The Overcoat Literary Analysis
In the short story The Overcoat, Nikolai Gogol satirizes government bureaucracy and illustrates the
ridiculousness of government figures. In the story, a ninth class clerk named Akaky has a new
overcoat stolen from him, and when he goes to the government for help, he is met with disdain that
eventually causes him to fall ill and die. Through the literary devices of tone, point of view, and
characterization, Gogol makes mockery of social classes and the government.
In the story, Gogol uses a humorous tone to satirize government officials. Although the subject matter
is very serious with Akaky s poor lifestyle on top of the crime he has fallen victim to, Gogol uses
humor to illustrate the silliness of government officials. One prime example ... Show more content on

He does this by telling the story in third person omniscient, and emphasizing the silliness of the
government s mindset by entering it, while also showing Akaky s shock to the ridiculous actions of
government officials. An example of this is the conversation between the important personage and
Akaky over the crime of his stolen overcoat. When Akaky first enters the office of the important
personage, the important personage is said to have spoken with a hard sharp voice, that he has
practiced at home in front of a mirror, before taking the job. Although it is shown to the audience that
the harsh disposition of the important personage is a farce, Akaky can not see this. Gogol then flips to
his perspective, where Akaky is attempting to control his tongue because he is so scared. After the
important personage attempts to establish himself as superior, Akaky has to be taken out of the office,
where he is almost unconscious. The perspective then flips back to the important personage, who is
pleased at the dramatic effect that he had created. Gogol uses this third person omniscient point of
view in order to show not only the sham of the self important government officials, but also to
illustrate its disastrous effect on the lower class. By looking at the situation from

The United States Army And Selective Service Essay
The most hardworking people are usually the least recognized. They are generally the least paid as
well. There must be some sort of incentive for them to continually work so hard. The United States
Army has been the underdogs of the military branch. The United States Army is probably the hardest
working branch of the military, but also the least sought after. To the general public they are not
considered to be at the top of the spectrum amongst the other branches of military. The government
has helped in creating a bias within the branches of military by making the standards to get into the
military so low compared to some of the other branches. The Army should be considered the People s
Army. There is a pivotal point in life where as a man must enroll in the selective service. That is a
really scary point in life because it seems like there is a chance to be selected in the military by draft.
There is also entrance in the military by choice. There is a percentage of Americans that willingly
enter into the military coming straight out of high school. Those Americans that willingly want to join
the military are required to take a test called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or
ASVAB as it is most commonly called. That test acts as an entrance exam to every branch of the
military, as well as what jobs you qualify for once you pick a branch. The every year Americans shoot
to make the highest score possible in order to be apart of the more sought after branches

The Pros And Cons Of Legal Malpractice Case
It is noted that when a company fails to meet its obligations management, employees, suppliers and
customers, which is open to legal malpractice claims. The defence against malpractice lawsuits can be
costly for companies, and even if they win, your reputation could be damaged. Entrepreneurs have to
understand what actions constitute negligence, criminal sanctions for negligence and how to protect
themselves from malpractice lawsuits . The law defines negligence as the failure of a person or
company to practice the level of care that a rational, sane person had practiced under the same
conditions. When the lack of preparation or foresight leads to damage, the plaintiff may claim the
company was negligent and sue for monetary damages. The harm can come in the form of physical
pain, emotional suffering, economic loss, or a combination of the three . The plaintiffs must prove five
elements to win a malpractice case against a business. Applicants must demonstrate that the company
had a legal obligation to them and breached that duty. They have to prove that the damage would not
have occurred were it not for the actions of the company. Applicants must demonstrate that the
company should have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Social Comparison Theory
The social comparison theory offers some level of explanation for how media images actually come to
impact the way women feel about their bodies. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves in
relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that people
compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to them.
Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being either or
better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual compares
himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. In contrast,
downward comparisons involve a person comparing himself or herself to ... Show more content on

Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of
references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to which
women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most women to
achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall short of
standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women, it is
difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, you re not good enough.
The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid evaluating
themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies that target
women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images, in order to
motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet products, makeup,
hair products). If women see a discrepancy between themselves and the images they view in
advertisements (which the almost definitely will), they will be more inclined to buy the products that
are advertised (Thompson Coovert,

Pros And Cons Of Mandatory National Service
The topic of mandatory national service has been around for years now, and there will always be
arguments on whether it should be enforced or not. Some may say that it takes away our freedom, but
is it not what gives us freedom in the first place? The United States military, national service, as well
as community service is based on volunteers. That is what makes this country great, but there are less
volunteers as years go by. Crime increases, streets are not safe anymore, Americans are oblivious to
what is happening around the world. There are so many opportunities to give back to the country, yet,
not many care. Today s generation is based on social trends, and self gratification. There is also the
fact that many young people do not know what to do with their life after high school, some continue to
college or focus on work, others do not work nor study. Therefore, all young men and women should
be required to give two years to national service because it can help solve problems as well as build
the community back together.
Having mandatory national service implies that every young person between ages 18 through 25 will
be required to give back to the country through some type of national service. This includes the
Military, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other nonprofit organizations. It does not necessarily involve
preparing for combat, nor risking a life, but helping those in need, making the world a better place by
taking care of the environment. Everyone should have the obligation to serve. John F. Kennedy ones
said, A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have
what it takes to make a living. Today s military rejects include tomorrows hard core unemployed.
Meaning that national service is something every citizen should be a part of. After all, it provides
young adults with strength and pride of their country, as well as training in the career they are leaning
towards. (Kennedy)
Today s generation think it is okay to treat others with disrespect, and sadly many parents have no
recourse to that kind of behavior. These can be signs to lack of attention. Service activities can help
with emotions and behaviors, ensuring success in people s future. After high

The Jewish Passover
What is the greatest gift one can receive? Most would say it is money, or clothes, or even a 50 dollar
gift card to Starbucks. But what is it really? Sometimes we don t really realize that that we receive
gifts every day, but the ones on special occasions like Christmas or Easter. That is why the greatest gift
anyone can receive is food since it s culturally important, not everyone has it, and we can t live
without it.
Food is culturally is important because many cultures indulge in making lavish foods for special
occasions from great feasts in American and Islamic countries, to the treats served for Indian special
occasions. Food can also be symbolic. When thinking symbolically about food The Jewish Passover

The Pros and Cons of Ethanol as a Renewable Source of Energy
I. Introduction
One of the most hotly contested debates in today s realm of environmental concern is how to secure
energy for the maintenance and improvement of quality of life in the future. To date, humanity has
been blessed with plentiful reserves of cheap crude oil, which can be refined into a multitude of items
that make the lives of many so convenient gasoline, heating oil, natural gas, plastics, and fertilizers. In
some parts of the world, these technologies merely facilitate survival. But concern over what happens
when these supplies dwindle is universal. Science has revealed that oil will not last forever at the rate
it is being consumed. Therefore, alternatives must be developed that can provide sustainable ... Show

Fossil fuel consumption in the United States is colossal. In Colorado, the average household uses 70
million Btu of energy from natural gas and 150 million Btu from gasoline in 2000. (Energy
Information Administration) That s around 1,320 gallons of gas per household, per year. (US EPA) In
that same year, multiply that by Colorado s 1,658,238 households (US Census Bureau) and find that
the state s residential sector consumed around 2,188,874,160 gallons of gas at the turn of the century.
Per capita, Colorado ranks just 36th amongst the states in energy consumption. (Energy Information
Administration)
This does not begin to tell the whole story. On the whole, keeping with Colorado as an example, we in
this state used 1.35 quadrillion Btu of energy in 2003, about 1.4% of the U.S. 98.6 quadrillion Btu,
with just over 2% coming from renewable sources. Also in 2003, the world was calculated as using
about 421 quadrillion Btu of energy (around 6% coming from renewables). (EIA Energy Outlook) The
U.S. produces less than a fifth of this. (USGS) Ever hear someone throw out that statistic that
America, with just under 5% of the world s population, uses around one fourth of the world s energy?
It s true. Translation: the U.S. is horrifyingly vulnerable to a shut off of foreign oil supplies.
As petroleum supplies inevitably dwindle, renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydrothermal,
and biofuel

Toxic Leader Analysis
The purpose of this essay is to identify what happened when my ODA worked for a toxic company
commander in Afghanistan. I will compare and contrast the differences between good leaders vs. toxic
leaders, how toxic leaders develop, and share personal experiences on how our ODA dealt with our
company commander. Leadership style is the pattern of behavior used by a leader as recognized by
those who are led. Good leaders add value, impart energy and maximize potential. However, some
leaders, by virtue of their personality and style consume unit energy. Even high performing
organizations can be run into the ground. Toxic leaders have a style that is so destructive that they not
only do not add value, they are a detriment to their organizations.

Women s National Basketball Association Essay
The Women s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a
professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The league
was founded in 1996 but didn t officially kick off until 1997. While it s not the first major women s
professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has received full
backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in its 20th season
under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played from June to
September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the middle of October.
Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few discrepancies between the two
leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA games, the players of the WNBA
deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game more challenging, players continue to
show their hard work in the offseason by playing overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing
for charities as a result of their work. There is the idea that the WNBA is less exciting than the NBA
due to the lack of dunking. The dunk, or the alley oop (lob to the dunk) has become an intricate part of
the men s game but it is not so often used in the woman s. While the average NBA player stands at
about 6 3 , the average WNBA player is only about 5 10 . With this in mind, almost every single NBA
player is able to

1923 in New York, New York and died on September 29, 1997 at the age of 73. Lichtenstein graduated
from Benjamin Franklin High School in New York City and went on to graduate with his Bachelor s
Degree in Fine Arts in 1946 at Ohio State University. Three years later he received his Master s
Degree in Fine Arts as well from Ohio State University. From there he taught at Ohio State University

This painting was before Lichtenstein began his pop art works, which you can tell the difference if you
compare Look Mickey and Drowning Girl. These two paintings are very different Look Mickey looks
like a beginner s process and Drowning Girl looks more professional. Lichtenstein borrowed the
original image from a Donald Duck story book that showed Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck standing
on a dock fishing. Lichtenstein made alterations to the original image such as changing the shades of
the original colors and added more realistic humor. In the original image you see the Mickey and
Donald that everyone knows and loves having a good laugh, but in Lichtenstein you see more humor
and happiness in Donald s eyes. Donald and Mickey s happiness rubs off on you because you can feel
that whatever is going on is supposed to be funny and it is supposed to make you burst out into
laughter almost as if you were right there with them. Lichtenstein added a text to it, Look Mickey, I ve
hooked a big one!! The text gives more insight to what is going on in the picture because now our
imaginations have something else to create an image to see what will happen next. Lichtenstein
focused on Donald and Mickey and rotated the dock making it look sideways rather than at the end
and at the same time he was able to keep them in almost the same positions. He was able to position
Donald s body differently as well and his fishing rod to make it balance better. Donald is leaning
further into the water and Mickey is less and Mickey is blushing more because of how much he s
laughing rather than how he originally looked in comparison to the original

Mayan Economy Research Paper
Mayan economy was largely based on food and agriculture. For most Mayans, farming was the main
labor resource, this job was dominated by men. Mayans would also work everyday in order to support
their families. It is important to know that one farmer did not own all of a piece of land, as farming
was communal. It is also crucial to know that no money was used in Mayan economics. Farmers were
required to give portions of crops to the government as a form of tax. Other items used to pay this tax
were salt, cloth, honey, fruit and sometimes domestic animals. These items were also used in bartering
and paying for certain things one would need. In Ancient Maya agriculture was the basic form of
economy. The second form of agriculture was raising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each city state had their own military as it was hard to create an Mayan empire due the limitations of
food and transportation. According to archaeologists as the Classic Collapse time period came closer,
wars became more intense. Wars would commonly happen among separate kingdoms and there would
be revolts against the capitals of each Mayan city. Mayan wars were led by kings also known as Ahau.
In war, nobles were high ranking military leaders. The larger cities states in Maya had well trained
armies who were always ready to attack and be on the defensive side. When one city would be
attacked by another it was for the reason to capture high ranking prisoners to use in their sacrifice.
Also bigger cities would attack smaller cities to dominate them. Important military conquest include
the battle between Calakmul and Tikal during the fifth and sixth century. Both these city states were
powerful and dominant economically, through their military and politically. After Calakmul defeated
Tikal, Tikal took a long time to regain its former high status of the city it used to be. Calakmul
continued to dominate other cities thus continuing to destroy the cities. Some cities were never able to
recover, such as Dos Pilas and Aguateca. As the decline of the Mayan civilization began, the military
downfall proceeded. From 700 to 900 A.D.

The Primary Causes Of Electronic Waste
Electronic Waste
How often do individuals change your electronic equipment? Does anyone know where used
electronic merchandise go to? Electronic waste is called an E waste that has been becoming a serious
issue all over the world. People should be concerned in this century because E waste contains
hazardous, toxic ingredients which have adverse effects on society Toxic chemicals in electronics
products can leach into the land over time or are released into the atmosphere, impacting nearby
communities and the environment ( Where ). Young people are not aware of the caveat that used
electronic products to bring. E waste causes not only the environmental problems such as air and
water pollution but also health problems. An amount of E waste has been increasing rapidly.
Moreover, it has even been turning the land into substantial electronic landfill mountains. Three
primary reasons for electronic waste: waste is the accelerated development of science and technology,
increasing world population and over consumption.
The first primary cause of the E waste is the accelerated development of science and technology.
Acceleration can be measured in the returns of the technology such as speed, efficiency, price
performance, and overall power which improve exponentially too ( Technology ). The last 20 years
have notably changed in many aspects because of the technological innovation, and modern society is

Language Acquisition And Learning Of Linguistics
On the contrary, teachers may leave University with extensive theoretical knowledge about linguistics
but it can be sometimes seem far removed from the real concrete situations they face in the field; and
just one practical case they have to deal with may give them more insight into a problem and its
solutions than any amount of theoretical understanding. In this sense, it is noteworthy that much of
linguistics today is corpus based. Which means that the theories actually come from studying real
world texts and are therefore founded in practical experience. A language teacher can build on
linguistics research trough their own experience to improve their teaching ability. Within this context,
a teacher gaining knowledge from practice will have real samples on how language is used by their
students regarding language acquisition and learning; so they will be able to base their investigations
on them. The more practice teachers have the wider learners corpora will be there for the development
of this technique, allowing them to detect and recognise the most frequent uses and structures with a
view to introduce them in the curriculum. (Gries, S, 2009)
Regarding content and methodology of subjects, which are a very important part and require reflection
and prior design, there are significant advantages University learning can bring. With prior academic
learning teachers will doubtlessly have a much clearer idea of sequencing and segmenting the content
by using different

The Importance Of A Parliamentary System For The Nation Of...
The people of Bigmessia in order to move from the past, to shift forward for the present, and preserve
a better future for our upcoming generations do declare and affirm this Constitution for the nation of
Bigmessia.
The nation of Bigmessia will work better with a parliamentary system due to two aspects: the
international success of parliamentarism and the history of Bigmessia. The flexibility of a
parliamentary system provides the best method for managing such a diverse nation (Linz, 61). There
are too many issues and interests in Bigmessia in which having one strong executive can be very
detrimental and problematic. The plethora of peoples and issues require a legislating body or leader to
have careful deliberation and coalition building that only a parliamentary system can provide. The last
thing Bigmessia needs is more polarization (more likely to come with presidentalism).
In a country with ethnic, economic and religious divides, there needs to be a leader that can be a
unifying symbol for the majority of Bigmessia. Thus, this neutral figure can provide moral ballast in a
crisis or act as a moderator between the prime minister and his opponents (Linz, 61). The president
will be elected by the entire country and requires a majority of 60% to win. If there is no majority,
then the top two candidates will move into a run off election. This percentage ensures that the people
have to vote for someone that most people admire or respect, since even if the Christian

The Heroism Of The Valor Games Midwest
The Contest that was years in the making.
Unimaginable pain ran thru my hand, a few seconds later I passed out. I had been shot thru my left

many things from me. The hardest trial I would endure was to regain my range of motion and ability
to lift weights. Weight lifting is one of the few sports that I love to do and have done since I was a

It was surreal to say the least. I was completely over whelmed with emotion and fear all at the same
time. I had a little boo boo on the wrist and some of these heroes were missing limbs, or scared, would
they accept me as one of their own or would I be an outcast. Only time would tell.
The contest would last 3 days. 3 days, 3 different events, 3 locations around Chicago. I had been
training for months to compete. I would participate in the Shot Put, Archery and Powerlifting (Bench

o acquiring LG Laptops (option 3.4.) would lead to a small increase, as LG is not one of the big laptop
producers. o expanding in the non PC area via smartphones (option 3.5.) would not do anything for
the current market share, as we would be talking about a different market segment altogether.
It provides quick and extensive access to a large distribution network of retail and corporate
customers, lowering distribution costs (the same goes for option 3.3., which also brings Lenovo
contact with IBM s network) o option 3.2. keeps Lenovo isolated in the home market o option 3.4.

division. o option 3.5. might mean a possibly large network, but, as it is in another production sector,
so it could not be easily coupled with Lenovo s existing one.
It provides the possibility of brand capitalization, in the sense that Lenovo would take advantage of
the reputation and customer base of IBM and incorporate them through the acquisition, lowering
marketing costs o in the case of a merger, the brand name would be probably shared for the whole
duration of the partnership. o under options 3.4. and 3.5., as said before, LG is not a brand name in IT

Why Do We Need Effective Classroom Management
Teachers often wonder how to execute the ideal lesson, what structure should they adopt and how to
ensure that all their students cooperate. What we need to recognise is what classroom management is
and how much does student behavior factor? Why is it significant? What strategies does my mentor
use to establish classroom management within the class? If we know the behaviour of our students,
what do we need to do to ensure that effective classroom management is successfully acquired? All
these questions need to be answered as they all link towards a successful lesson and student
cooperation.
During my two weeks of placement, I was placed at St Albans Primary School in a prep class.
Considering that these students are at a young age, they are in a position where they are still
developing skills and are in the process of becoming mature, therefore classroom management is
crucial. In the class that I was in, students would often cause trouble with other members of the class,
they are easily distracted and overall difficult to handle. Being that I am a pre service teacher, they
often took advantage of me while I conducted the class, they would do the events explained above,
and this is due to the lack of classroom management and my ability to maintain student behaviour.
This led to students not understanding the task at hand and the overall focus of the lesson was not
acquired. It is crucial that classroom management is maintained, without a theoretical approach to

It was released in the year 1993, covering the period of the Chinese social upheavals between the
1920s through to the 1970s in the setting of the Beijing Opera. The film raises the attitude of
homosexuality in the most painful period of the traditional Chinese history, for the Chinese and
Western viewers (Lau 1995, 22). Despite that, China holds a strong homosexual stigma within the
twentieth century. According to Lau, this film was an opportunity to stimulate the inherent of the
Beijing Opera in relation to the homosexual practices that were tolerated during the era (Lau 1995,

the historical and political brutality in Chinese history (Zhang 1999, 101). The film attempts to
illustrate that the Chinese cultural connections and homosexuality cannot coexist. The main
protagonist, Cheng Dieyi, sense of identity is heavily reinforced by the power structure within the

finger and getting a pipe forced into the mouth are indications of homosexuality (Lau 1995, 23).

Belize Logistics Essay
The history of Belize dates back thousands of years. The official name of the territory was changed
from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973.
The current government of Belize took form when they declared their independence in 1981. This
government is headed by the Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, who is acting head of
state. The Queen is represented by a Governor General due to her having to reside in Great Britain.
The Governor General is the true authority in power; however, he does not officially run the
government that is led by the Prime Minister and his cabinet. Currently in the Senate there are 12
members, plus the President of the Senate. The Governor General appoints 6 senators on advice of the

Although they are rare and low risk to most visitors and residents, there are cases of Cholera, Typhoid
Rabies and Malaria within Belize. As of 2009, nearly 5000 people within Belize s adult population

poses as a threat to health while in Belize as well because there are many poisonous plants and

Big picture questions
1. The thing that motivated and sustained the long distance commerce of the Silk Roads, Sea Roads,
and Sand Roads was the desire of elites for hard to find luxury items from distant parts of the Eurasian
network, as well as the accumulation of wealth, especially among merchants who participated in the
trade.
2. The people of the Eastern Hemisphere developed long distance trade more extensively than did the
societies of the Western Hemisphere becuase the Western Hemisphere did not develop the extensive

Fresh Off The Boat Analysis
Fresh off the boat was created by Nahnatchka Khan. It is a comedy series starring Ranall Park,
Constance Wu, and Hidson Yang. This show is the first Asian American family Television show. There
are a total of 30 episodes which is 2 seasons. The show was a huge hit that it got nominated as Young
Artist Award and won. In the first episode Fresh off the boat we were introduced to a Chinese family
that moves to suburban Orlando. It centers on the father who is obsessed with all things American, a
mother who is bewildered by a white culture and a hip hop loving son (Eddie). In the beginning we
get a glimpse of how the family feels about moving to Orlando. The mother is completely against it
and the children are worried about fitting in. The father on the other hand is excited about opening his
American Restaurant; that is the reason they moved in the first place. In the few days the family
moved, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mother had to fit in with the white women in her neighborhood and had to be engaged with their
daily routines. Eddie had problems of his own; the kids at his school did not understand why Eddie ate
a nasty lunch and that caused Eddie to beg his mom to buy him American food so he can take it to
lunch. The only one in the family who did not have troubles was the younger son who found a
girlfriend on his first day at school. The show is something new I have not seen. It makes me realize
of how different an American culture is to other foreigners. We are custom to this culture we do not
see how other people have to struggle. The first episode in my opinion felt discrimination towards the
Chinese family, because of how they had to change the way they lived just to fit in. Sometimes we are
not aware of how other people that just moved to America have to go through and we expect them to
already learn, and change their way just so we can be pleased. Overall the show was funny and

Summary Of The Song Landslide
Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac, is written to show how the removal of a loved one can impact someone
s life negatively or positively. The theme of the song can be found in several lyric such as, Well, I ve
been afraid of changin, cause I ve built my life around you (Fleetwood Mac). It is said that if a couple
thinks that their relationship is not going to work out, it can tumble over at any time. The effects of
shouting out and going for help may seem like a good idea, but it will just bring down the avalanche
right on top of the situation and collapse everything in. In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie
experiences a loss of a close friend (Michael) to a suicide. Charlie has the idea of coping with this
death by writing in letters to his unnamed friend and this is a reason why this is on the mixtape. ...

This song represents the feeling of emptiness throughout life. Through all of Kurt Cobain s life, it was
mostly empty. People are searching for the theme, and that can be found in the lyrics, With the lights
out, it s less dangerous, / Here we are now; entertain us, / I feel stupid and contagious (Nirvana). It is
said that these lyrics show the security and satisfaction after shooting up with heroin. The idea of
drugs and sex is messed up but nothing can entertain a group of young teens. People are trying to
introduce this idea of heroin as an idea that is better than sex, which is almost all that someone can say
after shooting up too many times. Charlie soon finds the lifestyle inside highschool of drug parties,
drama, and nighttime adventures. Charlie is dipped into the 90s music era and this helps cope with
problems that may occur later throughout the

Ethical Issues Essays
Ethical Issues
Autonomy The ideal of self determination is the basis for autonomy. It is important that a patient be
allowed to decide what should be done to his or her own body. In other words, nobody else has the
right to assert their power over another. Likewise, a physician should be allowed to decide not to
perform a procedure if doing so would conflict with his or her values. In the Cruzan case, Nancy s
autonomy by way of her parents substituted judgment was overridden in favor of the State of Missouri
s policy to preserve life. Although the Supreme Court did not deny that Nancy had the right to refuse
nutrition/hydration, there was not enough clear and convincing evidence to know that refusal was
what Nancy truly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The State did not actually contest Nancy s right to refuse treatment. The State wanted to make
absolutely certain that there was a standard of evidence available to protect the patient in the case that
the surrogates were not acting on behalf of the patient s wishes. Furthermore, disrespecting Nancy s
autonomy would have done more harm than good to the profession of medicine. Patients want
reassurance that the physician will not override their decisions in an act of paternalism (as well
intended as the physician may be). Lastly, the physician may have a conflict with withdrawing
treatment, but he or she must distinguish the difference between withholding a desired treatment
versus withdrawing a treatment that is unwanted.
Competency When discussing ethical issues concerning health care, competency refers not only to the
ability of a patient to make a decision, but also to the ability of the patient to understand that decision.
Included in comprehending the decision is also the patients understanding the consequences of his or
her decision on both oneself and others. The determination of patient competency is not measured on
any standard scale, but rather a common sense determination made by the physician. In order to make
that determination, the physician must realize that the patient need not understand necessarily how the
treatment works, but rather the consequences of accepting various treatments or refusing

How Does Baldwin Use Darkness In Sonny s Blues
James Baldwin s Sonny Blues is a look behind the curtain, revealing the honest life that African
Americans endeavor and the obstacles their community faced in Harlem during the 1950s. Baldwin
writes Sonny s Blues from the perspective of a man who had grown up in Harlem, who had
encountered obstacles such as poverty, grief, addiction, and limited opportunities all of his young life.
Poverty, grief, addiction and the limited opportunities, these patterns of suffering had dominated the
Harlem community. Allegedly the narrator has escaped the cycle of suffering within his community,
illustrating the family he had built and his stable job while his brother as chosen to pursue his dreams
and become a musician. It appears his brother Sonny, had fallen ... Show more content on

Throughout the story Baldwin illustrates that darkness is approaching when he says, And when light
fills the room, the child is filled with darkness. He knows that every time this happens he s moved just
a little closer to that darkness outside (7). The darkness and light Baldwin describes works as cycle,
similar to night and day, after light comes darkness and after darkness comes light. The pattern of
darkness and light is painted to symbolize the cycle of suffering and salvation, showing without one
the other cannot exist. It is how to achieve this balance of light and dark that the narrator struggles
with throughout the story. The narrator witnesses many instances of darkness, when his daughter died
he wrote, I was sitting in the living room in the dark, by myself, and I suddenly thought of Sonny. My
trouble made his real (14). This instance of darkness the narrator depicts shows that suffering hold a
present everywhere, it s universal, and people can cope with their suffering though relating to one
another. Furthermore, the recurring idea of darkness throughout the story shows that suffering will
always exist and it is a vital part of the human experience. However, one can find the light, escaping
the darkness for a moment, through relating to one another and showing compassion. In essence, the
symbols light and darkness are used to develop Baldwins theme that suffering is

Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings Essay
Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings
e. e. cummings poem, next to of course god america i, is a wonderful example of stylistic variation in
a text. Once again, we see his skill and mastery at manipulating the English language in order to
foreground a thought and turn it into a commentary on society. As with all of cummings works, there
is evidence of a multitude of variances and deviances at work, however, I shall concentrate on the area
of language variance, more specifically, domain.
Language variation and the area of domain, subject matter and function, are the easiest kinds of
variation to see within a text. Subject matter involves the use of lexical fields, that is to say, a grouping
of words, belonging to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, by jingo by gee by gosh by gum gives the impression that this speaker has not put any
thought into the words he speaks.
The last line of the poem shows the speaker drinking a glass of water rapidly. Why did cummings
choose to invert this line? Why does the speaker drink at all? cummings could be mentioning this
detail in an effort to portray just how irrelevant this speech really is. The adverb rapidly occurs in a
most unlikely position in this thought. If we eliminate the need for rhyming water with slaughter, since
the necessary rhyme for this poem might well have been achieved without inverting the syntax, then
cummings must have had some other reason for the inversion of the syntax. Could it be that by writing
a poem, which expresses a theme of inverted or confused philosophy, cummings inverts his apparently
objective commentary on the situation and the words in which he reports his commentary to produce
an ironic tone? This line, then, further serves to point to the inverted philosophy of this speaker and
foregrounds the insincerity and thoughtlessness behind this speech.
In this poem, carefully worked out in sonnet form, cummings pillories a Fourth of July speechmaker
by choosing patriotic and religious clichés common to platform oratory and compressing fragments of
them together in order to demonstrate the meaningless emptiness that the speakers

Essay about canadian tire audit report
Client risk profile
Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited (CTC) is primarily a canadian retailer, focusing on automotive
and general merchandise. Founded in 1922, the company has been around for almost a century,
building strong brand recognition in Canada. Initially starting as a car parts retailer they have
expanded rapidly into other areas, mainly general merchandise retail. They have other secondary
divisions being; Partsource Automotive stores (strictly automotive parts), Financial Services, Mark s
Work Wearhouse (clothing retailer), FGL Sports Ltd. (various sporting good retail chains), and
Canadian Tire Petroleum (gas stations and car washing). The main users of CTC s financial statements

This system causes many inefficiencies, both financial and non financial, for CTR in comparison to its
competitors (EXHIBIT CIBC REPORT). However, the dealer corporation model is as old as Canadian
Tire itself and extremely unlikely to change. Essentially the dealer is responsible for everything in
store, and the corporation takes care of the rest. A list of segregated responsibilities can be seen in
Exhibit Z.
Going Concern Canadian Tire Corporation is in good financial standing and extremely unlikely to
bankrupt in coming years. Currently CTC s debt to equity ratio is 0.242 below the industry average of
1.557, with a current ratio 0.614 above the industry average of 1.061. Addressing the debt to equity
shortfall, CTC has decreased its debt to equity from 1.897 to 1.739 between third quarters of 2012 and
2010. This is including the acquisition of FGL Sports Ltd. which spiked debt in 2011. (CITE
ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES) There is no issue of going concern.
Technology IT is centrally managed for each of CTC s specific divisions. Retail stores use software to
keep track of inventory and prices regarding items in stores. The stores then transmit this information
to make purchases from CTC. It is an integral part of their supply chain and retail operations. They are
continuing to upgrade these internally developed systems, which could pose a risk for exceptions.
These systems will require increased test of controls

The Crime Of Computer Forensics
Computer Forensics
In a world where technology is increasingly becoming the way of life, it was only a matter of time
before crime was no longer just in the streets but happening online as well. Criminals now get a new
approach to carry out their crimes with the use of computers. Since technology is more like a murder
mystery than catching the bad guy in the act, a new discipline of forensics needed to be put into place.
This is known as computer forensics. Forensic science is any science used for the purpose of law. In
the case of computer forensics it is the discipline that combines elements of law and computer science
to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage
devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law (U.S. Cert, 2008). Meaning if you do
something illegal on the Internet it can be found. Since the widespread use of computers, computer
crime has caused an increase in computer investigations during the twenty first century. Some reasons
for investigation include: identity theft, such as stolen social security and credit card numbers, to find
evidence of a cheating spouse, to investigate hackers on a computer system, to find evidence of child
pornography, and much more.
History of Computer Forensics
The 1970s were when military investigators first started finding instances of computer related criminal
activity and needed a more comprehensive approach for solving these technical crimes.

Hip Hop, AAnd Creative Aspect Of Music
Breaking through in the heart of the Bronx, Hip Hop was designed to empower and teach the youth,
while providing them an outlet for creative expression. Developed on five essential pillars, all working
towards: giving African Americans knowledge that they didn t have access to, inspiring them to read
and acquire true knowledge of self, and to understand the role that self has in America in relation to
the actual worth of self. Since the inception of Hip Hop, the genre has evolved through the times while
transcending new depths aligned with its original pillars.
An innovator in a sense, DJ Kool Herc founded Hip Hop by the early 70 s. MC s, DJ s, breakdancing,
graffiti and music encompass the five pillars of Hip Hop. Modern inversions interpret these pillars in
many different ways. Prevalent through all major cities, graffiti evolved to the murals on the side of
buildings, and the creative aspect of music videos. Artists have visions interpreted in the way they
decide to imagine their visuals. Breakdancing has become the advance dance crazes that sweep the
nations. People in Japan are hitting the Nae Nae because of Hip Hop s mass globalization. MC s are

  • 2. The Overcoat Literary Analysis In the short story The Overcoat, Nikolai Gogol satirizes government bureaucracy and illustrates the ridiculousness of government figures. In the story, a ninth class clerk named Akaky has a new overcoat stolen from him, and when he goes to the government for help, he is met with disdain that eventually causes him to fall ill and die. Through the literary devices of tone, point of view, and characterization, Gogol makes mockery of social classes and the government. In the story, Gogol uses a humorous tone to satirize government officials. Although the subject matter is very serious with Akaky s poor lifestyle on top of the crime he has fallen victim to, Gogol uses humor to illustrate the silliness of government officials. One prime example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He does this by telling the story in third person omniscient, and emphasizing the silliness of the government s mindset by entering it, while also showing Akaky s shock to the ridiculous actions of government officials. An example of this is the conversation between the important personage and Akaky over the crime of his stolen overcoat. When Akaky first enters the office of the important personage, the important personage is said to have spoken with a hard sharp voice, that he has practiced at home in front of a mirror, before taking the job. Although it is shown to the audience that the harsh disposition of the important personage is a farce, Akaky can not see this. Gogol then flips to his perspective, where Akaky is attempting to control his tongue because he is so scared. After the important personage attempts to establish himself as superior, Akaky has to be taken out of the office, where he is almost unconscious. The perspective then flips back to the important personage, who is pleased at the dramatic effect that he had created. Gogol uses this third person omniscient point of view in order to show not only the sham of the self important government officials, but also to illustrate its disastrous effect on the lower class. • 3. The United States Army And Selective Service Essay The most hardworking people are usually the least recognized. They are generally the least paid as well. There must be some sort of incentive for them to continually work so hard. The United States Army has been the underdogs of the military branch. The United States Army is probably the hardest working branch of the military, but also the least sought after. To the general public they are not considered to be at the top of the spectrum amongst the other branches of military. The government has helped in creating a bias within the branches of military by making the standards to get into the military so low compared to some of the other branches. The Army should be considered the People s Army. There is a pivotal point in life where as a man must enroll in the selective service. That is a really scary point in life because it seems like there is a chance to be selected in the military by draft. There is also entrance in the military by choice. There is a percentage of Americans that willingly enter into the military coming straight out of high school. Those Americans that willingly want to join the military are required to take a test called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB as it is most commonly called. That test acts as an entrance exam to every branch of the military, as well as what jobs you qualify for once you pick a branch. The every year Americans shoot to make the highest score possible in order to be apart of the more sought after branches ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Legal Malpractice Case It is noted that when a company fails to meet its obligations management, employees, suppliers and customers, which is open to legal malpractice claims. The defence against malpractice lawsuits can be costly for companies, and even if they win, your reputation could be damaged. Entrepreneurs have to understand what actions constitute negligence, criminal sanctions for negligence and how to protect themselves from malpractice lawsuits . The law defines negligence as the failure of a person or company to practice the level of care that a rational, sane person had practiced under the same conditions. When the lack of preparation or foresight leads to damage, the plaintiff may claim the company was negligent and sue for monetary damages. The harm can come in the form of physical pain, emotional suffering, economic loss, or a combination of the three . The plaintiffs must prove five elements to win a malpractice case against a business. Applicants must demonstrate that the company had a legal obligation to them and breached that duty. They have to prove that the damage would not have occurred were it not for the actions of the company. Applicants must demonstrate that the company should have ... • 5. Social Comparison Theory The social comparison theory offers some level of explanation for how media images actually come to impact the way women feel about their bodies. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves in relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that people compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to them. Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being either or better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual compares himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. In contrast, downward comparisons involve a person comparing himself or herself to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to which women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most women to achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall short of standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women, it is difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, you re not good enough. The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid evaluating themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies that target women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images, in order to motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet products, makeup, hair products). If women see a discrepancy between themselves and the images they view in advertisements (which the almost definitely will), they will be more inclined to buy the products that are advertised (Thompson Coovert, ... • 7. Pros And Cons Of Mandatory National Service The topic of mandatory national service has been around for years now, and there will always be arguments on whether it should be enforced or not. Some may say that it takes away our freedom, but is it not what gives us freedom in the first place? The United States military, national service, as well as community service is based on volunteers. That is what makes this country great, but there are less volunteers as years go by. Crime increases, streets are not safe anymore, Americans are oblivious to what is happening around the world. There are so many opportunities to give back to the country, yet, not many care. Today s generation is based on social trends, and self gratification. There is also the fact that many young people do not know what to do with their life after high school, some continue to college or focus on work, others do not work nor study. Therefore, all young men and women should be required to give two years to national service because it can help solve problems as well as build the community back together. Having mandatory national service implies that every young person between ages 18 through 25 will be required to give back to the country through some type of national service. This includes the Military, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other nonprofit organizations. It does not necessarily involve preparing for combat, nor risking a life, but helping those in need, making the world a better place by taking care of the environment. Everyone should have the obligation to serve. John F. Kennedy ones said, A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living. Today s military rejects include tomorrows hard core unemployed. Meaning that national service is something every citizen should be a part of. After all, it provides young adults with strength and pride of their country, as well as training in the career they are leaning towards. (Kennedy) Today s generation think it is okay to treat others with disrespect, and sadly many parents have no recourse to that kind of behavior. These can be signs to lack of attention. Service activities can help with emotions and behaviors, ensuring success in people s future. After high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sometimes we don t really realize that that we receive gifts every day, but the ones on special occasions like Christmas or Easter. That is why the greatest gift anyone can receive is food since it s culturally important, not everyone has it, and we can t live without it. • 9. The Pros and Cons of Ethanol as a Renewable Source of Energy I. Introduction One of the most hotly contested debates in today s realm of environmental concern is how to secure energy for the maintenance and improvement of quality of life in the future. To date, humanity has been blessed with plentiful reserves of cheap crude oil, which can be refined into a multitude of items that make the lives of many so convenient gasoline, heating oil, natural gas, plastics, and fertilizers. In some parts of the world, these technologies merely facilitate survival. But concern over what happens when these supplies dwindle is universal. Science has revealed that oil will not last forever at the rate it is being consumed. Therefore, alternatives must be developed that can provide sustainable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fossil fuel consumption in the United States is colossal. In Colorado, the average household uses 70 million Btu of energy from natural gas and 150 million Btu from gasoline in 2000. (Energy Information Administration) That s around 1,320 gallons of gas per household, per year. (US EPA) In that same year, multiply that by Colorado s 1,658,238 households (US Census Bureau) and find that the state s residential sector consumed around 2,188,874,160 gallons of gas at the turn of the century. Per capita, Colorado ranks just 36th amongst the states in energy consumption. (Energy Information Administration) This does not begin to tell the whole story. On the whole, keeping with Colorado as an example, we in this state used 1.35 quadrillion Btu of energy in 2003, about 1.4% of the U.S. 98.6 quadrillion Btu, with just over 2% coming from renewable sources. Also in 2003, the world was calculated as using about 421 quadrillion Btu of energy (around 6% coming from renewables). (EIA Energy Outlook) The U.S. produces less than a fifth of this. (USGS) Ever hear someone throw out that statistic that America, with just under 5% of the world s population, uses around one fourth of the world s energy? It s true. Leadership style is the pattern of behavior used by a leader as recognized by those who are led. Good leaders add value, impart energy and maximize potential. • 11. Women s National Basketball Association Essay The Women s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The league was founded in 1996 but didn t officially kick off until 1997. While it s not the first major women s professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has received full backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in its 20th season under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played from June to September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the middle of October. Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few discrepancies between the two leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA games, the players of the WNBA deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game more challenging, players continue to show their hard work in the offseason by playing overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing for charities as a result of their work. There is the idea that the WNBA is less exciting than the NBA due to the lack of dunking. The dunk, or the alley oop (lob to the dunk) has become an intricate part of the men s game but it is not so often used in the woman s. This painting was before Lichtenstein began his pop art works, which you can tell the difference if you compare Look Mickey and Drowning Girl. These two paintings are very different Look Mickey looks like a beginner s process and Drowning Girl looks more professional. Lichtenstein borrowed the original image from a Donald Duck story book that showed Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck standing on a dock fishing. Lichtenstein made alterations to the original image such as changing the shades of the original colors and added more realistic humor. In the original image you see the Mickey and Donald that everyone knows and loves having a good laugh, but in Lichtenstein you see more humor and happiness in Donald s eyes. Donald and Mickey s happiness rubs off on you because you can feel that whatever is going on is supposed to be funny and it is supposed to make you burst out into laughter almost as if you were right there with them. Lichtenstein added a text to it, Look Mickey, I ve hooked a big one!! The text gives more insight to what is going on in the picture because now our imaginations have something else to create an image to see what will happen next. Lichtenstein focused on Donald and Mickey and rotated the dock making it look sideways rather than at the end and at the same time he was able to keep them in almost the same positions. He was able to position Donald s body differently as well and his fishing rod to make it balance better. Donald is leaning further into the water and Mickey is less and Mickey is blushing more because of how much he s laughing rather than how he originally looked in comparison to the original ... Mayans would also work everyday in order to support their families. It is important to know that one farmer did not own all of a piece of land, as farming was communal. It is also crucial to know that no money was used in Mayan economics. Farmers were required to give portions of crops to the government as a form of tax. Language Acquisition And Learning Of Linguistics On the contrary, teachers may leave University with extensive theoretical knowledge about linguistics but it can be sometimes seem far removed from the real concrete situations they face in the field; and just one practical case they have to deal with may give them more insight into a problem and its solutions than any amount of theoretical understanding. In this sense, it is noteworthy that much of linguistics today is corpus based. Which means that the theories actually come from studying real world texts and are therefore founded in practical experience. A language teacher can build on linguistics research trough their own experience to improve their teaching ability. Within this context, a teacher gaining knowledge from practice will have real samples on how language is used by their students regarding language acquisition and learning; so they will be able to base their investigations on them. The more practice teachers have the wider learners corpora will be there for the development of this technique, allowing them to detect and recognise the most frequent uses and structures with a view to introduce them in the curriculum. The people of Bigmessia in order to move from the past, to shift forward for the present, and preserve a better future for our upcoming generations do declare and affirm this Constitution for the nation of Bigmessia. The nation of Bigmessia will work better with a parliamentary system due to two aspects: the international success of parliamentarism and the history of Bigmessia. The flexibility of a parliamentary system provides the best method for managing such a diverse nation (Linz, 61). There are too many issues and interests in Bigmessia in which having one strong executive can be very detrimental and problematic. The plethora of peoples and issues require a legislating body or leader to have careful deliberation and coalition building that only a parliamentary system can provide. The last thing Bigmessia needs is more polarization (more likely to come with presidentalism). In a country with ethnic, economic and religious divides, there needs to be a leader that can be a unifying symbol for the majority of Bigmessia. Thus, this neutral figure can provide moral ballast in a crisis or act as a moderator between the prime minister and his opponents (Linz, 61). The president will be elected by the entire country and requires a majority of 60% to win. If there is no majority, then the top two candidates will move into a run off election. This percentage ensures that the people have to vote for someone that most people admire or respect, since even if the Christian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What we need to recognise is what classroom management is and how much does student behavior factor? Why is it significant? What strategies does my mentor use to establish classroom management within the class? If we know the behaviour of our students, what do we need to do to ensure that effective classroom management is successfully acquired? All these questions need to be answered as they all link towards a successful lesson and student cooperation. During my two weeks of placement, I was placed at St Albans Primary School in a prep class. Considering that these students are at a young age, they are in a position where they are still developing skills and are in the process of becoming mature, therefore classroom management is crucial. In the class that I was in, students would often cause trouble with other members of the class, they are easily distracted and overall difficult to handle. Being that I am a pre service teacher, they often took advantage of me while I conducted the class, they would do the events explained above, and this is due to the lack of classroom management and my ability to maintain student behaviour. In the Cruzan case, Nancy s autonomy by way of her parents substituted judgment was overridden in favor of the State of Missouri s policy to preserve life. The adverb rapidly occurs in a most unlikely position in this thought. If we eliminate the need for rhyming water with slaughter, since the necessary rhyme for this poem might well have been achieved without inverting the syntax, then cummings must have had some other reason for the inversion of the syntax. Could it be that by writing a poem, which expresses a theme of inverted or confused philosophy, cummings inverts his apparently objective commentary on the situation and the words in which he reports his commentary to produce an ironic tone?
