4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos
employing styles, techniques and conventions
that we have looked at in previous sessions.
Explore how you could interpret the song
differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is
relevant, images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
to generate these
5. SONG CHOICE – FRAIL STATE
OF MIND BY THE 1975
Idea 1
When I first listened to this
song, I thought about stock
videos, news reports and lots
of distorted shots. I feel lots of
bright colours would be used.
Since the song is about poor
mental health, I would want
the video to be a visual
representation of what it feels
like. I don’t think any faces
would be shown and if they
were, it would be distorted.
lots of spilt screens to
demonstrate more distortion.
Heat detecting camera could
be used like in FEVER by
ENHPYEN.
A video I take inspiration from
is Give Yourself A Try and The
Birthday Party by The 1975.
They both have the colour
scheme that I associate Frail
State of Mind with.
6. IDEA 2
Plain white background
with different colourful
objects in rotation during
the video. Someone
different coming in to sing
different parts of the song.
I would want the video to
look unplanned. Lots of
short videos. Clear images.
The lyrics sometimes
appearing in big text
across the screen. An
album cover that is a visual
representation is
dontsmileatme by Billie
Eillish.
7. IDEA 3
One long shot of people
singing the song but it
looks like it was filmed on
an old camcorder. It would
look unplanned. No
specific camera shots due
to the amount of
movement within the
video. Maybe the use of
skateboards. Maybe using
a wired telephone while on
the skateboard. I would
want the video to feel very
free and easy-going which
as it would juxtapose to
the meaning of the song.
8. REMEMBER WHEN -
WALLOWS
The use of faces becoming more distorted throughout
the video links backs to the song and the song title.
Use of transitions with the bushes.
The background is plain so you can focus more on the
distortion
The band playing their instruments which is a theme
within their videos.
In terms of camera shots, there is lots of movements and
zooms in on the instrument's which I could use in my
video if I use the any objects, not even instruments.
9. REMEMBER WHEN -
WALLOWS
The style of the video is a performance which is a genre
convention. You can see this in videos such as Pretty Boy
by The Neighbourhood and Make Me Your Queen by
Declan McKenna.
Wallows have used lots of symbolism in this video and in
ithers also. The use of a maze can represent trying to find
or recall a certain memory or person. Green also
represents healing which coinherences with the lyrics.
This has given me inspiration to use colours to symbolise
feelings and intentions in my video.
10. MY KIND OF WOMAN – MAC
DEMARCO
The establishing shot of Mac’s mouth applying lipstick
while singing is something I have been heavily inspired
by. I think this is because the colours match my ideas for
the video also I love abnormality this shot has.
Throughout the whole video, there's is an aspect of Mac
controlling the camera which I really like the idea of. An
example of this is when the camera is attached to him
while he is walking. I feel if were to use this idea in my
video, it would contradict the meaning of the song
almost subliminally which I like.
11. MY KIND OF WOMAN – MAC
DEMARCO
The whole video is supposed to look like it is one shot so
there is no shits that ae cut to the beat. If I were to do
this in my video, it could symbolise the meaning of the
song again.
In terms of colour schemes, there is none which could
symbolise distortion. This could be nice in my video as it
can be seen as a visual representation of poor mental
health.
12. GOLD- BROCKHAMPTON
This is the video I take most inspiration
from. The colours are bright and the video
itself is easy-going and fun which is a
possible idea for my video. In the video,
they use strobe lights which I hadn’t
thought of but I will most likely use. The
video looks like it was filmed on a
camcorder which was an idea I really want
to use.
13. CHEESE – STRAY KIDS
This video fits in with my idea of my music video being
fun and playful. There is one particular scene of the
members gathered around the camera which I really
liked.
There is a lot of shots where the camera is on the floor
while the members sing at the camera which correlates
to the lyrics.
They use a technique of placing images within the video
which I think looks really nice.
14. LOVE IT IF WE MADE IT – THE
1975
This is where I got the idea of using
news reports from. The song is very
politically derived and I think the video
compliments that, which is something I
take inspiration from. In in the song,
there are lots of heavy drum kicks;
when these come there is a video of an
explosion. I find this gives more depth
to the video as well as the meaning
behind the song.
Throughout the video, the lyrics are
placed across the screen, almost as a
reminder what the song is about or a
pointer to why a certain video has been
shown.
15. LOVE IT IF WE MADE IT- THE
1975
The colouring of this video is very bright. This continues
for the duration of the video, even when distressing
videos are being shown. This almost takes away the
harshness of the scene. It also gives a childlike approach
to such serious topics such as war.
Further on into the video, people of different
background, ethnicity and race are shown. It almost
grounds the audience and reminds them that people like
them face these topics (eg racism) almost giving the
topic a face; another thing I take inspiration from
16. POSSIBLE SONG CHOICES
Garden Song- Phoebe Bridgers
ICU- Phoebe Bridgers
Francis Forever- Mitski
If I Believe You – The 1975
Drunk- Dazed – ENHYPEN
If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)- The 1975
GOLD- BROCKHAMPTON
Butter- BTS
Me and My Husband - Mitski
18. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
The use of camcorder colouring
Lyrics on the screen
The use of stock videos and news reports
Singing to the camera
19. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
- Brightly coloured
-Using a camcorder and an old TV
- News reports of historical events
- Lyrics on the screen at certain points
- Short bursts of clips
-Closeups
-Distorted
-Fisheye lens
-Light projector
20. SUMMARY
I think I will benefit from gaining more experience with
using the camera. Also, planning and using my time
more efficiently will help for future projects.
I think my idea fits into the time scale we have to film
since my shots I have in mind aren’t too complex.
Using the studio could help me with future projects .
21. SUMMARY- RESTRICTIONS
A restriction to my ideas is budget. There are certain
ideas I may not be able to achieve due to budget such as
using an TV and a camcorder.
Another restriction maybe people willing to be in the
video or help film.
One restriction maybe be the equipment available on the
day of filming.
22. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Title: Frail State Of Mind
Artist: The 1975
Biography: The 1975 formed in 2002 in Cheshire. The band
consists of 4 members, Matty Healy, Adam Hann , George
Daniel and Ross McDonald. Their most popular song is
Chocolate, which reached number 1 in the UK charts in 2013.
Links to other Artists: Some artists similar to The 1975 are
Wallows, No Rome and beabadoobee. No Rome and
beabadoobee have both opened for The 1975 at their concerts.
Genre Information- Indie-Rock
Indie-Rock originated in the UK and the US in the 1970’s. The
song that started this genre was Buzzcocks’ Spiral Scratch EP.
Indie-Rock started to gain popularity in the ‘80’s when Rough
Trade (A popular record company) signed The Smiths.
23. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
The song ‘Frail State of Mind’ talks abouts social anxiety.
Throughout the song, You hear Matty apologize for
feeling the way he does, which is very common with
people with mental illnesses. The word ‘Frail’ is used
commonly against people with mental illnesses as
avoidance, to some, is equal to being frail and weak.
Duration: 3:54
Tempo: Up-tempo
Style: electronic-ballad
24. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
I want to use lots of short clips of people to demonstrate
visually how someone with anxiety disorder feels. I want
to film some shots on a camcorder so the video fits in
with the genre conventions. I feel the use of news
broadcasts can also demonstrate anxiety and maybe give
the audience some anxiety to help understand better. I
also only want to use bright colours in short bursts to
demonstrate a panic attack.

PRE-
PRODUCT
ION
ASSESSM
ENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
27. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUC
TION OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to
make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music
track chosen and your interpretation
of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended
technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think
[you could use material from your
pitch]
28. LOCATIONS
I will use the college studio to create a dark room. I will
also use my bedroom as I have a light projector in there.
Limitation wise, there is a possibility of not being able to
book the studio. However, this isn’t very likely as I will
book the studio in advance.
29. EQUIPMENT
I will need to borrow a camcorder from my parents and a
toy telephone from my little brother. I will also need to
borrow a camera from college. I will speak to my tutor to
organize this along side booking the studio.
30. FACILITIES
I will be editing my video on Aftereffect as that is a
software I am familiar with.
31. PERSONNEL
CREW: for crew, it may need another person to control
the camera for some shots. For this, I will ask one of my
friends as I trust them, and they have free periods when I
would need them.
32. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Costume: a baggy jumper with a long skirt and silver
jewelry. I don’t want the outfit to be too distracting.
Makeup: I will have heavy eye makeup with tear stains
with dark lipstick.
Props: A camcorder which I will bring in myself.
A children’s telephone
maybe an old TV
toy car
34. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when
filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
35. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONC
EPT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
36. I was heavily inspired by The 1975’s convention of using
a camcorder to film their music videos on. I noticed while
trying to find inspiration that the majority of the indie
genre use some form of vintage looking footage within
their video.
Artist’s Music Videos I was Inspired by:
Tame Impalas' Is It True?
The 1975’s If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)
BROCKHAMPTON’s GOLD
Declan McKenna’s Why Do You Feel So Down?
DPR IAN’s Nerves
MARINIA’s Purge The Poison
37.
38.
39. STRUCTU
RAL
BREAKDO
WN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g.
intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad
visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section
when you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections
of the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on
specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section
as you go, to break up the process.
42. INTRO
LYRICS:
(frail state of mind)
(frail state of mind)
The lyrics will be displayed across the screen
once in red and lower caps. Nothing will be
in focus. Lots of distorted and short shots of
me walking around with different props.
These will be mixed with TV news reports
and short stock videos.
frail state of mind
frail state of mind
This is what I
would want the
font and colour
to possibly look
I will film this on the camcorder
43. VERSE ONE
Lyrics:
Go outside? Seems unlikely
I'm sorry that I missed your call
I watched it ring, they ring (Ring)
Don't waste their time
I've always got a frail state of mind
For the lyrics ‘I watched it ring (ring)’ I
will use the toy phone and add text
saying ‘ring!’ to give it a childish effect.
I will have a zoom in from above
me while I sing the lyrics which
will be the main video being
shown throughout the verse.
There will be other short shots
of me walking around with the
camcorder along with other
props.
44. CHORUS 1
Lyrics:
Oh, boy, don't cry
I'm sorry, but I
I always get this way sometimes
Oh, I'll just leave
I'll save you time
I'm sorry 'bout my frail state of mind
I will use my projector to project stars onto
my face. When editing, I will slowly zoom
into my face
The lyrics ‘Oh, I’ll leave’ will be on the
screen in time with them being sung.
oh, i’ll leave.
oh, i’ll leave.
45. VERSE 2
Lyrics:
Stay at mine, you might just like it
Might stop you being miserable
'Nah, I'm alright...nah trust I'm fine'
Just dealing with a (Frail state of mind)
I will film someone writing ‘nah, im
fine’ on a piece of paper then
holding it up with a smile . This
contradicts the meaning of the song.
A long shot of someone looking up to the camera
46. CHORUS 2
Lyrics:
Oh, don't be shy
I'm sorry, but I
I always get this way sometimes
You lot just leave
I'll stay behind
I'm sorry 'bout my (Frail state of mind)
A shot of someone hiding
behind hands but with their
eyes still showing while
‘don’t be shy’ is being sung
47. BRIDGE
Lots of short shots that would include:
Eyes looking around (closeups)
Walking around which will be a mix of slow and fast
Fingers tapping on a table
Blinking (closeups)
Clock that is shown on the camcorder
48. VERSE 3
Lyrics:
Oh, what's the vibe?
I wouldn't know, I'm normally in bed at this time
You guys, go do your thing
And I'll just leave at nine
Don't wanna bore you with my frail state of mind
I will film a mouth on a
camcorder to
demonstrate someone
else.
49. STORYBOAR
DING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to
life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you
video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very
complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you
to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph
your storyboard and scan or copy to insert
it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on
Blackboard!
52. RISK
ASSESSM
ENT
Risk Assess each separate filming
location using the table in the
camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring
point
Completing a generic filming
assessment would be a start, then
you can add specialist/site specific
risks as you progress your
production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an
ongoing document, you should
evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put
control measures in place
You should add the table to each
call sheet for each location
53. RISK ASSESSMENT
There is a risk of potentially knocking the camera while
on the tripod. I will prevent this by being cautious of
where I'm standing. I will also make sure the tripod is set
up correctly so there is very little chance of the camera
will fall.
Another risk could be when I flip backwards while on a
chair, there is a chance I could fall backwards. I will stop
this by moving slowly so prevent the chair from tipping.
I could accidently knock over the lights in the studio. To
prevent this from happening, I will place them where I
cant knock them but they are still effective.
54. CONTINGENCY PLAN
There is a possibility of the college studio being double
booked. If this happens, I will use a room in my house
and put black paper to try and create the same effect.
My camcorder could die during filming. To stop this from
happening, I will bring spare batteries.
I could loose my SD card and/or the footage. To stop
this, I will back up the footage onto One Drive.
On the day of filming, I could forget my camcorder. I will
put it in my bag the night before to prevent this.
55. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Monday 18.10.21 – Booked college studio for filming
(9:00am – 12:00pm)
Monday 18.10.21 – Editing the footage (12:00pm –
4:30pm)
56. CLEARANCE AND
