In this project I shall CD Covers are very important. They advertise the band whichcreates them, they show how a band represents themselves andmost importantly, they show themusic that is on the album. In this presentation, I shall showwhat some bands are trying to represent with their Album Art and I shall attempt to create onemyself with Photoshop.
MOODBOARDAs can be seen, my moodboard mainlyconsists of Pop, Korean Pop andAlternative band covers.I picked these artistsmainly due to the use of colour or artwork on their CD covers.I like the use of colour on Album art as it really pops out and looks a lot better than something simple and dark.
4Minute – For Muzik4minute is a South Korean girl group created by JYP Entertainment's sister label Cube Entertainment. The members of the group include (From the Left):HyunASo HyunJi YunGa YunJi HyunThis is 4Minute’s first album and Album Art, though they have many similarPromotional pictures.
4Minute – For MuzikRepresentation4Minute are blatantly a pop groupand this is shown on the cover withthe bright colours and the overall image of the band. The clothing is fashionable and bright which stands out and shows that the band are stylish and funky, which appeals to most audiences. The girls are posed in a lying down position, in tight clothes and high heels, and the posing and outfits are both ‘girly’ and provocative, the first obviously appealing to the female audience and the latter to the male audience. Also, the way the girls are very close and touching suggests sisterhood and friendship in the group which makes them seem friendly and approachable to the audience and it appeals to fans as most like the idea that the members like each other and aren’t just pretending to for the sake of the audience. The fact that the band are the biggest element on the cover suggests that the members (and their image) is the most important aspect of this band, and it perhaps suggests that this band is not necessarily about the music and more about the style (though that may not be the case). This CD cover’s overall image definitely ties in with 4Minute’s self-proclaimed style of ‘Candy Funk’ and most definitely represents a Pop music band.
Mika – Life in Cartoon MotionMika is a singer/songwriter who rose to fame in 2007.He is famous for his unusual singing voice and his flamboyantstyle.Mika has released two successfulalbums and has won 4 awards, and has been nominated for 11 awards for his music..
Mika – Life in Cartoon MotionRepresentationMika’s music style is most definitelyalternative and this is shown withthe contemporary artwork used on his Album cover. I think Mika chose this style for his cover for many reasons. Firstly, it is colourful and really jumps out at you so it would be easy to spot on a shop shelf, secondly, the pictures represent his music which is colourful and different to other music and thirdly, it seems to represent Mika himself as a person, bright, happy and colourful.Mika does appear on the cover but is portrayed rather differently to therest of the cover as he is in Sepia whereas the rest of the cover is fullof bold colours. The designer perhaps wants the viewer to look at the artwork rather than the artist which suggest that Mika himself would rather the audience concentrate on his music rather than his image. This CD Cover’s image definitely ties in with the music that is on it and shows an alternative and fun style, which I think was the aim.
E.L.O – Out of the BlueElectric Lights Orchestra (otherwise know as ELO) were a ‘Symphonic Rock Group’’ from Birmingham. They were internationally famous and successful and sold over 100 Million Records worldwide. The band have broken up and reformed a few times, the most recently being 2001. The band’s (rather large) line-up included:Jeff Lynne (1970–1986, 2000–01)Roy Wood (1970–1972)Bev Bevan (1970–1986)Richard Tandy (1972–1986, 2000–01)Kelly Groucutt (1975–1983)Mik Kaminski (1973–1979, 1983)Hugh McDowell (1973–1979)Melvyn Gale (1975–1979)Mike Edwards (1972–1974)Mike de Albuquerque (1972–1974)Wilfred Gibson (1972–1973)Colin Walker (1972–1973)Bill Hunt (1970–1972)Steve Woolam (1970–1971)Louis Clark (1974–1979, 1983)Mack (1975–1981, 1986)Bill Bottrell (1981, 1983, 1986)Marc Mann (2000–01)ELO is still quite well known today And still continue to sell singles andAlbums.
E.L.O – Out of the BlueRepresentationELO’s overall sound is very futuristicand I think this cover represents that very well. The cover features a Spaceship with theband’s logo on it, it is also brightly lit with bold colours. I think this overall image is there to represent the band and their name rather than their image. The fact that the band are not featured on this cover suggests that the music is the main priority of this album rather than the image. However, when this album was released, the band had become very popular internationally, so perhaps the fact that the band do not feature on this cover is because they are so well known that you only have to see the logo to know who the band are.I think this album cover represents the music on the album very well, the music itself is upbeat and futuristic for it’s time which I think is reflected very well by the cover art.
