.
9. The readers should be both male and female. I have targeted it
at both genders so that I could have a wider audience. The
results concluded that the majority of the participants were
female however I would aim to attract genders equally for a
wider target market. As the Indie genre in Britain has working
class routes, I aimed for the audience to be predominantly
working class using relatable language, artists from working
class backgrounds and affordable music merchandise and gig
opportunities however the magazine could appeal to all classes
due to the detailed contents. The readers of my magazine live
in towns/cities and have very urban surroundings, explaining
why the listen to indie music- for an escape. As well as this,
they spend lots of time hanging around with people with
similar interests discussing music etc meaning that the
magazine is perfect for them as they will have more new music
to talk about.
To appeal to both male and
female readers I used a duo of
a male and female for my main
article.
10. The magazine focuses heavily on Gigs and Concerts
matching the lifestyle of the audience, who attend gigs
often and have gig-going communities. From the answers
in my questionnaire I concluded that overall my audience
go to gigs once a month on average, meaning that a
monthly supplement is efficient in order to learn about
gigs and bands etc. The audience dress in ‘retro’ clothing,
casual comfortable outfits that mimic 70s/80s/90s style
typically and reflect the relaxed ‘individual’ style of the
genre- Through extensive research I learnt that the roots
of indie music influence the clothing that is synonymous to
the genre (or movement) therefore my audience would
dress accordingly.
The indie style nowadays
is influenced from the
roots of the music and
the ‘original’ indie scene
however is has adapted
and develop with many
influences merging.
11. As 60% of the audience preferred 26-40 pages I could infer that they have
some free time to read about the latest however have a quite busy lifestyle
going to gigs and hanging out with friends. When asked what free Item that
they would like to receive with the magazine, 19 out of 50 requested a cd- my
audience, as well as going to gigs regularly, like to collect music and have a
large collection of both old and new indie music. As the preferred price that
the magazine should be retailed at was £3, I can presume that the majority of
the audience are on a small budget- This could be for many reasons- They
may depend on parents and get a monthly allowance, have a part time job or
be on a university student budget as well as other possibilities.
12. My audience are interested in all areas of indie music whether
this is indie music in the charts or unsigned artists looking to
make a break in the scene- These younger generations (16-35)
are eager to pursue the scene so that it continues to grow and
adapt. My audience have a strong social network online and
through gigs and events and learn about new artists mainly
through Online Social networking sites(33%) such as Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter, websites(10%) such as NME Online and
Spotify and word of mouth(26%)- They have many friends both
online and in life and converse and share new information about
the scene constantly. Social network is generally synonymous
with young people and it is extremely important to the audience
as it allows them to express themselves and connect with each
other as they may not have friends close by who are interested in
indie music. It widens their circles drastically.
13. I have included audience profiles of people who fit within the target audience for my magazine. I
gave them 10 general questions so that I would be able to make conclusions about the audience
and their lifestyle as it suited my target audience. Half are unemployed and half are employed
however all have some spendable income so will be able to afford the magazine. As you can see,
each is dressed in an individual style, not what you’d expect to find on the high-street and much is
influenced by 80s/90s fashion- For example- A baggy denim jacket and flannel dress are symbolic
of this era. The long wavy hair is also symbolic. All are in full time education, either College or
apprenticeship, which means they don’t have too much free time so a monthly publication is
perfect. They all go to gigs on quite a regular basis and buy Indie music magazine as this is an
interest.
