This document analyzes and makes inferences about several musical artists based solely on images of them. For the band The 1975, the black and white photo suggests an indie or rock band. Years & Years is analyzed next; the colored lighting of their faces implies electronic music. Solo artist Tom Odell is pictured in dull lighting, suggesting indie or indie pop music. James Bay stands in nature, implying his music could be uplifting and meaningful. Finally, the casual photo of Disclosure, two brothers messing around, implies their electronic music is less serious.

The band above is called ‘The 1975’ I have chosen the above picture to analyse. IfI didn’t know whothisbandwas and
the type of music theyproduce, I couldhave takena guessjust fromlooking at pictures of them, such as the one above.
The fact that the image is in black and white for a start alreadysuggests that theymaybe a popband, straight away by
looking at their darkishclothes, tattoos andfacial hair etc, I would thinkthat theyare part of a rock / indie band as they
look quite roughand rebellious. This couldbe stereotypical of an indie band;however the picture alone gives off this
idea that theyare this stereotypical indie rock band. Not onlythis, but their bodylanguage andfacial expressions also
helpto suggest theyare members of an indie band. Onlytwo ofthe members are givingtheir audiences direct modes
of address, the other two are looking awayfromthe camera. This gives me the impression that they aren’t being
serious, even though they may seem it, their music can be very mixe d.
Years and Years are a British electronica trio and without listening to their music, the image above gives offthis kind of
genre of music. First of all, the whole of the image is incolour;however, the colour isn’t just naturallighting, there has
been some special lighting put on theminorder to give off this impressionthat their faces are half pink and half blue.
This couldalsolinkinwiththe type of music theyproduce, as withit beingelectronica it is verycomputerised, quite like
the image above. Eachone of the members is givingdirect mode of address;however, there is one member of the band
that is placedinfront of the other two. Thistellsme that the personwhois stoodinfront is probablya main singer or
member of this band. He has beenplacedina wayfor this phototo be takensothat audiences willfocus more on him
rather than the other two males presented.

Unlike the above, this artist is a solo artist rather thana member in a band. I know this straight away as he is the only
person featured inthe image. Fromlooking at this image, I couldsuggest that the singer Tom Odell produces music that
is quite indie / indie pop. I can guess thisas I cancompare hispicture to those of popsingers or rock singers and I can
see there are a few differences. For example, the lighting inthe backgroundis quite dullanddark, which although may
create a dark mood, it allows audiences to focus onthe personin the middle, as he is more lit up, almost like a ha lo
effect. Also, the clothes he hason are dark and theyare quite covering, his fingers are nearl y fully covered by his
sleeves, as well, his hair isn’t neatly kept back and he seems free.
Again, this image is ofa solo artist namedJames Baywhois anindie pop/alternative music artist. In this photo, the
artist is giving indirect mode of address, as he looks like he is looking at something else other than the camera. This
gives me the impressionthat he isn’t serious about the camera and that it maynot be a big deal to him. He is wearing
quite casualclothes, with longhair anda tophat. He doesn’t looklike a typical pop singer andthisimage gives the idea
that he isn’t away. Not onlythis, but the settingsuggests something about the personhe is andthe music he produces.
He looks like he is stoodupsomewhere high inthe outdoors, suchas the countyside, rather than in a busy industry
such as New York or London. This makesme thinkthat he is maybe hadhisphototaken inthe place he was brought up
and it helps me to identifythat he couldbe from Britain as there is a lot of greenery. This alsogives me the impression
that his music could be quite uplifting and meaningful.

Disclosure are another Britishelectronica duo, however theyare bothbrothers. Their music genre consists of Deep
House, UKgarage andSynthpopetc. Again, I canclearlytell fromlooking at the photo above that these artists don’t
produce popmusic or evenrock music. Theyboth seem quite young and fun; theyare lookingat one another and are
messing around onthe picture, like brothers would dorather thanbeing serious. They are placed in front of a blank
screenandthe photohas an effect onit that is a little bit lighter thanblackand white, it seems quite grey. They are
both wearing casual clothes that manyboys aroundtheir ages would wear, such as the Adidas brand. What is different
about these compared to the rest above is that bothof their faci al features are almost hidden by what looks like
drawings. This again couldsuggest that the artists are less serious than others or it couldmeansomething different to
do with their music.
