The student plans to film a music video for the song "Humility" by Gorillaz at Filey Beach in England. They will tell a story through the expressions of the main character about having their day ruined at the beach. They only need a camera, tripod, and editing software. Filming locations include the colorful town streets and changing beach environment. No props are needed, just appropriate costumes. The student and one other person will film over a weekend. Editing will be done in the classroom using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Francesca Gottschalk from the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation presents at the Ask an Expert Webinar: How can education support child empowerment?
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant
elements you need to cover in your Music Video Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and share it
with your group so you always have a copy – some sections require
you to delete the information on the slide and replace with your own
work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be
doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-
production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous
sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently
using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind
maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make
note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the
video and in bullet point note down info in terms of camera,
editing, art design, performance, etc and how this might link to
your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in your
case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. CLINT EASTWOOD
In the music video ‘Clint Eastwood’, the camera for the majority of the
video is either a very close up shot or extremely far away from the
characters.
One way the art is used is the way the spirit was animated. Firstly he is
transparent unlike everything else in the video, and also he has the
same look as an old fashioned TV which is used to suggest that he
isn't really there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V_xRb0x9aw&list=RD1V_xRb0x
9aw&start_radio=1
7. FEEL GOOD INC.
One way the editing is used in ‘Feel Good Inc.’ is at the very
beginning as you hear lots of distress and a gunshot, but once the
camera enters the building it’s complete silence to show the
characters are unaware of the outside.
In the video there is also a mix of animation and real life elements in
the video.
Also in the video, many different camera angles are shown for
multiple different effects and reasons in the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyHNuVaZJ-k
8. HOLD ME
Throughout the whole video, the camera looks more old fashioned
with the filter used and there is also a decrease in the levels of color
to add too this effect.
One way editing is used in ‘Hold Me’ is through the cactus and how
through the video it cuts between shots to show different expressions
on the characters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kO6rUoALSc
9. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
In the music video, the video creates another transparent layer to add
to the video.
The camera also has lots of movement during the video to follow the
band as they sing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ
10. THE DIARY OF HORACE
WIMP
Through the video, it keeps switching between animation and real life,
this is used as the animation is telling a story and the real life section
shows the band singing.
During the non-animated sections, the band also uses a green screen
to create a interesting background for the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFU9HYyMVxQ
12. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
One technique that could be used is to use a green screen to use an
area that would be impossible to film, this could also be risky as if not
done correctly, it looks very unrealistic and could ruin the video.
Small elements of animation could also be used, this also may
contain risk due to it not being fitting to the real world elements.
Effects can be used so it looks like the film was created in another
decade, the background and clothing would also need to match this
style or it would not work.
When making the video, you must decide whether to have the camera
still or have it move because either can be used in different ways.
13. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN
TO USE
A convention I plan to use in the video is the main character
being very naive about the world, as they are happy while the
world around them isn’t and they do not notice. This is can also
be done the other way around depending on the environment
that is filmed in
15. SUMMARY
Begin and end the video in the style of a home video, by
showing a person turn the camera on and off.
Film the video by the beach and show different environments in
the video
Have the camera be very mobile to create a faster paced video
Split the screen to include the same person multiple times in
one shot
Make the camera less lively and more still as the video
progresses.
16. SUMMARY
Having lively shots on the beach may be hard due to the sand
which may cause problems when using a tripod.
Splitting the screen may also cause issues due to needing to
film multiple times, external factors may cause problems.
Weather will be a very big factor during filming as it will take a
drastic effect on the surroundings.
The beach is far away so all the filming must be very well
planned or many different problems may arise.
Other people will also be needed to film my video, so this will
include much more planning which makes it harder to create
successfully
17. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Humility / Gorillaz
Every character in the band was created with their own story
and in each music video is animated. The band was created in
1998 in London and still make music now.
The band has many cameos with other music as they do often
with their music videos.
There music is a modern style of rock and on many occasions
blend different genres together in their music, pop is an
example of a genre of music they’ve blended with the classic
rock style
18. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace
and style of the song]
In the song ‘Humility’ the song is always lighthearted and upbeat
while having some upsetting music. The meaning of the song is about
being naive to the world which can be used in the video quite well.
The duration of the video is 3:20 which can give lots of room for
filming. The pace of the song is quite slow which matches lots of the
theme of being relaxed.
19. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation,
use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
I plan to create a good story with my video while also making the music
video look as good as possible. I plan to tell most of the story through
the characters expression about their day and making the audience
feel how the character is feeling.
21. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your music
video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to
investigate standard costings for such a production and apply
these to your planned production considering which equipment
you would need and resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
22. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My intended production is to make a music video intended to
create a compelling story with help of the music video
‘Humility’.
I am going to make a story of a person having their day ruined
by others on a bright, sunny beach. The lighthearted music
with more upsetting lyrics match very well with my video as it
helps drive the story forward.
The only equipment needed is a camera and editing software
to create the video successfully.
23. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost,
weather? How will you manage this?
The primary location I would like to use is Filey beach, as the area
can change moods drastically which will work well with the theme of
the song, the town there will also be drastically different based on the
time and season, which can be used in favor of the music video.
Other locations which can be used is a street in the town which is
bright and colorful, this could be helpful to start of the song and move
towards the beach.
24. EQUIPMENT
The most important thing that will be needed is a camera and a
tripod as I need the shots to be still. This can be booked in
college and used over the weekend.
Clothing fitting towards each character in the video, the main
character will use bright coloured clothes while side characters
will dress dark.
The most important thing that will be needed is a camera and a tripod

Clothing fitting towards each character in the video
25. FACILITIES
All editing will be done in the classroom and the main software
that will be used is Adobe Premiere Pro, this will be used to
edit the clips together and add music in the background where
needed.
26. PERSONNEL
There are only two people needed in my team, as I will be
doing all the editing alone and only need one other person for
filming.
I only need one other performer and we are getting driven to
the beach so there will be no issue with transport
The only other person helping who isn’t filming is the person
driving us to the beach.
27. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
No props will be needed through all the video. No costumes
will be needed either but outfits the characters are wearing do
need to be slightly specific.
29. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined
process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
32. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-hunger-games-
might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
33. PRE-VISUALISATION
The primary tool used to best go in the direction needed is the
software Adobe Premiere Pro, this is because since there are
so many different editing options, it can be used to achieve all
the edits needed for the video.
The look of the video should start bright and slowly get darker
as the video progresses. This should make the viewer feel
happy and get sadder as the video progresses.
Most key moments in the video will happen during the
choruses which are used to change the course of the video.
My ideas have been sketched through the storyboard and
each picture has a description underneath.
34. PRE-VISUALISATION 2
The colour at the beginning of the video will be bright, this will
be done through the saturation being raised on certain colours
at the beginning. Later in the video, the saturation will slowly
decrease with heavy drops in some areas of the video. The
lighting will generally remain the same throughout the video,
the lighting should be bright enough so the viewers can see
everything going on clear enough.
A mise-en-scene means to create a story inside the music
video through the setting or an event in the video.
35. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
40. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference
stages of production, using a table is suggested
Laurence Archer – Laurence-
Archer@student.yorkcollege.ac.uk – Filming, acting and editing
Jake Carr - 07809 902081 - Acting
41. LOCATION INFORMATION
The only location used through the film is Filey beach(YO14
9LA), no clearance will be needed as it is a public space, the
only problems that I may face during filming is the surface for
the tripod will not be even so it may be hard to stand it up at
times.
There will also be a couple shots in the town, this should
cause no issue while filming.
43. RISK ASSESSMENT
One risk while filming at the beach will be the large amounts of
wind, especially during autumn. This will have a drastic impact
on the audio when filming, this is because the sound of the
wind might overpower the voices or other noises , impacting
the overall quality.
Another issue while filming could be the surfaces the tripod will
be on, since the majority of the video will be filmed on sand,
the surface may be slanted or unbalanced.
There is also the possibility of rain, which can cause problems
for shooting as no shots in the video need rain. This can also
effect the camera lens because if water gets on it the camera
lens will be blurry in places.
44. RISK ASSESSMENT 2
Another problem that may occur is the tide on the beach, if the
tide is too far in I will be unable to film, and I will have too wait
a few hours before I can film, which will increase the chances
of it raining while I am filming.
45. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location,
Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
46. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Firstly, in case there is large amounts of wind, bring a wind
breaker to reduce the amounts of noise it makes if I need the
audio from footage.
To fix balancing and surfacing issues with the sand, I could
move the sand around and create a much better balancing
surface for the camera, this can also be used to create different
angle shot in the video.
The only way to avoid the risk of rain is by picking a day to film
with the smallest chance of it raining, if it does rain, you can
reduce the effects by using an object to cover the top of the
camera from the rain, this would not be very practical though.
47. CONTINGENCY PLAN 2
If we go to the beach and the tide is too far in, I can film in the
town and up the hill before moving to the beach as I can give it
time for the tide to move out.
48. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days during
production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you filmed]
49. SCHEDULE
I gave myself 3 weeks for pre-production, this is to prepare my
editing so it can go much quicker than normal.
I then gave myself one week to film as I needed time to plan
and travel so I could film as efficiently as possible
Finally I gave myself one week for editing as my pre-production
helped me speed up most of the editing process.
50. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
No permission forms were needed as I am only filming in a
public area so cameras were allowed.
53. PRODUCTION
RECORD/LOG
Keep track your filming and production work with the camera
here
You could add stills of your work with annotations
You should include any specific details about how your filming
went and what you did on set to enable you to complete the
work
You should include Call Sheets and relevant production
documents here
54. CALL SHEETS
This links with your schedule
Complete a call sheet for each production activity
Forms are on Blackboard
Insert into Powerpoint here
