TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant

POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Setting a nice vibe that represents the song perfectly.
Making it visually pleasing for the majority, and adding
goo-quality camera-work and editing skills throughout.
Adding lyrics upon the bottom much like the Chase
Atlantic example on slide 10.
Show the right emotions throughout the music video, for
example if I chose the song ‘Electric Love’ I would
represent and show the love vibes throughout.
Or if I chose ‘Right Here’, I would show the edgy vibes, or
betrayal which is expressed through-out the song.
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
Lyrics
 I am choosing lyrics because I can choose fonts and text styles that
represent the vibe of the music video perfectly. Not only that, it will
make the viewer understand what the artist is saying and understand
it.
Closeup of the singer.
 I am choosing this because this would match up with the aesthetic
look I am going for.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
1. Working with different camera angles.
2. Working with different filter types post editing.
3. Filming landscapes.
4. Use of overlays to add something special into the
clips.
5. Filming of models and adding an aesthetic look in
editing.
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
1. If the model doesn’t show up.
2. Some weather types.
3. If the background is too dark, it wouldn’t be easy to
edit or see.
4. Too many skyline shots or nature shots could seem
repetitive.
5. Could be a problem if the font size of the lyrics is too
big.
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Just You And I by Tom Walker
Brief biographical background:
Tom Walker is a British singer-songwriter. He is based in
the indie-pop & indie-rock genre. He conveys himself as
a down-to-earth person in his music videos.
Links to other artists:
- James Arthur
- Sam Smith
- Lewis Capaldi
Genre info:
Indie-pop (or alt pop) is a music genre and subculture
that combines guitar pop with a DIY ethic in opposition
to the style and tone of mainstream pop music.
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
TRACK: Just You And I by Tom Walker
Summary: The meaning of this song is that it is based
upon a good relationship, or friendship that is long
distance, I assume. The song shows some long distance
with the lyrics “Staring at this screen
Been saving up for weeks now, Just to get to you, my
dear.” These words aim towards a long distance
relationship at the start. The pace of the song is quite
mediocre at the start but when the chorus kicks in it kind
of evolves into a faster pace almost. The style of the
song is pretty cliché romantic type. But there are two
styles of this song, acoustic and the normal, upbeat
remix almost type one, not really much a difference.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My idea is based upon long distance relationships and the
effects of a safe first meeting. Lots of shots of computers,
phones, skylines and some views that almost ‘separate’
the two characters in the music video. Some of the clips
will have two different weather types, which can be
edited, or shot in the correct weather type and can be
maximised by using filters or overlays. The video will kind
of be aesthetic and with mix in with the indie-pop genre
that the track holds. Use of aesthetic text within the lyric
structures at the lower half of the video will give a good
vibe to the video all whilst helping the viewer understand
what is being said. Some editing will be used to add
filters, and effects that will tie both sides of the
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
LOCATIONS
Locations I will be using is my back garden, numerous
locations by the River Ouse, and in my own home. Maybe
some in town.
Distance isn’t very far away from me, and access is okay
because it’s public grounds. Cost isn’t applicable. The
ideal weather would be clear skies on one part then
maybe drowsy, rainy weather which could be increased in
the editing.
LOCATIONS
River Ouse, left hand side. Would probably
film nearer work leaving time to ensure that
there is less people around.
City Centre, near Shambles Market. Would
probably film nearer in the evening times
shops would close, or in the morning befo
open to ensure clearer clips.
EQUIPMENT
The equipment that I would need is my phone camera, my
computer for some of the shots and a friend with their
phone or computer. Maybe I would use some own fairy
lights to spice up some of the shots and go through the
holidays almost.
FACILITIES
I will edit my video somewhat between both at home on
my computer, and at college. I will probably need to have
a practise run on Premiere Pro before I start.
PERSONNEL
Crew: Myself, I am available whenever.
Cast: I only need one external performer, and that is my
friend, Katie. She will be using the computer and the
phone in the shots, and also use her as a silhouette in
some shots. Like a silhouette looking down at their
phone by the river, or in the centre of a quiet road in
town.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Some props may include mobile phones,
laptops and maybe some string lights to
brighten up some shots in the home and
make them aesthetic. Costume is just
casual clothes.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
 Pre-visualisation and concept boards
 Storyboarding
 Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
With the picture of the
bridge, this is where one
of the shots of the music
video is going to be shot.
The second picture to the
right of it, is the
silhouette vibes that I aim
to achieve throughout
some of the scenes in the
music video. The third
picture is somewhat kind
of the shots that I am
aiming for in some of the
clips.
The whole of the middle
row is the areas in York
that I would shoot in, with
the same aesthetic filter.
The third row is some
shots that I would film on
the Backies or near Clifton
Moor. The second picture
on the third row would be
the lights vibes that I
would try to achieve in
some scenes. The 3rd
picture is again, the
silhouette vibes I would
aim for.
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
__ Verse 1 __
Let's get drunk
Let's raise a glass to a better one
Let all the things that we've overcome
Bring hope to us 'cause
Me and you, we can hold this out
Only you understand how I'm feeling now,
yeah
For the first line, maybe a shot of two
clinking together with a nature backgr
The second few, would include a few p
talking.
These ones would include a shot of fri
clinking their glasses again, but a silho
These ones would include a silhouette
male figure near the River Ouse, neare
Museum Gardens.
__ Pre-chorus __
And I know I can tell you anything
You won't judge, you're just listening, yeah
'Cause you're the best thing that ever
happened to me
This clip would include the woman silh
the same spot and position as the mal
the clip before.
This clip would include a person on th
texting on Snapchat. Or a person typin
their computer.
__ Chorus __
'Cause my darling, you and I
Could take over the world
One step at a time
Just you and I (Just you and I)
'Cause you're the only one
Who brings light just like the sun
One step at a time
Just you and I (Just you and I)
When these lyrics are sung, a clip of the w
doing her daily tasks, and a side by side v
of the male doing the same things, but w
faces cut out of the video.
Whilst these lyrics are sung, the female an
are walking down the same road, the fem
being near the River Ouse, and the male d
a wooded area near my home.
These scenes would repeat on the chorus
different tasks that they do.
__ Verse 2 __
Let's get drunk
Reminisce about the days
We were broke, not getting paid
And taking trips on the weekend
When I would drive down to see ya
And we would paint the town
Too many shots, I'll be passing out
'Cause I can never keep up
Quad vods, now I'm puking up
When these lyrics play, a clip of a woman
drinking would show and upon the opposite side
of her, the male doing the same thing, gradually
getting closer.
When these lyrics are sung, it changes to the pair
running, with the same different backgrounds from
the chorus.
When these lyrics are sung the same clips from the
beginning of the verse will be used but in a more
fast paced motion.
When these lyrics are sung, clips of a
girl on her phone and a male on his
computer is shown, typing a message
to one another.
When these lyrics are sung, clips of
inserting money into a money box or
piggy bank is shown on both sides, the
male and female.
When these lyrics are played, a shot of
a person looking at google maps is
played, estimating the distance
between the pair.
With this lyric, a shot of the city centre
will be displayed, almost like spinning
around.
When this lyric is sung, the video of the
pair running kind of merges together,
the background changing with each
step.
__ Verse 3 __
Tired of chasing paper
Staring at this screen
Been saving up for weeks now
Just to get to you, my dear
And though you're far from my home
This ain't no weekend bar
Oh, my heart grows fonder
Must be city love
__ Chorus __
'Cause my darling, you and I
Could take over the world
One step at a time
Just you and I
'Cause my darling, you and I
Could take over the world
One step at a time
Just you and I (Just you and I)
'Cause you're the only one
Who brings light just like the
sun
One step at a time
The end
These two clips combine

When this lyric is sung, the video of the pair running kind of merges together, the background changing with each step. __ Verse 3 __ Tired of chasing paper Staring at this screen Been saving up for weeks now Just to get to you, my dear And though you're far from my home This ain't no weekend bar Oh, my heart grows fonder Must be city love __ Chorus __ 'Cause my darling, you and I Could take over the world One step at a time Just you and I 'Cause my darling, you and I Could take over the world One step at a time Just you and I (Just you and I) 'Cause you're the only one Who brings light just like the sun One step at a time
