Problem Solving and
Experiments
Experiment Number One - Lighting
Experiment Number One - Process
To get this product the first thing I did was
find the appropriate photo of Kimi Raikkonen.
I wanted a shot where there was light
portrayed on his face but wasn’t overexposed
so I could still see his facial features.
Once I found my picture, I decided to cut him
out using the pen tool, this tool is perfect for
cutting around smooth surfaces as you can
create a curve by holding the tool.
Once this had been cut out I moved onto the
background and details but this is what it
looked like after I cut him out and added a
shadow at his feet to add depth to the driver.
Experiment Number One - Process
After cutting out the driver and adding a shadow I moved onto
what he was going to be stood on. I wanted a snow theme as
his name is ‘the iceman’, this theme would need to be simple.
I found this snow texture on adobe stock photos and it was
perfect for what I wanted. I also added an ice texture over the
top and used a mask to erase the middle of the texture so the
driver wasn’t covered up as much.
I also used solid colour layers and inverted the masks on the
layers. Using a soft brush I could dictate the shadows and
colours of the product and this helped create light areas for the
light to be coming from.
This is what it looked liked after I did the floor and texture.
Experiment Number One - Process
I had the background and driver sorted for the
time being but I needed to add a tone to the
whole project, using colour look up helped me
create this midnight ice colour and helped the
effect that the driver is in an Icey setting.
Pairing this with a snow overlay texture brought
the whole page alive and helped sell the whole
effect of the driver being in a snowstorm
setting, the only thing left to do was to add a
camera raw filter and use a hue and saturation
layer to dictate the lighting of the page.
Experiment One - Process
The technique I was trying to experiment here was light
dictation, I have seen on many examples of edits that
lighting is key to make an object, person or character
look like it belongs in that location.
To do this you make a hue and saturation layer, click
colourise and then clip it to the object you want to light,
I chose a white light as my driver was in snow
environment and I wanted that snow/white light effect
that light has going through an ice cube.
Using this hue and saturation I inverted the layer and
they used my white brush to colour the places where
light touched the driver then altering the opacity and
flow I used the black brush to blend the colour.
I think this technique worked out well and I think I can
definitely improve on pieces in my FMP.

Second Experiment - Rotoscoping
Experiment Number Two - Process
The first step in the rotoscoping process is finding a good picture.
The key to rotoscoping is that less is more, so you need to find a
picture that is simple but it has a good level of detail so you will be
able to portray what it is to your audience.
For my rotoscoping experiment I chose to use this giraffe as I feel
like it has a lot of detail. However, it has a lot of potential for a
colour scheme.
Experiment Number Two - Process
Rotoscoping is a very simple process where you cut around pieces
of an object, copy the selection, then clip a solid colour to that
copied selection.
For this image I cut around each piece of the giraffe with the
polygonal lasso tool, copied it then chose a dark brown to have the
giraffe somewhat realistic.
For the other pieces I chose a lighter sort of brown to create a
contrast to the giraffe and this also helped me highlight areas like
the top of the ear.
I think this part of the process went very well, as the giraffe looked
good with just two colours but it was missing something
Experiment Number Two – Process
The final step was to colour in the empty space on the giraffe, for
this you would have to cut around the whole giraffe then choose
a colour that fits with the giraffes colour scheme, after this you
would add a stroke effect around each piece to make the colours
pop.
However, I just chose to make the background the same colour so
it ran through the picture, I think this looked really cool and
added to the simplicity of the rotoscoping effect.
Problem Solving
Technical Problems
Doing a print project will rely on equipment and computers working
and helping me complete my product in a smooth manor. As we know,
this wont always happen and problems will always happen with
projects and being prepared for them is the best way to avoid or find
solutions before they happen.
Some technical problems include: Computers Breaking, Files Being Lost,
My Ability, Power, Storage. I will be going through solutions to these
problems in the next coming slides.
Technical Problems – My ability.
Sometimes in projects you can picture something you want to make
and you know what the final product will look like. However, you ability
cannot match the complexity of what you want to make and you are
stuck on what you are going to do as your head is set on that one effect
and you cannot make it due to your ability.
To avoid this happening I will research tutorials before going into the
production to reinforce my ability on what I want to make. Avoiding
this will be key in print work as using these effects to a professional
standard is the difference between a good and bad print piece.
Technical Problems – Computers Breaking
Another huge part of print work in this project is the fact its going to be
digital. Computer problems always occur and finding ways around
these problems might be hard or impossible.
One of these problems is computers breaking at college making
production impossible to carry out on those computers.
An easy way around this is using my own laptop which has photoshop
on it to use in production. I will have to bring this into college to work
on my production.
This is another key part of production as if a computer breaks it will
make production nearly impossible.
Technical Problems – Files Being Lost/Deleted
Another problem with digital production is the fact that all things
created is not a physical thing and there is a huge risk of these files
getting lost in emails or getting deleted all together with no way of
them getting back. If this happens it will be detrimental to your
production as it takes you back to square one and ruins the flow of
your production as you are going backwards not forwards.
To avoid this I will save my files and pictures on a cloud, also I will save
them on multiple computers, this will help me know that my files wont
get lost and also that I can access them anywhere making production
smoother.
Theoretical Problems
Theoretical Problems
With my look book idea, theoretical problems wont be as prominent as
the technical problems as my look book will use pictures from internet
and alter them to avoid copyright.
Some theoretical problems will crop up in my work however. These
theoretical problems could include: People not turning up for
photography, finances, models, facilitating these models, production.
Just like technical problems overcoming these theoretical problems is
key for your project to go well. For my project these problems can have
simple solutions,
Theoretical Problems
For most of my pages I will be using photography that has been taken over the past three years and are owned
by myself. However, for later pages I may take photography of people myself and try and edit driver features
over these people.
For a quick and smooth process with photography I need to plan my shoots in advance and go through the
steps with them so they know what they are doing for the shoots. However, problems do occur with people
and I have to try and find solutions before these problems happen.
The first problem that may occur could be the fact that some models cannot make the shoot as something else
has come up in their schedule. This could be a big blow for the project as they are used in a big way for the
magazine. To combat this problem I will have multiple secondary options waiting so if my first choice cannot
make it I can get these people in to fill in for them.
The second problem that may occur could happen is the availability of location for these shoots. Having pre
drawn out locations for these shoots is another key part of a smooth photography session and sometimes
these locations are not available. A solution to this problem is to book in advance the locations that you are
going to use and going though how you and your models are going to get their before the shoot.
The final problem that could occur is time. Finding the right shot in a short amount of time can be an extremely
difficult task and getting these shots is key to the production of the look book. A problem that can occur is that
you run out of time, this problem will effect the production outside of the photography so finding a solution to
this will be crucial. The solution I have come up with is having alternatives to what you are planning on doing.
So, for photography I will use camera’s at home and use members of my family to be in the look book instead
of models. Then for the actual production, spending time on the weekends will help me combat the time limit I
have for this project.

Problem solving and experiments

  • 3. Experiment Number One - Process To get this product the first thing I did was find the appropriate photo of Kimi Raikkonen. I wanted a shot where there was light portrayed on his face but wasn’t overexposed so I could still see his facial features. Once I found my picture, I decided to cut him out using the pen tool, this tool is perfect for cutting around smooth surfaces as you can create a curve by holding the tool. Once this had been cut out I moved onto the background and details but this is what it looked like after I cut him out and added a shadow at his feet to add depth to the driver.
  • 4. Experiment Number One - Process After cutting out the driver and adding a shadow I moved onto what he was going to be stood on. I wanted a snow theme as his name is ‘the iceman’, this theme would need to be simple. I found this snow texture on adobe stock photos and it was perfect for what I wanted. I also added an ice texture over the top and used a mask to erase the middle of the texture so the driver wasn’t covered up as much. I also used solid colour layers and inverted the masks on the layers. Using a soft brush I could dictate the shadows and colours of the product and this helped create light areas for the light to be coming from. This is what it looked liked after I did the floor and texture.
  • 5. Experiment Number One - Process I had the background and driver sorted for the time being but I needed to add a tone to the whole project, using colour look up helped me create this midnight ice colour and helped the effect that the driver is in an Icey setting. Pairing this with a snow overlay texture brought the whole page alive and helped sell the whole effect of the driver being in a snowstorm setting, the only thing left to do was to add a camera raw filter and use a hue and saturation layer to dictate the lighting of the page.
  • 6. Experiment One - Process The technique I was trying to experiment here was light dictation, I have seen on many examples of edits that lighting is key to make an object, person or character look like it belongs in that location. To do this you make a hue and saturation layer, click colourise and then clip it to the object you want to light, I chose a white light as my driver was in snow environment and I wanted that snow/white light effect that light has going through an ice cube. Using this hue and saturation I inverted the layer and they used my white brush to colour the places where light touched the driver then altering the opacity and flow I used the black brush to blend the colour. I think this technique worked out well and I think I can definitely improve on pieces in my FMP. With lighting Without lighting
  • 7. Second Experiment - Rotoscoping
  • 8. Experiment Number Two - Process The first step in the rotoscoping process is finding a good picture. The key to rotoscoping is that less is more, so you need to find a picture that is simple but it has a good level of detail so you will be able to portray what it is to your audience. For my rotoscoping experiment I chose to use this giraffe as I feel like it has a lot of detail. However, it has a lot of potential for a colour scheme.
  • 9. Experiment Number Two - Process Rotoscoping is a very simple process where you cut around pieces of an object, copy the selection, then clip a solid colour to that copied selection. For this image I cut around each piece of the giraffe with the polygonal lasso tool, copied it then chose a dark brown to have the giraffe somewhat realistic. For the other pieces I chose a lighter sort of brown to create a contrast to the giraffe and this also helped me highlight areas like the top of the ear. I think this part of the process went very well, as the giraffe looked good with just two colours but it was missing something
  • 10. Experiment Number Two – Process The final step was to colour in the empty space on the giraffe, for this you would have to cut around the whole giraffe then choose a colour that fits with the giraffes colour scheme, after this you would add a stroke effect around each piece to make the colours pop. However, I just chose to make the background the same colour so it ran through the picture, I think this looked really cool and added to the simplicity of the rotoscoping effect.
  • 12. Technical Problems Doing a print project will rely on equipment and computers working and helping me complete my product in a smooth manor. As we know, this wont always happen and problems will always happen with projects and being prepared for them is the best way to avoid or find solutions before they happen. Some technical problems include: Computers Breaking, Files Being Lost, My Ability, Power, Storage. I will be going through solutions to these problems in the next coming slides.
  • 13. Technical Problems – My ability. Sometimes in projects you can picture something you want to make and you know what the final product will look like. However, you ability cannot match the complexity of what you want to make and you are stuck on what you are going to do as your head is set on that one effect and you cannot make it due to your ability. To avoid this happening I will research tutorials before going into the production to reinforce my ability on what I want to make. Avoiding this will be key in print work as using these effects to a professional standard is the difference between a good and bad print piece.
  • 14. Technical Problems – Computers Breaking Another huge part of print work in this project is the fact its going to be digital. Computer problems always occur and finding ways around these problems might be hard or impossible. One of these problems is computers breaking at college making production impossible to carry out on those computers. An easy way around this is using my own laptop which has photoshop on it to use in production. I will have to bring this into college to work on my production. This is another key part of production as if a computer breaks it will make production nearly impossible.
  • 15. Technical Problems – Files Being Lost/Deleted Another problem with digital production is the fact that all things created is not a physical thing and there is a huge risk of these files getting lost in emails or getting deleted all together with no way of them getting back. If this happens it will be detrimental to your production as it takes you back to square one and ruins the flow of your production as you are going backwards not forwards. To avoid this I will save my files and pictures on a cloud, also I will save them on multiple computers, this will help me know that my files wont get lost and also that I can access them anywhere making production smoother.
  • 17. Theoretical Problems With my look book idea, theoretical problems wont be as prominent as the technical problems as my look book will use pictures from internet and alter them to avoid copyright. Some theoretical problems will crop up in my work however. These theoretical problems could include: People not turning up for photography, finances, models, facilitating these models, production. Just like technical problems overcoming these theoretical problems is key for your project to go well. For my project these problems can have simple solutions,
  • 18. Theoretical Problems For most of my pages I will be using photography that has been taken over the past three years and are owned by myself. However, for later pages I may take photography of people myself and try and edit driver features over these people. For a quick and smooth process with photography I need to plan my shoots in advance and go through the steps with them so they know what they are doing for the shoots. However, problems do occur with people and I have to try and find solutions before these problems happen. The first problem that may occur could be the fact that some models cannot make the shoot as something else has come up in their schedule. This could be a big blow for the project as they are used in a big way for the magazine. To combat this problem I will have multiple secondary options waiting so if my first choice cannot make it I can get these people in to fill in for them. The second problem that may occur could happen is the availability of location for these shoots. Having pre drawn out locations for these shoots is another key part of a smooth photography session and sometimes these locations are not available. A solution to this problem is to book in advance the locations that you are going to use and going though how you and your models are going to get their before the shoot. The final problem that could occur is time. Finding the right shot in a short amount of time can be an extremely difficult task and getting these shots is key to the production of the look book. A problem that can occur is that you run out of time, this problem will effect the production outside of the photography so finding a solution to this will be crucial. The solution I have come up with is having alternatives to what you are planning on doing. So, for photography I will use camera’s at home and use members of my family to be in the look book instead of models. Then for the actual production, spending time on the weekends will help me combat the time limit I have for this project.
