RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Idea 1:
- Have lyrical links to the visuals throughout with a narrative.
- Have a variety of movement throughout with both the performer
and
the camera shots.
- Have the lighting change throughout corresponding to certain
sections in
the song e.g. galaxy lighting during the chorus.
- Include inventive camera transitions instead of just a sudden
change in
scenes e.g. a circular camera movement, camera follows arm
movements
into the transition.
- Put the performer in most if not all shots in the video with minimal
action behind
or around them to keep the focus fixed solely on them.
- Make the word ‘NASA’ pop up on the screen during the chorus
when it is said in
in the song for extra visual affect.
- Use the clip of the moon landing at the start including the audio
(not the song).
“one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”, then a rewind

RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATIONSong: NASA by Ariana
Grande
Idea 2:
-No narrative
- Have abstract/unique visuals that
maybe connect to some of the
lyrics
- no lip-syncing
- include special effects
- have inventive transitions
between shots instead of the
simple switch.
- editing to the beat
- have multiple shots on screen at
once
Idea 3:
- Have multiple dance performers
in the video
- Have a range of camera shots:
close-ups, medium and wide.
- Use a range of camera
movements: moving closer to the
performers, moving around them
etc.
- Use a green screen with the
performers to create the effect
that they are dancing in space.
RESEARCH
- On each the beats of the music there
were shot changes, or a certain action
was done at the same time making
the visuals and video sequence match
with the music. I should aim to do this
in my music video as it is effective.
- The performer was in almost every
single shot. For these shots he was
usually around the middle showing to
be the main focus in the videos. I
could aim to do this in my music
video as it makes the performer seem
more important than anything else.
- There was a mix of camera and
performer movement throughout the
video making it more interesting to
watch. At points the camera would
slowly zoom in to the main performer,
this is something I could consider for
my music video as it is again putting
all focus on the performer.
- The performance in the video was
minimalistic but effective. The song is
quite slow with a calming sound so
the small amount of performance in
- When the shot changed it was
done on a beat making the video
match up to the music which is an
effective editing technique that I
should consider using in my music
video.
- There was a range of camera
angels/shot types used in this
video including full shots, medium
shots, wide shots, high angled
shots and a range of closeups.
Using a range of shot types and
angels in a music video creates an
effect and interesting piece so this
is something I should consider
doing in my own video.
- This video has lots of bold colours
in it at all times, the main colour
being pink. This makes the video
stand out amongst others and
makes it more enjoyable to watch.
- There was lots of performance in
this video which again makes it
- The video starts off with a short
introductory story to help set the
scene.
- Different lighting is used throughout
to link into the theme of the video. A
lot of red lighting is effectively used to
keep the slight horror feel as the video
is set on the night before
Halloween. My use of lighting is
something I need to think about when
making my video.
- Editing: text is used throughout to
describe people in a comedic way for
effect. They also change the shot on
the beats in the music making the
video sequence and the audio connect
more. This is an effective technique
that I should use in my video.
- A range of camera shots and angles
are used throughout the video. Having
a range should be something that I
consider for my own music video.
- There were a lot of performers in this
video to make it more interesting and
enjoyable to watch. However they still
managed to keep the focus on the
- Most of the shot changes happened on a beat in the music which
connected the video sequence to the song well. I should aim to do this
in my video.
- All the shots have the main performer/artist featured generally in the
centre of the shot to signify his importantce within the video and to
keep the focus on him. This is something I should consider doing with
my main performer in my own video.
- Use of inventive transistions: there was a transition that involved the
camera moving around and then down instead of the plain simple
switch betweent shots. I should consider using a more creative
- Although there are a lot of performers in this music video the two main
performers/ the artist stay as the main foucs throughout the whole piece as
they are always front and centre wearing more stand-out outfits then
everyone else. If I have multiple performers in my video this is something I
should consider for the main person.
- The video contains some slow-motion shots throughout which is
something I could consider doing as it is a bit more complexed and
creative.

people's interests. He later signed with republic records
and released his debut EP 'sunset season' in
2018,multiple singles in 2019 and he released his studio
album 'Kid Krow' in 2020.
Genre info - Conans main two genres are pop and indie
pop; both of these are genres that I love.
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Song: Generation Why – Conan Gray
The term 'generation why' is commonly used for people
currently in their twenties who are labelled as being more
selfish than the generation before them. The song
explores how media portrays this selfish group who live
without any clear thoughts on what they want to do in
life. It also explores the struggles that they face
including world issues which also relates to younger
generations of today.
The song is indie pop, 3:41 in length and it is fairly slow
paced.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Indie-pop music videos are usually low budget and are
filmed in easily accessible places. I aim to do this to by
filming around where I live, in York, the woods and other
similar places which are cheap and easy to get to. I aim
to use a small bit of narrative for certain parts of the
song but mostly just imagery and lip syncing/playback
lip-syncing. I will also film clips of buildings, driving,
penny-boarding, nature and others. When editing I will
apply a soft filter to the whole video as most indie-pop
music videos have this. I also want to include some
hand-held camera shots as this is another low budget
type feature that usually looks quite effective.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINEMy aim is to make an Indie-pop music videos. These are usually low
budget and are filmed in easily accessible places. I aim to film
around where I live, in York, the woods and other similar places
which are cheap and easy to get to, so I stick to the low budget
aspect. I aim to use a small bit of narrative for certain parts of
the song but mostly just imagery and lip syncing/playback lip-
syncing. I will also film clips of buildings, driving, pennyboarding,
nature and others. When editing I will apply a soft filter to the whole
video, most likely a soft pink tone, as most indie-pop music videos
have this.
The song explores how media portrays this "selfish" group known as
generation why, who live without any clear thoughts on what they
want to do in life. It also shortly explores the struggles that they
face including world issues which also relates to younger
generations of today. The song is in an indie-pop style, 3:41 in
length and it is fairly slow paced.
I will be needing to use a camera or a phone to film the shots. I will
need a tripod to make some of the shots cleaner but will also
LOCATIONS
My house – my bedroom – free, accessible, need to be clean, need good lighting
– film during the day.
York city center – need to have good weather – check the forecast in advance,
travel costs – bus journey, needs to be fairly quiet – go on a weekday during
working hours (avoid lunch etc.).
Roads in my village – free, easily accessible, need to film in a quiet area –
minimal traffic for safety, need to have good weather – check the forecast in
advance, need to have good lighting – go out at a certain time of day.
In a car (driving) - need to plan time to go out onto the roads – could film while
on the way somewhere, need to have someone to drive – timing must be
convenient for both of us.
The woods – safety issues – need to make sure there isn't too much on the
ground that anyone could trip over – move anything that is possible to move out
of the way to decreased risk, need good lighting – go at a certain time of day,
need good weather – check the forecast in advance
The park – need it to be quiet – go during the week – pick a time where kids are
still in school, need good weather – check the forecast in advance, safety while
using equipment – use it sensibly, be careful of other people – might not want to
EQUIPMENT
Phone camera for filming – easily accessible – I can provide it, easy to
use, needs to be fully charged, camera lens needs to be carefully
cleaned for the best quality, need free storage space for the video clips.
Tripod - I can provide it, fits my phone, easy to set up, small so its
portable.
A speaker + phone – for playblack of the track, I can provide the
speaker, I have access to another phone, the speaker is small and
lightweight, so it is easily portable.
FACILITIES
To edit my video I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro as it
is provided by college and it is a professional, easy to
use software. To film my video I will be using my iphone
and a small tripod.
PERSONNEL
I will have my parents helping me with the filming part of
this project. They can give me access to some of the
places I will need to go to by driving me etc. They can
help film the parts of the video that I will be the peformer
in. For most of the shots I will be able to film them
myself. I may need to have some friends be performers
for a few shots in my video so I will need to organise a
date and time to meet them in the city centre if possible. I
will be the main performer of the video as it means I don’t
have to rely too much on others to be available when they
say they are.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I will be using a penny-board as one of the main props in
the video with me both riding it and just holding it. For
my costume I will just be wearing a few different or
maybe just one simple nice casual outfits which keeps it
low budget to fit with the indie-pop style video I am
going for. The main costume I will have will be blue
'mom' jeans, white top, beige trainers and a thin beige
jacket.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
I'm looking to place a filter similar
to this, over the video at the end
of my editing.
I'm going to include some
shots of me pennyboarding
down a street possibly
lipsyncing.
I plan to film in the woods.
Walking shots, lipsycing, nature
shots.
I plan to film in the park mainly
using the swings. - closeups,
lipsync, maybe slowmo
I plan to take some clips while
driving – scenery, other traffic, the
sky.

PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Filming Day 1:
I am planning on filming for about 1 hour on Wednesday the 4th. I plan on
going to Rowntrees park in York at around 11am to ensure that the park is as
quiet as possible. I shall also quickly go into York City Centre to look for the
best streets to film in on the second filming day. I also plan to film the short
village scenes when I get back from the park on this day.
SCHEDULE
Filming Day 2:
I am planning on filming for around 2 hours on Sunday
the 8th. I plan on going into York City Centre at around
8am to ensure the streets are as quiet as possible. I also
plan on getting a clip of the sunrise at around 7:20am
the same morning/on the way into York. Later on in the
day I plan on filming the sunset if possible and then the
scenes for my video that need to be set at night time.
Editing:
I have given myself up to 7 hours for my editing so I can
try and make the video as good as it can be. I will be
doing this during the time that I am in college. I have
given myself this length of time so my editing is not
rushed and also to allow for any problems that may
occur or so I have chance to tetany extra video clips if I
need to.

RESEARCH - On eachthe beats of the music there were shot changes, or a certain action was done at the same time making the visuals and video sequence match with the music. I should aim to do this in my music video as it is effective. - The performer was in almost every single shot. For these shots he was usually around the middle showing to be the main focus in the videos. I could aim to do this in my music video as it makes the performer seem more important than anything else. - There was a mix of camera and performer movement throughout the video making it more interesting to watch. At points the camera would slowly zoom in to the main performer, this is something I could consider for my music video as it is again putting all focus on the performer. - The performance in the video was minimalistic but effective. The song is quite slow with a calming sound so the small amount of performance in

    - When theshot changed it was done on a beat making the video match up to the music which is an effective editing technique that I should consider using in my music video. - There was a range of camera angels/shot types used in this video including full shots, medium shots, wide shots, high angled shots and a range of closeups. Using a range of shot types and angels in a music video creates an effect and interesting piece so this is something I should consider doing in my own video. - This video has lots of bold colours in it at all times, the main colour being pink. This makes the video stand out amongst others and makes it more enjoyable to watch. - There was lots of performance in this video which again makes it

    - The videostarts off with a short introductory story to help set the scene. - Different lighting is used throughout to link into the theme of the video. A lot of red lighting is effectively used to keep the slight horror feel as the video is set on the night before Halloween. My use of lighting is something I need to think about when making my video. - Editing: text is used throughout to describe people in a comedic way for effect. They also change the shot on the beats in the music making the video sequence and the audio connect more. This is an effective technique that I should use in my video. - A range of camera shots and angles are used throughout the video. Having a range should be something that I consider for my own music video. - There were a lot of performers in this video to make it more interesting and enjoyable to watch. However they still managed to keep the focus on the

    - Most ofthe shot changes happened on a beat in the music which connected the video sequence to the song well. I should aim to do this in my video. - All the shots have the main performer/artist featured generally in the centre of the shot to signify his importantce within the video and to keep the focus on him. This is something I should consider doing with my main performer in my own video. - Use of inventive transistions: there was a transition that involved the camera moving around and then down instead of the plain simple switch betweent shots. I should consider using a more creative

    - Although thereare a lot of performers in this music video the two main performers/ the artist stay as the main foucs throughout the whole piece as they are always front and centre wearing more stand-out outfits then everyone else. If I have multiple performers in my video this is something I should consider for the main person. - The video contains some slow-motion shots throughout which is something I could consider doing as it is a bit more complexed and creative.

FINAL IDEA –TRACK SUMMARY Song: Generation Why – Conan Gray The term 'generation why' is commonly used for people currently in their twenties who are labelled as being more selfish than the generation before them. The song explores how media portrays this selfish group who live without any clear thoughts on what they want to do in life. It also explores the struggles that they face including world issues which also relates to younger generations of today. The song is indie pop, 3:41 in length and it is fairly slow paced.

FINAL IDEA –YOUR IDEA Indie-pop music videos are usually low budget and are filmed in easily accessible places. I aim to do this to by filming around where I live, in York, the woods and other similar places which are cheap and easy to get to. I aim to use a small bit of narrative for certain parts of the song but mostly just imagery and lip syncing/playback lip-syncing. I will also film clips of buildings, driving, penny-boarding, nature and others. When editing I will apply a soft filter to the whole video as most indie-pop music videos have this. I also want to include some hand-held camera shots as this is another low budget type feature that usually looks quite effective.

TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI ON OUTLINEMyaim is to make an Indie-pop music videos. These are usually low budget and are filmed in easily accessible places. I aim to film around where I live, in York, the woods and other similar places which are cheap and easy to get to, so I stick to the low budget aspect. I aim to use a small bit of narrative for certain parts of the song but mostly just imagery and lip syncing/playback lip- syncing. I will also film clips of buildings, driving, pennyboarding, nature and others. When editing I will apply a soft filter to the whole video, most likely a soft pink tone, as most indie-pop music videos have this. The song explores how media portrays this "selfish" group known as generation why, who live without any clear thoughts on what they want to do in life. It also shortly explores the struggles that they face including world issues which also relates to younger generations of today. The song is in an indie-pop style, 3:41 in length and it is fairly slow paced. I will be needing to use a camera or a phone to film the shots. I will need a tripod to make some of the shots cleaner but will also

In a car (driving) - need to plan time to go out onto the roads – could film while on the way somewhere, need to have someone to drive – timing must be convenient for both of us. FACILITIES To edit myvideo I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro as it is provided by college and it is a professional, easy to use software. To film my video I will be using my iphone and a small tripod.

PERSONNEL I will havemy parents helping me with the filming part of this project. They can give me access to some of the places I will need to go to by driving me etc. They can help film the parts of the video that I will be the peformer in. For most of the shots I will be able to film them myself. I may need to have some friends be performers for a few shots in my video so I will need to organise a date and time to meet them in the city centre if possible. I will be the main performer of the video as it means I don’t have to rely too much on others to be available when they say they are.
  • 27.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC I will beusing a penny-board as one of the main props in the video with me both riding it and just holding it. For my costume I will just be wearing a few different or maybe just one simple nice casual outfits which keeps it low budget to fit with the indie-pop style video I am going for. The main costume I will have will be blue 'mom' jeans, white top, beige trainers and a thin beige jacket.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE Filming Day 1: Iam planning on filming for about 1 hour on Wednesday the 4th. I plan on going to Rowntrees park in York at around 11am to ensure that the park is as quiet as possible. I shall also quickly go into York City Centre to look for the best streets to film in on the second filming day. I also plan to film the short village scenes when I get back from the park on this day.

SCHEDULE Filming Day 2: Iam planning on filming for around 2 hours on Sunday the 8th. I plan on going into York City Centre at around 8am to ensure the streets are as quiet as possible. I also plan on getting a clip of the sunrise at around 7:20am the same morning/on the way into York. Later on in the day I plan on filming the sunset if possible and then the scenes for my video that need to be set at night time. Editing: I have given myself up to 7 hours for my editing so I can try and make the video as good as it can be. I will be doing this during the time that I am in college. I have given myself this length of time so my editing is not rushed and also to allow for any problems that may occur or so I have chance to tetany extra video clips if I need to.
