2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. RADIOHEAD -
DAYDREAMING
This video uses the same video
effect throughout the whole
track, this is a very nice effect as
you know what is going to
happen but also don’t know
what environment he will be in
next. I want to use this same
concept with the same visual
effect throughout the song with
the environment changing
around me. This will be a bit
faster as the song is more fast
paced. This will be partnered
with fast transitions. The music
video use a various types of
camera shots, this is something
I will adapt into my music video.
The music video has a slow
7. QUADECA – UH HUH
- With this music video there is always
camera movement and constant shot
movement I like this feature of the
music video as it always keeps the
viewer interested as nothing is the
same and there is always something to
look at. I want to adapt this idea in my
own way with quick transitions
between each shot, this will keep the
viewer interested with every shot and
between shots.
- The artist is constantly moving in the
music video and I don’t want to use
the movement from the artist as he
will be stood in the same place in
every shot but in a different
8. AK – LIKE I GOT IT
With this music video the transitions through
shots are very fast and work well together. In
this shot there was a transition going down
into a new shot of the artist in the street. I
want to use this type of transitions between
shots, when the artist in my music video
throws the box with the lyrics on them in the
air or to the side the camera will move with
the box and will produce a smooth transition
to the next shot to reveal a new environment.
9. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
- The techniques I will use will be based on the song of
daydreaming by Radiohead. This is the effect of the artist
moving through different locations by moving through
the scene and out of the scene into a another scene and
location
- My artist will acknowledge what has happened and will
be confused about what has happened but will move
onto another location.
- When the artist has gone through one location the shot
will quickly jump to another location with the artist
coming out from another corner or doorway in a new
location
10. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
My number / The Foals
This song is very upbeat and could fit a good music
video, the song is very adaptable and will be easy to
make a music video
The genre of my song is alternative. The genre is quite
popular and has elements of rock and pop so relates to
other audiences, the music video will be easy to make as
most alternative music videos have very unique music
videos. They don’t follow a certain trend and they are
very adaptable
11. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
This song is about a relationship between two people. The
song has an upbeat and fast paced style and will transfer
into the pace of my music video.
The song contains lots of repeated lines and verses and I
can use these in my music video by using familiar
surroundings with each verse that is similar
The main idea will be the artist will be placed in the middle
of the shot and will have a cardboard box in their hand with
the lyrics placed upon it, every line the box will be turned to
reveal the next line. Once the verse has finished the artist
will toss the box in a direction and with a quick transition
the artist will be in a new location and will receive the box
from the direction they threw it in the previous shot. The
artist will remain in the same place within the shot and the
surroundings will change between each verse.
12. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My idea will include the artist in the middle of the shot
with a cardboard box with the lyrics on each side and
they will spin the lyrics as they are said by the artist at
the end of the verse the artist will throw the box into the
air or to the left or right and the video will transition to
the artist in the same position in a different location and
will catch the box from the direction of where is was
throw from the previous setting. The artist in different
situations wearing different clothes with a different
environment will keep the music video fresh
14. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
- For my music video I will need to buy 10 cardboard
boxes for the lyrics to be placed on. This will cost not
much and will be easy to get. the cardboard boxes will
be covered in white paper and will have the lyrics on
them written with a marker.
- locations will be in general places like forests, town,
houses, streets, parks. Just general day to day places.
This gives the music video a more natural feeling
throughout the whole song
15. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
First location will be in the city center of york, this will be
a good setting as it includes members of the public
which gives the music video a more natural feel
Second location will be in glen park which is near where I
live, this is a good open spaced environment
16. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
The equipment I will need will be a camera and a tripod
to film the simple shots I need for my music video. The
music video will be very simple with the shots and I will
not need any extra equipment.
17. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
The way I will edit my video will be with premiere. I have
used this program often and I am very familiar with the
features and how to structure my video.
The music video will include many transitions so editing
will be my main focus for this music video, the
transitions will give the music video a deeper structure
18. PERSONNEL
CREW: I will only need myself in my crew as the shots are
simple and will only require one person
CAST: The cast will include one person who will be
walking through the shots, I will not need to transport
them anywhere as my filming will be done in college
within college hours.
19. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
- The main prop will be the cardboard box with the lyrics
written upon it, this will be the main focus of the music
video between the shots, the costume of the artist will be
the same throughout. These are the main two themes
through the music video.
The costume of the artist will just be casual jeans and
jumper as this gives the music video a natural feeling
and will link with music for the video
21. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
22. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
23. PRE-VISUALISATION
-Throughout the video the artist will be in the middle of the shot
with the cardboard box, which will have the lyrics written upon it.
Every time the verse has ended on the box the artist will toss the
box in the air or to the left/right and will be caught by the artist
in a different location with a smooth transition.
-The lighting of the shot will vary and so will the weather. The
lighting will create pathetic fallacy with bright lighting with a
happy part of the song and dark lighting with a slow/sad part of
the song. This will create a dramatic effect and also give a deeper
feel to the emotions of the artist.
-The transitions will be smooth and will keep the song/music
video running in a smooth way. I will use the lighting and setting
to create a smooth and strong transition. For example going
from an overcast to a forest with trees overhead.
-With the slow part of the song towards of the song I will use the
forest setting to create a dramatic feel to the verse, I could also
use a rain in the slow verse which will make the cardboard box
break to reflect on the artists feelings in the verse that is being
performed
-This will quickly transition into a light and bright setting when
the song picks up again after that verse, each setting will reflect
24. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
25. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
-The song I have chosen does not have many lyrics within
the song and this is a good thing to influence the music
video as there is not a main focus of the song meaning I
can base my music video on anything I want
-The song is mainly sound which will help influence my
music video too as I can fit the pace of my video to the
song
26. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
27. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
29. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
30. LOCATIONS
-First location will be the corridors of the college. This
will be used mainly through my music video.
-Second location will be the college stairs. This again will
be used a lot around my music video to create more
structure to it
-Third location will be outside, this will help create a
contrast between the shots going from inside to outside
31. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
33. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
35. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
36. SCHEDULE
- My schedule did not go to plan as I did not have enough
time to film what my original plan was, I had to revert to
filming around college and putting it together in premier
in a short amount of time
37. - My time management was not the best with this project
and I had to revert to a new idea that would be effective and
would not need too much time to edit or film.
- This idea was close to the Daydreaming video with the
artist walking through different locations. I would adapt it
so the artist wont be walking through just doors but would
walk through stairs and appear behind a wall to add
originality to it. The video would not require a lot of filming
or editing work and would also be effective.
- I used the same song, Daydreaming, this is a calm and
peaceful song that would reflect the mood of the video. It is
very adaptable too as it has no real lyrics or subject.
- The artist would finally reach the destination that they
were trying to reach which will be a window looking out to
the outside. After this has happened the video will be put
into reverse making the artist walk back through the same
environments in the same order back to the start. This will
show the journey of the artist through the song.
