Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
Product 1
• This product is a music video about the song Rock + Roll by EDEN who is the same singer I will be
making a music video about. Because of this I have tried to find themes that this singer has in his
music videos so that I can implement them into mine so that the audience recognises the singer.
• I like the start of this music video because at the start the video it is like a old fashioned recording
giving the audience the idea that what you see in the video is a mix of a memory and now and this
happens throughout the video to remind the person watching (example in the bottom right). I also
like how in this music video there are a range of different clips that show the singer traveling and
show the singer in a different place making the audience feel as if they’re actually going on a trip
with the singer and makes the audience feel more connected to the song, I also think this effect
happens when the singer does a close up in the video because it allows you to see the emotion on
the singers face at different points and get a rough idea of how it makes him feel.
• I will try to use a lot of the ideas in this music video in mine as well. For example I will be using the
idea of a close up and possibly the idea of making certain clips look like old recordings to help give
off the idea of past and current. In this video there are many other techniques that are used which I
like, for example there are many different methods of transitions in the music video such as putting
there hand on the camera, point the camera down and then back up and having the screen flicker or
flash instead of using the same method each time. I think these ideas suit the theme of this song
really well because they can be slowed down or sped up to match the current tone in the song for
example at parts the song needs a slow transition so the transition of putting the hand over the
camera slowly is used but when they need to quickly change to another clip because the pace is
starting to pick up or they’re going through shots faster they will use a flash or flicker to go through
them faster without effecting the tone too much. However in some parts the flash/flicker suits the
sounds in the music better then doing one of the other slower ones so it is used instead.
Product 2
• This product is a music video for the song “idfc” by a singer known as blackbear. I have chosen to do
research on this artist too because his work is very similar to the music that I’m making a music
video to, so I will be trying to find themes and techniques that are used in both of the artists video’s.
• This music video is very similar to the other product I researched because in the EDEN music video
he is talking about the past and now whereas in this music video the singer is talking about their day
to day life and how it makes them feel. To help get this across to the audience the maker of the
music video has used mainly close ups of the character so you can see their facial expressions. The
creator of this music video has also added a large amount of shots where you see the singer
traveling and they have made sure that these shots go with the beat of the music as well as keeping
to the tone of the music and adding more to the story sucking the audience in.
• In my music video I will add a range of different shots like this music video has to help my product
be more appealing to my audience. For example in this music video the creator has used shots and
clips such as close up, extreme close up, above shot, panoramic clips. These different shots help to
make the transitions smoother in post and makes the sound have a larger effect on the listener. For
example in this music video when the singer does a long note into the next verse they have added a
shot where the singer is traveling to help resemble that.
Product 3
This music video is different to the others I have researched because even though it is the same
singer as the song on product 1
Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
Conventions
• I am going to use a more cinematic style to keep to the theme of my
artist and stick to my creative ideas which will most likely result in
not having people in my shots and just sticking to the environment
however there will still be a small amount of people in the
background sometimes.
• The main shots that I will be using will be long shot, above shots and
cinematic clips however I may end up using others when collecting
my shots/clips.
• if in any shots there are characters I will make sure they’re wearing
casual clothes so that they stick to the theme of the song.
• The environment that my shots will take place in will be quite gloomy
to again stick with the tone of the song and to have a bigger impact
on the person watching.
Genre Chacteristics
• The song that I will be basing my video around will be slow paced and
emotional because the song is based around the singer. This will
make the genre of my music video quite gloomy and not as up beat
as many other songs because of this a lot of my transitions and shot
movement speeds will be slow to stick to the beat of the music.
• Because of the tone of the song I will try to stick to urban
environments when recording my shots however there will still be
some shots that take place in rural environments such as York etc.
Chosen approach/justification
• To make my product the first thing that I will do will be collecting a range of
different shots that match the theme and tone of the chosen song. Many of the
shots that I collect I will not use however I will still collect a large amount of
different shots so that if I need more or want to use a different one I will already
have one available and wont have to waste time going to get more. After I have
all my shots I will import all of them onto premier pro, import the song I have
chosen and decide which shots I will use and where they are going to go in my
music video. I will do this in premier pro because then I am able to see which
shots/clips suit certain parts of the song better then others more accurately
because I am able to cut down the clips and edit them so that they suit the music
better while on premier. Once I have put all the shots/clips in that I need I will
add the transitions to my clips so that my music video is a lot smoother, more
professional and is more visually appealing to the audience. However these
transitions will not all be the same because some will suit different parts of the
beat better and using more then one transition will make my music video more
interesting to the audience as well as sticking to the singers normal editing style
in his music video’s so that the audience can know its by that singer just by
seeing the video.
