Idea Development and Planning
Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting.
Analyse what you have gathered.
Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen
style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to
realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
Documentary: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources etc etc.
Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents etc etc.
Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources etc etc.
Mood board (or other idea development work):
Content:
The type of style my fanzine will be using is a modern take on a retro style. I will achieve this by using sans-serif fonts, these fonts will make my
fanzine look modern but also simplistic, this will appeal to my target audience which will be young adults to males in their mid thirties. This blocky
font will make the front cover and headlines look strong and bold and will catch the eyes of the reader. Many magazines already use this font to
appeal to their target audiences which are similar to mine. I will also include serif fonts to give a good contrast between articles and to create a fresh
feel for some pages in the fanzine, i will also contrast these fonts on the front cover to draw the readers eyes to certain articles on the front cover.
I will be using a variety of colours within my magazine but the main colour I will be using will be the colour red. This is used a lot in this genre of
magazine to appeal to the target audience, the colour gives connotations of strength and masculinity. With my target audience being young adults to
mid thirties this will appeal to these people. However, with using motorsport as my main topic this will create an opportunity to create unique colour
mixtures as motorsport is full of exciting and colourful liveries, I can explore the contrasting colours of these cars to make them stand out even more
on the page to draw the readers attentions to certain parts of the page. I have also learnt that my target audience of males prefer the colours like
orange, blue, green and black. I will use these colours to make certain things in the magazine stand out, these colours will please my target audience.
I can also use these colours to influence certain feelings from the reader. For example, I could use colours that my target audience like with a certain
story to make them associate that story with something positive and the opposite with colours they don’t like with a bad thing.
I will make a lot of double page spreads where the picture carries across both pages to create some disruption through the magazine, this is also to
guide the eyes of the reader around the page. This will play into the simplistic nature of my magazine and will match the sans serif fonts.
I will include in-depth stories on certain drivers in the sport of Formula One to inspire my target audience, I found out that my target audience is part
of the ABC1 bracket and are achievers, this means they want to pursue a successful careers and want to be the best they can be in their field of
career. These in-depth stories will inspire my target audience and will make my magazine popular with these people as they want to be motivated to
push them to be successful in their career.
My magazine will have a modern twist on old classic motorsport magazines, from my research I have found out my target audience don’t read
magazines from all types of media, to make my magazine popular with my age demographic I will make the style of it modern so it attracts them, also
it will stand out against the typical old style of motorsport magazines.
Another thing I will include in my magazine to appeal to my target audience will be including website suggestions for Formula One content, the
reason I will include this I because from my research I found out my age demographic spend 13% of their spare time on their screen, the way ill
attract them to my magazine is by giving them suggestions for websites they can go on to get Formula One information.
My magazine will have lots of articles within them to appeal to my target audience, the reason for this is that from my research I have learnt that 47%
of the young people enjoy reading and writing in their spare time. Making my magazine with lots of articles will please this target audience as they
will enjoy reading through the stories and news in Formula One.
Planning:
My magazine is going to have lots of different content. The main story that I will write about will be the 2019 Silverstone
Grand Prix. I attended this event in 2019 and have lots of photos and information I can use to write an article about it. The
Formula One YouTube channel uploads highlights about each race so this will guide me on what to write about with events
for the race. The main story will be a double page spread with a photo going across both pages. Another story I’m going to
write about is the Formula One career of Charles Leclerc, I will use a picture of Charles on one side of the page then write
the article for the other side of the page.
My front cover will follow the main features of the MotorSport magazine. However, it will have a different modern style to it
to give it a unique style.
My front cover style will reflect over the whole magazine and will also follow what I have found out in my research.
My research has taught me what colours to use to appeal to my target audience, it has also taught me what content I
should include. The magazine will be mainly articles around the sport as I found out that my target audience likes to spend
their spare time reading and writing. I will also include pieces from motorsport websites as 13% of my audiences spare time
is spent on their screens.
The main content in my magazine will be double page spreads with little information about the driver or team that is
displayed and im going to focus on creating high quality pieces of work that showcase good photoshop ability, this will be
achieved by creating unique styles with content such as fact files or season summaries. I think this is the best way to achieve
the highest grade as I can showcase my photoshop ability.
My front cover will be a retro style piece with modern photography, I will use retro colour schemes and fonts to give the
whole page a retro feel to it. My first three pages will be a fact file style of page with backgrounds with the cars and their
constructor logo, next to their car I will put in various information about the driver and interesting stats to meet the criteria.
After that I will be making more complex pieces with the same ‘fact file’ feel to them, I will be using more skills. For
example, using masks , camera raw filter and things like the use of brushes to create different effects on images.
This is an example of what I will make for my fanzine, it
showcases a high level of photoshop skill with
information about who the driver is. I will focus on the
fanzine being a showcase of my photoshop skill instead
of taking time to write articles when I can use that time
to make my photoshop work better and try and achieve a
higher grade.
This also showcases the colours I will be trying to use, a
contrast between darks and immediate bright colours like
blues and purples. This will help catch the readers eyes
and I will be able to guide the attention of the reader to
certain parts of the page or try and guide their eyes
towards the information of the page.
The tools I used for this page was; Camera Raw Filter,
Polygonal lasso tool, Vanishing Point, Gradient and Drop
Shadow text tools. This wide range of ability to use these
tools will help me to achieve a higher grade.
Production Schedule:
Week Content What I am going to do
Week 1 In the first week I
would like to make
3 double page
spreads and a front
cover.
The first thing I am going to do to is focus on the front cover, the retro style I
am going to create is going to be achieved by looking at retro magazines from
past decades and I'm going to take features from there and recreate them with
a modern twist.
Next I'm going to create three of my easy double page spreads, these will be
the fact file double page spreads, these will be made using my own
imagination and taking colour schemes and information from my
planning/research to create a successful page. These three pages will follow
the same simple style but have their own unique twist.
Week 2 In this week I am
going to make 3
double page
spreads but focus
on more complex
pages
The first pages I am going to make are gonna be using techniques I have used
in my experiments as they will be the easiest of the complex pieces. These
pages will be the Lewis Hamilton smoke edit and the Mick Schumacher scatter
edit using masks and brushes.
After this I will move onto the edit of Kimi Raikkonnen where I will use all the
skills from each page I have made throughout the magazine. I will be making
the background from scratch with a retro style. I will also make the picture I cut
out look like it is in that scene with reflections, colour and shading editing

My magazine will have a modern twist on old classic motorsport magazines, from my research I have found out my target audience don’t read magazines from all types of media, to make my magazine popular with my age demographic I will make the style of it modern so it attracts them, also it will stand out against the typical old style of motorsport magazines. Another thing I will include in my magazine to appeal to my target audience will be including website suggestions for Formula One content, the reason I will include this I because from my research I found out my age demographic spend 13% of their spare time on their screen, the way ill attract them to my magazine is by giving them suggestions for websites they can go on to get Formula One information. My magazine will have lots of articles within them to appeal to my target audience, the reason for this is that from my research I have learnt that 47% of the young people enjoy reading and writing in their spare time. Making my magazine with lots of articles will please this target audience as they will enjoy reading through the stories and news in Formula One.
  • 5. Planning: My magazine is going to have lots of different content. The main story that I will write about will be the 2019 Silverstone Grand Prix. I attended this event in 2019 and have lots of photos and information I can use to write an article about it. The Formula One YouTube channel uploads highlights about each race so this will guide me on what to write about with events for the race. The main story will be a double page spread with a photo going across both pages. Another story I’m going to write about is the Formula One career of Charles Leclerc, I will use a picture of Charles on one side of the page then write the article for the other side of the page. My front cover will follow the main features of the MotorSport magazine. However, it will have a different modern style to it to give it a unique style. My front cover style will reflect over the whole magazine and will also follow what I have found out in my research. My research has taught me what colours to use to appeal to my target audience, it has also taught me what content I should include. The magazine will be mainly articles around the sport as I found out that my target audience likes to spend their spare time reading and writing. I will also include pieces from motorsport websites as 13% of my audiences spare time is spent on their screens. The main content in my magazine will be double page spreads with little information about the driver or team that is displayed and im going to focus on creating high quality pieces of work that showcase good photoshop ability, this will be achieved by creating unique styles with content such as fact files or season summaries. I think this is the best way to achieve the highest grade as I can showcase my photoshop ability. My front cover will be a retro style piece with modern photography, I will use retro colour schemes and fonts to give the whole page a retro feel to it. My first three pages will be a fact file style of page with backgrounds with the cars and their constructor logo, next to their car I will put in various information about the driver and interesting stats to meet the criteria. After that I will be making more complex pieces with the same ‘fact file’ feel to them, I will be using more skills. For example, using masks , camera raw filter and things like the use of brushes to create different effects on images.
  • 6. This is an example of what I will make for my fanzine, it showcases a high level of photoshop skill with information about who the driver is. I will focus on the fanzine being a showcase of my photoshop skill instead of taking time to write articles when I can use that time to make my photoshop work better and try and achieve a higher grade. This also showcases the colours I will be trying to use, a contrast between darks and immediate bright colours like blues and purples. This will help catch the readers eyes and I will be able to guide the attention of the reader to certain parts of the page or try and guide their eyes towards the information of the page. The tools I used for this page was; Camera Raw Filter, Polygonal lasso tool, Vanishing Point, Gradient and Drop Shadow text tools. This wide range of ability to use these tools will help me to achieve a higher grade.
  • 7. Production Schedule: Week Content What I am going to do Week 1 In the first week I would like to make 3 double page spreads and a front cover. The first thing I am going to do to is focus on the front cover, the retro style I am going to create is going to be achieved by looking at retro magazines from past decades and I'm going to take features from there and recreate them with a modern twist. Next I'm going to create three of my easy double page spreads, these will be the fact file double page spreads, these will be made using my own imagination and taking colour schemes and information from my planning/research to create a successful page. These three pages will follow the same simple style but have their own unique twist. Week 2 In this week I am going to make 3 double page spreads but focus on more complex pages The first pages I am going to make are gonna be using techniques I have used in my experiments as they will be the easiest of the complex pieces. These pages will be the Lewis Hamilton smoke edit and the Mick Schumacher scatter edit using masks and brushes. After this I will move onto the edit of Kimi Raikkonnen where I will use all the skills from each page I have made throughout the magazine. I will be making the background from scratch with a retro style. I will also make the picture I cut out look like it is in that scene with reflections, colour and shading editing

Editor's Notes

  1. You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting. Analyse what you have gathered.
  2. Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
  3. Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine. Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources. Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents. Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
  4. Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
