TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant

Placebo – Running up that hill
Keith Urban – Heart like mine
Bastille – Joy
Bastille – those things
Placebo– Too many friends
Jonas Brothers – Don’t throw it away
Keith Urban – Somewhere in my car
POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
•Birds eye view shot
•Multiple medium close ups
•Tracking shots
•Close ups
•Fade out/ fade in
•Invisible cut
•Match cuts
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
The genre of this song is alternative/indie and the
conventions of this include lip syncing and multiple close
ups and medium close ups on the character
In my video I will aim to …
•Lip syncing
•Medium close ups
•Close ups
•Set on the streets – low budget ( convention of the genre)
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•Includes different angles and shots
•A lot of advanced editing techniques which will give me
the chance to practice them and perfect them
•My idea is flexible so if something doesn't work then I
will be able to adjust the idea so that it will work
•Gives me the practice of working with the camera and
trying out different shots and angles and find which ones
work best
•The particular song is a good choice for the use of
rhythmic editing, which will be a good learning
opportunity to edit to the music
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
•Includes difficult camera angles and if they aren’t
executed right then it won’t look good
•Getting the right person for the role of the character – so
they’re easy to work with
•May find editing difficult as I am wanting to use more
advanced techniques for example, having certain things
in colour and other things in black and white
•Lip syncing – getting the character saying the words on
the right time and making it look as natural as possible
•Finding the right location to film
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Joy by Bastille
‘Joy’ by Bastille fits into the alternative/indie genre and was released in
2019. Bastille are an English band that originated in London however it
started out as a solo project for Dan Smith, before turning into a band
with Chris Wood, William Farquarson and Kyle Simmons. The name
comes from Bastille day which is celebrated on Smith’s birthday.
Artists similar to Bastille are Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club
and Walk the moon as they are all alternative/indie. This genre started
out as being quite low budget, and normally included a narrative that
the audience can relate to. The music videos from these genres tend to
include close up on the singers to help advertise them and introduce
them. The cuts are normally done faster or slower to fit with the beat of
the video, the videos also have an old/worn out filter over them so it
looks a little older however as the genre has progressed since the early
2000s the music videos tend to be moving further away from the
stereotypical view on them. However many videos still support this
outlook for example Bastille’s Pompeii video that was released in 2013,
supports this as it shows the singer lip syncing to the lyrics and
multiple medium close ups and close ups on the artist
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
The band have commented on the meaning of the song stating “Joy is that
moment at the end, that moment of redemption, where you wake up on the
kitchen floor and all the anxieties come flooding in… and a phone call or a
message from somebody... That can just bring you back... The smallest little
things that can just pull you back when you feel like you’re on the brink” The
song is written frm the perspective of someone entering an emotional
darkness and a simple phone call from somebody who cares brings them out
of it.
The song resembles the state of mind the character is in for example ‘waking
up on the kitchen floor’ reflects a state of vulnerability, and the lyric ‘feel my
pulse quickening’ implies he is anxious. Another line is ‘take a walk through
the wreckage’ so here he is talking about his state of mind however there are
light hearted moments when he says he pictures the caller roll their eyes over
the phone. He refers to himself as a ‘walking disaster’ and the caller is
dragging him away from self pity.
The song length is 3:12 and the music video length is 3:21, the beginning of
the song starts of at a steady pace, then the pre-chorus and the chorus get
quicker which relate to the lyrics of ‘pulse quickening’. Then towards the end
the bridge is the slowest part of the song.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
My idea is to have a character wake up on the floor and not
really know where they are, which results in them feeling
anxious and the camera zooms in to the character’s face/eye to
show we are going in their brain, where we see the character all
in black clothing to show his state of mind where they then see
the person call them which gives them the energy to get up and
leave, and we see them walking down the street where it is
dark and cloudy but very isolated to reflect their state of mind.
And as the song progresses we see the character’s state of
mind improve and this is shown by the world around him
getting lighter, busier etc. I can show this by using a fade
in/out in the background. Then at the bridge where it slows
down I would have it rewind back to the beginning where he is
lying on the floor again and zoom out from a black screen up
to a birds eye view with the character dressed in a red hoodie
and jeans which is what they were wearing at the beginning. By
doing this I would hope that the video looked like we were
inside the character’s head for the whole video where we see
how they really feel then by the end of it, where it ends how it
began with a birds eye view where we see the character get up
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My music video is to the song ‘Joy’ by Bastille, and the
idea for the video is inspired from many different music
videos that I have seen and I have taken ideas from all
the different videos and combined them into one,
however most of the ideas in my video I thought of and
just developed an idea from that.
My video will start off with a birds eye view on the
character lip syncing to the first verse, then zoom into
their face and have it cut to black then zoom out but
have it in black and white to represent their mind. Then
have it follow them out the door using a tracking shot,
and then cut to them walking forward down an isolated
street.
Most of the final video will start to look like my idea in
editing because most of my idea includes many editing
techniques for example having certain things turn to
color at certain points in the song
LOCATIONS
I only need 2/3 locations, the first bing a kitchen floor
which is easily accessible and then a street which is also
easily accessible and then a forest. These locations are
all available to me because where I live surrounded by
forests and easy to get to and it won’t cost me anything.
A risk is that if it turns out to be terrible weather the
walk to forest becomes dangerous. The weather doesn't
matter if its cloudy or sunny as it will be in black and
white
EQUIPMENT
I will need one of the cameras college provide and also a
tripod. I can get this by booking the kit through
blackboard. However my video is very minimal and
doesn’t include a lot of equipment, additionally I will also
need a video SD card to store all my footage on
FACILITIES
I will edit my video in premier pro on a PC as it is easily
accessible through college and I know how to use it to a
good standard.
PERSONNEL
CREW: I only need 2 to 3 people, one person to star in it
then me to do the camerawork and maybe a third person
to help out with the sound and also star in the video at
the very end if needed
CAST: The video only needs one person in it, and they
live near me so it is easy to transport them to where I live
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
There is only one person in the video, who will be
wearing blue jeans and a jumper it is a very simple
costume to reflect the character who describes
themselves as a ‘walking wreckage’. Additionally the
color doesn’t matter too much due to the video being in
black and white apart from a few parts in the video.
I’m not needing any props in my video to emphasize the
minimalistic style of the video.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
 Pre-visualisation and concept boards
 Storyboarding
 Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
 http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
 http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
TASK 3.2 Organisational
Planning
PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
LOCATIONS
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
RISK ASSESSMENT
CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
CONTINGENCY PLAN
PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
SCHEDULE
CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
PERMISSIONS FORMS
TASK 4.1 Production
Record/Log
PRODUCTION
RECORD/LOG
Keep track your filming and production work with the
camera here
You could add stills of your work with annotations
You should include any specific details about how your
filming went and what you did on set to enable you to
complete the work
You should include Call Sheets and relevant production
documents here
CALL SHEETS
This links with your schedule
Complete a call sheet for each production activity
Forms are on Blackboard
Insert into Powerpoint here

Use this for planning

  • 2. GUIDANCE This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video Assignment It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and share it with your group so you always have a copy – some sections require you to delete the information on the slide and replace with your own work Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be doing this!] Add visuals as you see necessary This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-production phase. Delete this slide when complete
  • 3. TASK 1 Idea Generation and Research
  • 4. RESEARCH & IDEA GENERATION Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!] Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently using different methods You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps, etc For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
  • 5. RESEARCH Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc and how this might link to your production Hint! You’ve already done this in your case study, so you can summarise that here where relevant

  • 8. CAMERAWORK/EDITING Snow Patrol – Chasing cars Birds eye view Panic! At the disco – High Hopes Medium close up Panic! At the disco – High Hopes Example of a tracking shot Panic! At the disco – Hey look Ma, I made it Close up Panic! At the disco – High Hopes In this clip the camera pans around the singer which is what I want to do in the video I create Exampl e of a match cut
  • 9. POTENTIAL SONGS Placebo – Running up that hill Keith Urban – Heart like mine Bastille – Joy Bastille – those things Placebo– Too many friends Jonas Brothers – Don’t throw it away Keith Urban – Somewhere in my car
  • 10. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES •Birds eye view shot •Multiple medium close ups •Tracking shots •Close ups •Fade out/ fade in •Invisible cut •Match cuts
  • 11. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO USE The genre of this song is alternative/indie and the conventions of this include lip syncing and multiple close ups and medium close ups on the character In my video I will aim to … •Lip syncing •Medium close ups •Close ups •Set on the streets – low budget ( convention of the genre)
  • 12. MIND MAP OF IDEAS [SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
  • 13. SUMMARY 5 opportunities of your ideas •Includes different angles and shots •A lot of advanced editing techniques which will give me the chance to practice them and perfect them •My idea is flexible so if something doesn't work then I will be able to adjust the idea so that it will work •Gives me the practice of working with the camera and trying out different shots and angles and find which ones work best •The particular song is a good choice for the use of rhythmic editing, which will be a good learning opportunity to edit to the music
  • 14. SUMMARY 5 restrictions to your ideas •Includes difficult camera angles and if they aren’t executed right then it won’t look good •Getting the right person for the role of the character – so they’re easy to work with •May find editing difficult as I am wanting to use more advanced techniques for example, having certain things in colour and other things in black and white •Lip syncing – getting the character saying the words on the right time and making it look as natural as possible •Finding the right location to film
  • 15. FINAL IDEA – ARTIST/TITLE/INFO Joy by Bastille ‘Joy’ by Bastille fits into the alternative/indie genre and was released in 2019. Bastille are an English band that originated in London however it started out as a solo project for Dan Smith, before turning into a band with Chris Wood, William Farquarson and Kyle Simmons. The name comes from Bastille day which is celebrated on Smith’s birthday. Artists similar to Bastille are Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club and Walk the moon as they are all alternative/indie. This genre started out as being quite low budget, and normally included a narrative that the audience can relate to. The music videos from these genres tend to include close up on the singers to help advertise them and introduce them. The cuts are normally done faster or slower to fit with the beat of the video, the videos also have an old/worn out filter over them so it looks a little older however as the genre has progressed since the early 2000s the music videos tend to be moving further away from the stereotypical view on them. However many videos still support this outlook for example Bastille’s Pompeii video that was released in 2013, supports this as it shows the singer lip syncing to the lyrics and multiple medium close ups and close ups on the artist
  • 16. FINAL IDEA – TRACK SUMMARY The band have commented on the meaning of the song stating “Joy is that moment at the end, that moment of redemption, where you wake up on the kitchen floor and all the anxieties come flooding in… and a phone call or a message from somebody... That can just bring you back... The smallest little things that can just pull you back when you feel like you’re on the brink” The song is written frm the perspective of someone entering an emotional darkness and a simple phone call from somebody who cares brings them out of it. The song resembles the state of mind the character is in for example ‘waking up on the kitchen floor’ reflects a state of vulnerability, and the lyric ‘feel my pulse quickening’ implies he is anxious. Another line is ‘take a walk through the wreckage’ so here he is talking about his state of mind however there are light hearted moments when he says he pictures the caller roll their eyes over the phone. He refers to himself as a ‘walking disaster’ and the caller is dragging him away from self pity. The song length is 3:12 and the music video length is 3:21, the beginning of the song starts of at a steady pace, then the pre-chorus and the chorus get quicker which relate to the lyrics of ‘pulse quickening’. Then towards the end the bridge is the slowest part of the song.
  • 17. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA My idea is to have a character wake up on the floor and not really know where they are, which results in them feeling anxious and the camera zooms in to the character’s face/eye to show we are going in their brain, where we see the character all in black clothing to show his state of mind where they then see the person call them which gives them the energy to get up and leave, and we see them walking down the street where it is dark and cloudy but very isolated to reflect their state of mind. And as the song progresses we see the character’s state of mind improve and this is shown by the world around him getting lighter, busier etc. I can show this by using a fade in/out in the background. Then at the bridge where it slows down I would have it rewind back to the beginning where he is lying on the floor again and zoom out from a black screen up to a birds eye view with the character dressed in a red hoodie and jeans which is what they were wearing at the beginning. By doing this I would hope that the video looked like we were inside the character’s head for the whole video where we see how they really feel then by the end of it, where it ends how it began with a birds eye view where we see the character get up
  • 19. GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make your music video Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipment you would need and resources, etc Resources to support this are in the Pre-production assessment folder on Blackboard Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
  • 20. TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI ON OUTLINE My music video is to the song ‘Joy’ by Bastille, and the idea for the video is inspired from many different music videos that I have seen and I have taken ideas from all the different videos and combined them into one, however most of the ideas in my video I thought of and just developed an idea from that. My video will start off with a birds eye view on the character lip syncing to the first verse, then zoom into their face and have it cut to black then zoom out but have it in black and white to represent their mind. Then have it follow them out the door using a tracking shot, and then cut to them walking forward down an isolated street. Most of the final video will start to look like my idea in editing because most of my idea includes many editing techniques for example having certain things turn to color at certain points in the song
  • 21. LOCATIONS I only need 2/3 locations, the first bing a kitchen floor which is easily accessible and then a street which is also easily accessible and then a forest. These locations are all available to me because where I live surrounded by forests and easy to get to and it won’t cost me anything. A risk is that if it turns out to be terrible weather the walk to forest becomes dangerous. The weather doesn't matter if its cloudy or sunny as it will be in black and white
  • 22. EQUIPMENT I will need one of the cameras college provide and also a tripod. I can get this by booking the kit through blackboard. However my video is very minimal and doesn’t include a lot of equipment, additionally I will also need a video SD card to store all my footage on
  • 23. FACILITIES I will edit my video in premier pro on a PC as it is easily accessible through college and I know how to use it to a good standard.
  • 24. PERSONNEL CREW: I only need 2 to 3 people, one person to star in it then me to do the camerawork and maybe a third person to help out with the sound and also star in the video at the very end if needed CAST: The video only needs one person in it, and they live near me so it is easy to transport them to where I live
  • 25. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC There is only one person in the video, who will be wearing blue jeans and a jumper it is a very simple costume to reflect the character who describes themselves as a ‘walking wreckage’. Additionally the color doesn’t matter too much due to the video being in black and white apart from a few parts in the video. I’m not needing any props in my video to emphasize the minimalistic style of the video.
  • 26. TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
  • 27. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL PLANNING This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined process The following tasks are part of your visual planning  Pre-visualisation and concept boards  Storyboarding  Shot list
  • 28. PRE- VISUALISATION/CONCEP T BOARDS Tool for exploring the direction and visuals Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel” Presents key moments in your video A means to sketch/plan ideas Information on colour/lighting Defining the “mise-en-scene” Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add more as you need to Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for- hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
  • 29.
  • 30.
  • 31. RIP-O-MATIC You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to make
  • 32. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section You can use this as the master template for your production, then add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual plan You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song, then add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to break up the process.
  • 33. STORYBOARDING Your storyboard should bring your idea to life Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video Provides a basis for production Suggested online storyboard creators are:  https://www.storyboardthat.com  http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]  http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images] Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
  • 34. SHOT LIST Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video It should work in partnership with your storyboard It will be your working document when you film It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
  • 36. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production, using a table is suggested
  • 37. LOCATION INFORMATION Information and images of your location[s] for filming You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts] Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
  • 39. RISK ASSESSMENT Risk Assess each separate filming location using the table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point Completing a generic filming assessment would be a start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as you progress your production Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document, you should evaluate if anything changes in production and when you put control measures in place You should add the table to each call sheet for each location
  • 41. CONTINGENCY PLANNING Things go wrong Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to minimise the effect on production You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues for each] Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
  • 43. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE Provide an outline of what you will do on which days during production You should broadly plan to the following structure: - 2 weeks pre-production - 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days] - 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you filmed]
  • 45. CLEARANCE AND PERMISSIONS Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your video must have a completed form Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and insert here
  • 48. PRODUCTION RECORD/LOG Keep track your filming and production work with the camera here You could add stills of your work with annotations You should include any specific details about how your filming went and what you did on set to enable you to complete the work You should include Call Sheets and relevant production documents here
  • 49. CALL SHEETS This links with your schedule Complete a call sheet for each production activity Forms are on Blackboard Insert into Powerpoint here
