1. Formal Proposal:
The title of the magazine that I wish to produce is called ‘Voice’ the reason why I chose this title was
because when i was conducting research into why people listen to my chosen genre which is hip hop
I learnt that they listen to this genre as they believe it refers to their daily life and problems and that
it puts their emotions into words, so by having a the title ‘voice’ it leads the target audience to
believe that they can relate to this magazine above all others which uses emotional manipulation to
do so.
I chose the hip hop because it is personally one of my favourite genres of music and I know a lot of
hip hop artists and the theme that genre has. Moreover, from a media perceptive I believe I will
have more to contribute as I am aware of the mise-en-scene and target audience of the magazine
which will therefore enable me to produce a higher standard magazine. Another reason I chose this
genre was because I knew that this was one of the most popular and well known genres and that
people are more likely to read hip hop magazines than for example classic magazines which will give
me a wider audience to appeal and therefore more people will read my magazine.
My target audience for this genre would be anyone who enjoys this type of music but more specially
it would be male and females within the 16-25 age limit however, there are other audiences that like
hip hop such as young teenagers from 13-15 and also more mature adults ranging from 30-35. From
this it is clear although there maybe a specific target audience that the hip hop genre is aimed at it
also how many other audiences that are interested in hip hop which makes it evident that it has a
wide and varied amount of audiences appealed to this genre.
My initial ideas about my front cover is to have a large masthead giving the name of the publication
being placed at the top of the page, plus I intent to have a main image of male in the centre of the
page and he will have a theme that refers to the genre of the music e.g. wearing jewellery and
baseball hats. Furthermore I also plan to have various cover lines with a variety of fonts and sizes
surrounding the image in order to display what is inside the magazine and therefore lure the target
audience towards the magazine.
My initial ideas about my contents page is to have the top right hand section of the page display a
table and within it, it shall give the reader the name of the topic and the page number in order for
them to find it. I will always have a use of different images associated to hip hop and a colour
scheme in order to lure the target audience towards the magazine.
My initial ideas about my double page spread is to have the top section of the page discuss the
latest news regarding the hip hop music charts, new, upcoming and current artists. Then the bottom
section of the page will focus on a specific artists or band and discuss things revolving their daily life
and future intentions. The double page spread will have a similar colour scheme as the front cover
and contents page in order to make it stand out plus, it will have a variety of different fronts, sizes
and colours in order to appeal and lure the target audience towards the magazine.
Initial ideas about photographs is to have a male aged 18-25 because this is age at which hip hop
artists are most successful and recognised which will appeal the target audience those the magazine.
Furthermore, they will have the mise-en-scene that relates to hip hop e.g. wearing jewellery and
baseball caps.
