This document analyzes and summarizes the album covers and promotional materials for two albums: Oh Wonder's "Ultralife" and Paramore's "After Laughter". For Oh Wonder's album, the clear text and bright colors are meant to represent the clean, bright sound of the album. The brighter text stands out to draw attention. For Paramore's album, more space is given to listing songs rather than the title, as the band is more established. The art relates to the album's themes of breaking from a relationship. The cleaner font and pink color represent the album's 80s new wave style and female perspective. The covers aim to attract their target youth audiences while mixed reactions may come from those outside the target

1. Digipack and Advert Research
Oh Wonder - Ultralife
First of all the, clear, white text of the text illustrates the clean sound of the band, with their
synths and soft vocals. The name of the album is far brighter than the rest of the text, to
draw attention to a fan that this is something new. The bright background attracts attention
and conveys the attitude of the album, which is bright and cheerful. The advert also contains
the album cover within it, so people know what to look for in the shops or on their preferred
music streaming/buying service. The title of the album itself gives the impression that it will
improve your life and make it `ultra`. The colour and font of the brighter text matches the text
on the cover, presenting a synergy.
The picture on the album cover shows us the artists, which are mainly the target
demographic for the music also, male and females in their 20’s. The black and white jumpers
and black tops match the style of the cover. The blue accent label in the bottom right hand
corner adds some colour to the cover drawing in more attention apart from the unusual
photo and style.
I think that someone from a different target demographic would be intrigued by the poster as
it not too obvious what the genre is. While someone may be put off by, for example a
suggestive photo of a female artist, there are no parts of the poster that could really offend
someone.

2. Paramore - After Laughter
This poster is of a very different style to the one above. As the band is fairly established, but
not too famous, it is primarily based on pre-recognition. The album title doesn’t take centre
stage, though that may be due to the fact that there is no titular son. Instead lots of space is
dedicated to listing all the songs on the album, and large font used to reiterate the names of
the singles from the album. These two songs are the most likely to be played by radios or
put on playlists, to they are the most prominent. The album itself is very cathartic about
breaking out of a relationship, so perspective art on the centre of the cover is very fitting.
Each item on the cover and poster relates to one or more of the songs on the album, tying
everything together.
Previously the font the band used a lot was very scruffy and they were mainly rock based,
but now they have gone with an 80’s new wave style and are indie pop based the font has
become much cleaner. The pink colour of the album mostly comes from the fact that all the
songs are told from a female perspective. Although having an 80’s aesthetic the cover and
poster aim at a youth audience and has a bright look, just like the album.
I think that to anyone who isn’t the target demographic there will be mixed reactions. As pop
is one of the biggest genres at the moment, a large amount of people may realise the album
is pop through the song titles and the art style and make their own decision on whether to

3. buy it. However anyone who is not a fan of the pop genre or it’s many variations may be put
off, as this album is distinctly pop from the cover, and doesn’t really cross into any other
genres.
