Binge Drinking And The Minimum Legal Drinking Age

Binge Drinking and the Minimum Legal Drinking Age
In the year 1984, President Ronald Reagan enacted a law that increased the minimum drinking Age all
U.S states to 21 years. As a result, it is believed that the mortality rates due to road accidents reduced
from 5,000 in the 80 s to 2, 000 in 2005 (Dean Mooney). However, the issue of binge drinking
remains unsolved with learning institutions having to deal with it every semester. In response to this,
134 college presidents formed the Amethyst Initiative, which is, a proposal allowing persons aged
between 18 and 20 to consume alcoholic drinks Conversely, the Mothers against Drunk Driving
(MADD), which pushed for the enactment of the law in 1984 believes that the Amethyst Initiative is
misplaced. The push for a lower drinking age is a battle between the parental community and the
student fraternity. For the drinking age too be lowered the Amethyst Initiative must compile concrete
research and facts to support its findings. Nonetheless, historical data shows that increase in the
minimum legal drinking age results in a decrease in the amount of deaths. As argued by Barry,
Stellefson and Woosley, the MLDA clearly reduces alcohol consumption and its associated harms (8).
In light of this, one can argue that the minimum drinking age should remain at 21 as lowering it may
cause fatal consequences.
The factors can be broadly classified as internal, such as

Congested Roadways
Background The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes on road vehicles
such as motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses as mobile sources of air pollution (How Mobile Sources,
2016). Additionally, the EPA has stated that individuals who live in proximity to major roads appear to
have an increased incidence and severity of health problems (How Mobile Sources, 2016). These
statements by the EPA formed the basis of my research regarding Philadelphia s most congested
roadways. In June of 2013, The Inquirer s Emily Babay published an article titled The 13 Worst

In the interest of time, only 4 of the 13 roadwyas listed in The Inquirer s article The 13 Worst
Commutes Around Philadelphia were studied during the course of this experiment. The 3 roadways
analyzed in this study were selected because the commutes with the most congestion were primarily
confined within the city limits of Philadelphia. Other routes listed in The Inquirer s article ran through
Philadelphia and branched out to surrounding counties. The roadways with high levels of congestion
included in this study were I 676 from I 95 to I 76, I 76 from I 676 to Belmont Avenue, and I 95 from
the Betsy Ross Bridge to I 676. After identifying 3 roadways with high levels of congestion, 8 living
spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks) less than half a mile from these routes were selected and defined as
red locations. Additionally, eight living spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks) directly located along
roadways with normal congestion were selected as controls and defined as green locations. For the
purpose of this experiment, roadways with normal levels of congestion were defined as any route that
was not included in TRIP s survey of the most congested roadways in Philadelphia. For the purpose of
this experiment, the living spaces studied along Philadelphia s most congested roadways were Sister

Girl Model And Documentary Argument
Girl Model and Documentary as Argument Documentaries occupy a unique space in the film world.
Not only must these films attempt to provide a perspective on reality, they must also engage the
audience and provide a form of entertainment. In portraying reality, the films generally take on a
specific perspective. Documentary filmmakers create a film advocating a specific point of view in
order to create interest in the film and create a stronger film overall. Bill Nichols calls this the
documentary s argument (165). He states, [I]n documentary, realism serves to make an argument about
the historical world seem persuasive (Nichols 165). Persuading the audience is vital in films pertaining
to social issues such as defining and examining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the focus on Nadya and Ashley, the audience does not gain much information about the
companies who recruit and represent the models or the people who work with Nadya and Ashley.
Throughout the film, the audience does view interactions between Nadya and Ashley and the people
they work for, but there is very little emphasis placed on the other people depicted. There is some
focus on Ashley s supervisors and employers, but the focus is often negative. At one point, the
filmmaker includes an interview with Ashley where she mentions that she believes Messiah, the owner
of one of the agencies she scouts for, continues his job because he engages in inappropriate
relationships with the young models he recruits. Ashley states, [Messiah] loves models (Girl). She
never openly states that Messiah has relationships with his models, but the implication is clear.
Although this claim never goes farther, Ashley clearly connects the industry to the sex trade. Towards
the end of the film, Ashley addresses this point in another interview. She claims that some models find
themselves moving into prostitution. Ashley states that the girls already see themselves selling their
body for the camera, so they do not find prostitution a stretch (Girl). Including this interview near the
end of the film leaves the viewer with a lasting sense of unease about the

The Trunk By Daniel Muttered
The Trunk
Daniel muttered under his breath about how there was no way eight hours of sleep could go by so
quickly as he annoyingly went to turn the noise making alarm clock. He woke up suddenly due to the
loud alarm clock which he always seemed to not remember setting. He was in such a daze that he
almost forgot what today was. You see, today was the start of the winter holiday, and his buddies,
Ellie, James, and Ian were coming to visit for the weekend at the cottage. This was a new year s
tradition that went on ever since they were old enough to communicate and Daniel looked forward to

I had been driving for hours trying to make it home to the cottage for new years after performing a big
show out west. I m sure I have told you about not being the most on time person more than once by
now, and it is quite true. This time though I was very committed to making it back before midnight. I
had left early in the day, was now only a few hours from home, and it wasn t even eight yet! I was
even feeling pretty content of myself that is until the car in front of me slammed on his brakes. Now I
don t know if you guys have ever been on the inside when a car gets hit but let me tell you it is not
fun, especially when that car gets hit by someone going 100 km/h. Everything happened so quickly,
the blazing bright flash of the brake lights, the sound of screeching metal, and then everything just
went black.
I m not quite sure how much time passed while I was out, but at some point the revolting taste of
gasoline in my mouth woke me up. My car had dragged to the left after the impact and tumbled over
on the side of the road. Fortunately, the door on the passenger side wasn t in a bad shape as the driver

Of Anglo Saxon And Germanic Culture In Beowulf
Beowulf: The Exemplar of Anglo Saxon and Germanic Culture The Anglo Saxon and Germanic
culture is widely known for being raiders and pillagers. But as this epic poem is told, Beowulf shows a
different perspective of this culture, and embodies this culture in his heroic instances during this epic
poem. For the Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture is the backbone of this poem s atmosphere. As the
story is told and develops with Beowulf, he himself shows through his heroic instances what it means
to be a heroic figure. With that figure Beowulf will be displaying qualities such as honor, loyalty, and
strength, which are the three pillars of the Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture. Beowulf s first showing
of his loyalty was when he heard about Grendel and decided to go defeat this monster. When he heard
about Grendel, Hygelac s thane was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like
him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high born and powerful. He ordered a boat
that would ply the waves. He announced his plan: to sail the swan s road and search out that king, the
famous prince who needed defenders (Beowulf, Line 195 201). His decision to go and help the Danes
was one of debt, for he knew of Hrothgar and had helped his father during exile. As Beowulf and his
men arrived to Hrothgar s kingdom, his guards didn t know about this man coming, but when they saw
him they were just excited knowing he could be the one. We belong by birth to the Geat people

Betrayal In Othello Research Paper
By definition, betrayal is the act of deliberate dishonesty and disloyalty (vocabulary.com). It is a
common concept in which can destroy people and their relationships. Throughout William
Shakespeare s play Othello, acts of betrayal are committed among characters when Iago betrays
Othello, Othello betrays Desdemona, and finally, when Othello betrays himself. Revenge plays a
major role as to why Shakespeare includes betrayal to form conflicts and help advance the tragically
dramatic plot. To begin, the main characters, Iago and Othello, introduce this act of betrayal by
creating conflicts due to jealousy. Originally, the plan for revenge began when Iago dreamed and
expected to be the general Othello s lieutenant; however, Othello chose Cassio. ... Show more content

She didn t understand how she had been [dis]loyal (69) to her husband. For Othello to call her a subtle
whore (68) acts upon how betrayal is caused by misunderstood envy and vengeance. Still, Desdemona
respected and cherished Othello, calling him her noble lord (69). Her powerful affection was validated
when blaming herself (85) while Othello was murdering her. Still, stubborn Othello considered her as
a whore and a liar [who has] gone to burning hell (85). Shakespeare includes this betrayal because it
precisely displays an example where passion can be broken through the influence of strongly effective
characters like honest Iago (83). This betrayal leads to one of the dominant treasons in the work as a
whole: Othello abandoning himself. Lastly, Othello betrays himself when he realizes how he relied on
honest (51) Iago, who influenced the scheme for great revenge (83) to strangle [Desdemona] in her
bed (65). Othello is very honored and respected with a compelling reputation. His reputation was
ruined once Emilia, Iago s wife, discovered Desdemona with Othello murder[e]d in her bed (86).

The Environment Of A Soil Ecosystem
A soil ecosystem is composed of both living and non living matter with a diversity of interactions (The
Environmental Literacy Council, N.d.). This is a place where energy and matter are transformed and
transported. Analyses that can be used to assess the functioning of land ecosystems is abiotic
indicators, biological indicators, and atmospheric indicators. Abiotic indicators can include pH,
moisture, and temperature. Soil temperature and moisture are important environmental factors that
affect the conservation and physiology of earthworms (M.L. Presley et al, 1996). Biological indicators
can include earthworms, plants, and leaf litter. Atmospheric indicators include carbon dioxide
emissions. Interactions among these three indicators can also help to assess if the ecosystem is
functioning. It is hypothesized that a functioning ecosystem is related to many types of interactions,
such as earthworms eating leaf litter and leaf litter falling from the plants. It is predicted that IU has
good soil quality based on the fact is is near Jordan River, and there is a diversity of plant life
growing. What is the ecosystem s quality based on the interactions between leaf litter, soil, and
worms? The ecosystem is claimed to be functioning based on the biomass of the earthworms and leaf
litter and the pH, moisture, and temperature of the soil.

Brotherhood and their ideology. The first section, Politicizing Islam, focuses on the framework of
political Islam up to 1963 that allows for the development of the Syrian Muslin Brotherhood and their
early days. The second section entitled The Islamic Opposition to Ba athism, goes in depth into the
political, economic, and ideological subtleties fueling opposition between Islam and the Syrian Ba ath
party. The proceeding third segment, The rise of Jihadism in later 1970s Syria, examines the political
and ideological circumstances that gave ride to the jihadist trend in regards to the Brotherhood itself.
The fourth and final segmentation of the novel titled Ashes of Hama: The Syrian Islamist Movement
since 1982, will be devoted to the consequences of the exile of the Muslin Brotherhoods after the
Hama massacre, and how it then evolved to becomes the regimes most powerful political opponent.
The infamous Hama Massacre occurred in February 1982 in the Syrian city of Hama. The Syrian
government forcibly crushed an uprising of Muslin rebels largely consisting of members of the Muslin
Brotherhood. The hostilities had augmented throughout the 1960s and 1970s with the Muslin
Brotherhood harassing the regime with hit and run style guerilla tactics and assassinations. The 1982

Romanov Family Research Paper
The Execution of the Romanov Family After three centuries of Romanov rule, the people began to
grow unhappy with government leading to multiple protests and riots around Russia, starting the
Russian Revolution. This unrest eventually caused the Bolshevik Party s Central Committee to pass a
death sentence on the Romanov Family, helping them achieve their goal of a communist government.
On July 16, 1918, in protest of the Russian monarchy, Vladimir Lenin ordered armed guards to murder
the Romanov Family ending the Russian Revolution, which ultimately lead to the creation of the
Soviet Union.
The Romanov family ruled Russia for three centuries helping it become a major European power, but

Obscene: so excessive as to be offensive (http://www.webster.com/cgi bin/dictionary). This is the way
the Webster dictionary defines obscene. How do you? Some say obscene is vulgar; others say the best
way to describe obscene is through disgust. No matter how it is thought of, obscene material is
everywhere in society. Television is becoming more liberal, magazines are less edited, and music is
more abrasive. At some point, the public must put its foot down and demand censorship in order to

Numerous studies indicate that a preference for heavy metal music may be a significant marker for
alienation, substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, suicide risk, sex role stereotyping, or risk taking
behaviors during adolescence (http://www.aap.org/policy/01219.html). This statement, and others like
it, has been used as a hypothesis as to why the students opened fire killing 13 and wounding 23 at
Columbine. The explicit lyrics have been thought to motivate teenagers into committing acts of
violence. Take, for example, the lyrics from a band named Drowning Pool, Push me again, this is the

now you re here, driven by hate consumed by fear, let the bodies hit the floor

about committing murder because of alienation. All teenagers feel these feelings at some point while
they are growing up. While most teenagers can look to someone or something to get them through this
difficult time, some find release in music. If they are exposed to these types of lyrics, without any

Metasomatism is when an aqueous solution chemically alters a rock that in encounters. Apatite is a
useful tool for identifying these metasomatic changes in rocks. This widespread mineral, being a
reservoir, can give information on timing, duration, and composition of this solution. The two main
factors involved in tracking metasomatic processes in apatite are apatite s anion column and the
presence or absence of rare earth elements. Apatite s anion column is important because the elements
and/or compounds found there can substitute for each other in copious amounts, if not completely.
You can use knowledge of what the composition of apatite in a rock typically should be to determine
what change a varying apatite has undergone. For example, apatites found in a volcanic field might
have a high percentage of F and much lower percentages of Cl and CO3. If apatite is found in the
same or similar areas with a composition much different than that, say elevated levels of Cl and CO3
but low levels of F, then you could infer that an aqueous solution rich in Cl and CO3 has passed
through and reacted with the apatite. Rare earth elements (REEs) indicate metasomatism in a
comparable way. While the anion column shows changes through composition, REEs communicate
change with inclusions, specifically, the presence of the minerals monazite and xenotime. The
formation and growth of monazite and xenotime as inclusions are the results of coupled

Often termed as Europe s deadliest since World War II, the Yugoslavia War has been infamous for the
war crimes, which include ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and rape. These wars
supplemented and aided the weathering of the Yugoslav state, when its constituent republics declared

of understanding life, a kind of fundamentalism that cancels out the individuality of its members,
whose identity is no longer belong to the member in order to be part of the new identity of the society
in which the member will belong to. In fact, every member that was going to be part of that
organization had to understand the term of family and had to live as a family. As brothers, the Flenory
founded their organization of drug distribution in Detroit at the end of the 90s and gave it that name
especially because of their family relationship. 3 The main criminal acts and activities In 2003 the

An Overview Of Gestalt Psychology
An Overview of Gestalt Psychology Though not practiced in contemporary psychology, the school of
Gestalt meaning shape or form in Deutsch was a predominant topic among German psychologists in
the nineteenth century. The term Gestalt was coined as a definition for the perception of a whole
separate and different from its parts. Prior to this, psychologists had been analyzing the parts of the
whole in order to explain the whole. In order to test the new theory, principles of Gestalt were
established to prove that behavior is holistic rather than mere, singular sensations. These laws include:
Pragnanz, Closure, Continuity, Similarity, and Proximity. Experiments on chimpanzees seemed to
indicate that they use insight to solve problems. Using insight shows that they think holistically, which
helps prove Gestalt. This school of thought was often seen as academically lofty and obscure, but still
seems to be referenced if loosely today. At the turn of the twentieth century, Wilhelm Wundt and
Edward Titchener s atomistic views were dominant in psychology (Lefrançois, 2012). Wundt s
structural approach focused on reducing mental processes to the smallest individual unit in order to
understand the whole. Introspection was Wundt s chosen method for discovery. In the United States
and elsewhere, behaviorism and its proponents were also directing research. The behaviorists rejected
introspection for stimuli and responses, focusing on observable behavior (Lefrançois, 2012).

The Death of Julius Caesar, a Great Leader
Julius Caesar was a great leader of Rome. Not only did he lead a very strong army, but his people also
loved him. The debate is always should he have been killed or should he have lived and lead us to
more victories.
The first document that was used in the debate is a primary source. It s called De Vita Caesarum,
Divus Iulius. The document is a biography of Julius Caesar and his life. Suetonius wrote the
biography. Suetonius was a roman historian who wrote about the Roman Empire. It was written in 110
CE. It was written to show the side of the senators, and how they felt about having emperors. It is
trustworthy because Suetonius used eyewitnesses and other evidence from books to provide a lot of
information about Caesar. The only thing that I think is missing is the side of Caesar because he wrote
it from the perspective of the senators view. Which puts Caesar in a bad light because the senators did
not like Caesar. Considering that the article was written based off of the senators, it put Caesar in a
bad light. Meaning that this author did not want Caesar to live. Another document that was used was a
secondary source. It was an article written in the Britannica Student Encyclopedia. It was written for
the public to read and understand Julius Caesar. It was used to give a brief overview of Julius Caesar s
life. It talked about him as a person, the civil war that he was involved with, the march he lead, as well
as his reputation. The article is moderately trustworthy

Religion Is No Doubt A Popular Essay
College of Charleston
Zoroastrianism:
A Discussion
Christopher M. Kountz
REL 105 (05) 9:25 a.m. 10:40 a.m.
Spring 2015
In today s society, religion is no doubt a popular, if widely contested, topic. The vast array of belief
systems that exists worldwide has a significant influence on the opposing viewpoints of many current
hot button issues, and despite the intended separation of church and state here in the United States;
religion is both a social and political force. A person s spiritual beliefs often provide the basis for his
or her entire lifestyle, including physical appearance, dietary choices, and perhaps most importantly,
decisions that directly involve one s perspective of right and wrong. Even those who do not identify
with any one particular religion typically have some knowledge of the world s major religions, such as
Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, or Islam, simply because of their enormous numbers in terms of
followers which continue to rapidly expand.
However, beyond these theological giants exists a multitude of smaller, but no less meaningful, other
religions. Zoroastrianism, for example, is one of today s smallest religions, with an estimated 200,000
followers (Hartz, p. 8). As a comparison, the Islam religion boasts over one billion followers (Sonn, p.
185). Yet even though modern day Zoroastrianism is not nearly as widespread as its more prominent
counterparts, it is nonetheless an important cultural constituent, both due to its

Informative Essay On Sphynx Cats
If you ve ever looked at cat videos online, chances are you have seen ones with cats that have no hair.
They may bear a resemblance to aliens, but they are real cats, referred to as the Sphynx. Though some
people are put off by the appearance of this breed, others are intrigued and find them endearing. If you
are part of the second group, you might be interested in owning a Sphynx cat for yourself and what is
involved in buying and owning one. The truth is that there is no universal yes or no answer for
whether the Sphynx is the appropriate cat to own, as it largely depends on the owner s specific needs
and abilities. To know if the Sphynx is the right cat for you, many aspects must be looked into.
The first thing anyone notices about Sphynx ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to the introverted personalities of other cats, Sphynxes crave attention, and tend to be
friendlier around strangers. They are often compared to dogs for this reason. If you have a Sphynx,
especially a young one, expect it to be very hyperactive, running and jumping all over the place. This
is a high energy cat which can perform acrobatic tricks, much like a monkey. (PetMD) These cats have
boundless energy, so much time should be allotted to playing with them so they do not become bored
and stressed. They are also very curious and exploratory, making sure to inspect just about anything
they can find. Safety measures should be taken for items that your cat could easily open or ingest.
Sphynx cats are generally more affectionate with their owners, and can be very emotionally dependent
on them too. Sphynx cats can get stressed easily, and are prone to separation anxiety. PetHelpful
states, If you are leaving the house for long periods of time, your Sphynx s heart is going to break.
Unless you have a companion for it, it is going to become depressed. (PetHelpful) It is not
recommended to spend a long time away from your Sphynx, even if you hire a petsitter to feed it, as it
craves the physical affection of its owners. The upside to dealing with this potential issue is that you
would end up with a very loyal cat, who will provide much love and affection, that for many people it
is worth all the trouble

Lottery , Shirley Jackson really poses the question of whether or not tradition should be a rational for
committing irrational actions in life and emphasizes the point of traditions potential effect of
controlling one s actions on the basis of whatever traditions that a person values. The Lottery is a story
where the day starts out as a nice day, but at the end of the day, the result of the outcome of the village
s lottery is that the villages society stones Tessie to death in regards to the village s tradition. Jackson
did not like the lottery along with its outcome and there are many different ways that Jackson presents
that. Overall, the ways that Jackson shows her dislike of the Lottery is by the tone she uses, her
character description and by the symbols she uses.
One way Jackson shows her dislike of the lottery and its outcome is the tone she uses. The tone that
she uses is a negative tone. Irrationality is a key component outlining Jackson negative tone of
tradition that plays a major role in people s actions. An example is when the women came shortly after

Aestheticism In The Picture Of Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Grey In The Picture of Dorian Grey, Oscar Wilde, sets out to show the influence
of aestheticism in late Victorian era. The philosophy of aestheticism was that art should be judged
purely by its beauty and form rather than by any underlying moral message art for art s sake that art
merely exist to be beautiful (Buzwell). In writing the preface of the novel Wilde writes, all art is quite
useless. (Wilde 4) This statement is in contrast to the events that take place in the novel. The artwork
reflects the evil actions of Dorian Grey and a myriad of characters are impacted by the influence the
portrait has on its subject. As the novel begins Basil Hallward is in awe of Dorian Grey. It is apparent
that Basil Hallward admires Dorian s physical beauty to excess. He paints the young handsome
gentleman with enthusiasm. Basil s artistic expression creates a masterpiece. When first describing
Dorian to Lord Henry, Basil describes how Dorian has become integral to his artistic expression,
suggesting that Basil s interest consists most essentially in Dorian s physical beauty, since that can be
represented in Basil s art. As Basil is finishing the portrait and once he is done, almost everything that
he says to Dorian is flattery of Dorian s beauty. Dorian becomes in love with the painting and with his
own beauty. He grew more and more enamoured of his own beauty, more and more interested in the
corruption of his own soul. Basil is

  • 3. Binge Drinking And The Minimum Legal Drinking Age Karzhova Marina Erin Beaver English Composition II 5 November 2014 Binge Drinking and the Minimum Legal Drinking Age In the year 1984, President Ronald Reagan enacted a law that increased the minimum drinking Age all U.S states to 21 years. As a result, it is believed that the mortality rates due to road accidents reduced from 5,000 in the 80 s to 2, 000 in 2005 (Dean Mooney). However, the issue of binge drinking remains unsolved with learning institutions having to deal with it every semester. In response to this, 134 college presidents formed the Amethyst Initiative, which is, a proposal allowing persons aged between 18 and 20 to consume alcoholic drinks Conversely, the Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD), which pushed for the enactment of the law in 1984 believes that the Amethyst Initiative is misplaced. The push for a lower drinking age is a battle between the parental community and the student fraternity. For the drinking age too be lowered the Amethyst Initiative must compile concrete research and facts to support its findings. Nonetheless, historical data shows that increase in the minimum legal drinking age results in a decrease in the amount of deaths. As argued by Barry, Stellefson and Woosley, the MLDA clearly reduces alcohol consumption and its associated harms (8). In light of this, one can argue that the minimum drinking age should remain at 21 as lowering it may cause fatal consequences. The factors can be broadly classified as internal, such as ... Congested Roadways Background The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes on road vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses as mobile sources of air pollution (How Mobile Sources, 2016). Additionally, the EPA has stated that individuals who live in proximity to major roads appear to have an increased incidence and severity of health problems (How Mobile Sources, 2016). These statements by the EPA formed the basis of my research regarding Philadelphia s most congested roadways. In the interest of time, only 4 of the 13 roadwyas listed in The Inquirer s article The 13 Worst Commutes Around Philadelphia were studied during the course of this experiment. The 3 roadways analyzed in this study were selected because the commutes with the most congestion were primarily confined within the city limits of Philadelphia. Other routes listed in The Inquirer s article ran through Philadelphia and branched out to surrounding counties. The roadways with high levels of congestion included in this study were I 676 from I 95 to I 76, I 76 from I 676 to Belmont Avenue, and I 95 from the Betsy Ross Bridge to I 676. After identifying 3 roadways with high levels of congestion, 8 living spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks) less than half a mile from these routes were selected and defined as red locations. Additionally, eight living spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks) directly located along roadways with normal congestion were selected as controls and defined as green locations. For the purpose of this experiment, roadways with normal levels of congestion were defined as any route that was not included in TRIP s survey of the most congested roadways in Philadelphia. • 6. Girl Model And Documentary Argument Girl Model and Documentary as Argument Documentaries occupy a unique space in the film world. Not only must these films attempt to provide a perspective on reality, they must also engage the audience and provide a form of entertainment. In portraying reality, the films generally take on a specific perspective. Documentary filmmakers create a film advocating a specific point of view in order to create interest in the film and create a stronger film overall. Bill Nichols calls this the documentary s argument (165). He states, [I]n documentary, realism serves to make an argument about the historical world seem persuasive (Nichols 165). Throughout the film, the audience does view interactions between Nadya and Ashley and the people they work for, but there is very little emphasis placed on the other people depicted. There is some focus on Ashley s supervisors and employers, but the focus is often negative. At one point, the filmmaker includes an interview with Ashley where she mentions that she believes Messiah, the owner of one of the agencies she scouts for, continues his job because he engages in inappropriate relationships with the young models he recruits. Ashley states, [Messiah] loves models (Girl). She never openly states that Messiah has relationships with his models, but the implication is clear. Although this claim never goes farther, Ashley clearly connects the industry to the sex trade. Towards the end of the film, Ashley addresses this point in another interview. She claims that some models find themselves moving into prostitution. Ashley states that the girls already see themselves selling their body for the camera, so they do not find prostitution a stretch (Girl). • 8. Of Anglo Saxon And Germanic Culture In Beowulf Beowulf: The Exemplar of Anglo Saxon and Germanic Culture The Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture is widely known for being raiders and pillagers. But as this epic poem is told, Beowulf shows a different perspective of this culture, and embodies this culture in his heroic instances during this epic poem. For the Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture is the backbone of this poem s atmosphere. As the story is told and develops with Beowulf, he himself shows through his heroic instances what it means to be a heroic figure. With that figure Beowulf will be displaying qualities such as honor, loyalty, and strength, which are the three pillars of the Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture. Beowulf s first showing of his loyalty was when he heard about Grendel and decided to go defeat this monster. When he heard about Grendel, Hygelac s thane was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high born and powerful. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves. He announced his plan: to sail the swan s road and search out that king, the famous prince who needed defenders (Beowulf, Line 195 201). His decision to go and help the Danes was one of debt, for he knew of Hrothgar and had helped his father during exile. It is a common concept in which can destroy people and their relationships. Throughout William Shakespeare s play Othello, acts of betrayal are committed among characters when Iago betrays Othello, Othello betrays Desdemona, and finally, when Othello betrays himself. Revenge plays a major role as to why Shakespeare includes betrayal to form conflicts and help advance the tragically dramatic plot. To begin, the main characters, Iago and Othello, introduce this act of betrayal by creating conflicts due to jealousy. Originally, the plan for revenge began when Iago dreamed and expected to be the general Othello s lieutenant; however, Othello chose Cassio. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Still, Desdemona respected and cherished Othello, calling him her noble lord (69). Her powerful affection was validated when blaming herself (85) while Othello was murdering her. Still, stubborn Othello considered her as a whore and a liar [who has] gone to burning hell (85). Shakespeare includes this betrayal because it precisely displays an example where passion can be broken through the influence of strongly effective characters like honest Iago (83). This betrayal leads to one of the dominant treasons in the work as a whole: Othello abandoning himself. Lastly, Othello betrays himself when he realizes how he relied on honest (51) Iago, who influenced the scheme for great revenge (83) to strangle [Desdemona] in her bed (65). Othello is very honored and respected with a compelling reputation. His reputation was ruined once Emilia, Iago s wife, discovered Desdemona with Othello murder[e]d in her bed (86). • 10. The Environment Of A Soil Ecosystem A soil ecosystem is composed of both living and non living matter with a diversity of interactions (The Environmental Literacy Council, N.d.). This is a place where energy and matter are transformed and transported. Analyses that can be used to assess the functioning of land ecosystems is abiotic indicators, biological indicators, and atmospheric indicators. Abiotic indicators can include pH, moisture, and temperature. Soil temperature and moisture are important environmental factors that affect the conservation and physiology of earthworms (M.L. Presley et al, 1996). Biological indicators can include earthworms, plants, and leaf litter. Atmospheric indicators include carbon dioxide emissions. Interactions among these three indicators can also help to assess if the ecosystem is functioning. It is hypothesized that a functioning ecosystem is related to many types of interactions, such as earthworms eating leaf litter and leaf litter falling from the plants. It is predicted that IU has good soil quality based on the fact is is near Jordan River, and there is a diversity of plant life growing. What is the ecosystem s quality based on the interactions between leaf litter, soil, and worms? To resolve these rumors, the family was ordered to go down to the cellar of the house to take publicity pictures to subdue these rumors ( Romanov family executed ). This statement, and others like it, has been used as a hypothesis as to why the students opened fire killing 13 and wounding 23 at Columbine. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Metasomatism is when an aqueous solution chemically alters a rock that in encounters. Apatite is a useful tool for identifying these metasomatic changes in rocks. This widespread mineral, being a reservoir, can give information on timing, duration, and composition of this solution. The two main factors involved in tracking metasomatic processes in apatite are apatite s anion column and the presence or absence of rare earth elements. Apatite s anion column is important because the elements and/or compounds found there can substitute for each other in copious amounts, if not completely. You can use knowledge of what the composition of apatite in a rock typically should be to determine what change a varying apatite has undergone. For example, apatites found in a volcanic field might have a high percentage of F and much lower percentages of Cl and CO3. If apatite is found in the same or similar areas with a composition much different than that, say elevated levels of Cl and CO3 but low levels of F, then you could infer that an aqueous solution rich in Cl and CO3 has passed through and reacted with the apatite. Rare earth elements (REEs) indicate metasomatism in a comparable way. While the anion column shows changes through composition, REEs communicate change with inclusions, specifically, the presence of the minerals monazite and xenotime. The formation and growth of monazite and xenotime as inclusions are the results of coupled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. An Overview Of Gestalt Psychology An Overview of Gestalt Psychology Though not practiced in contemporary psychology, the school of Gestalt meaning shape or form in Deutsch was a predominant topic among German psychologists in the nineteenth century. The term Gestalt was coined as a definition for the perception of a whole separate and different from its parts. Prior to this, psychologists had been analyzing the parts of the whole in order to explain the whole. In order to test the new theory, principles of Gestalt were established to prove that behavior is holistic rather than mere, singular sensations. These laws include: Pragnanz, Closure, Continuity, Similarity, and Proximity. Experiments on chimpanzees seemed to indicate that they use insight to solve problems. Using insight shows that they think holistically, which helps prove Gestalt. This school of thought was often seen as academically lofty and obscure, but still seems to be referenced if loosely today. At the turn of the twentieth century, Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener s atomistic views were dominant in psychology (Lefrançois, 2012). Wundt s structural approach focused on reducing mental processes to the smallest individual unit in order to understand the whole. Introspection was Wundt s chosen method for discovery. In the United States and elsewhere, behaviorism and its proponents were also directing research. The behaviorists rejected introspection for stimuli and responses, focusing on observable behavior (Lefrançois, 2012). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s called De Vita Caesarum, Divus Iulius. The document is a biography of Julius Caesar and his life. Suetonius wrote the biography. Suetonius was a roman historian who wrote about the Roman Empire. It was written in 110 CE. It was written to show the side of the senators, and how they felt about having emperors. It is trustworthy because Suetonius used eyewitnesses and other evidence from books to provide a lot of information about Caesar. The only thing that I think is missing is the side of Caesar because he wrote it from the perspective of the senators view. Which puts Caesar in a bad light because the senators did not like Caesar. Considering that the article was written based off of the senators, it put Caesar in a bad light. Meaning that this author did not want Caesar to live. Another document that was used was a secondary source. It was an article written in the Britannica Student Encyclopedia. It was written for the public to read and understand Julius Caesar. Kountz REL 105 (05) 9:25 a.m. 10:40 a.m. Spring 2015 In today s society, religion is no doubt a popular, if widely contested, topic. The vast array of belief systems that exists worldwide has a significant influence on the opposing viewpoints of many current hot button issues, and despite the intended separation of church and state here in the United States; religion is both a social and political force. A person s spiritual beliefs often provide the basis for his or her entire lifestyle, including physical appearance, dietary choices, and perhaps most importantly, decisions that directly involve one s perspective of right and wrong. Even those who do not identify with any one particular religion typically have some knowledge of the world s major religions, such as Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, or Islam, simply because of their enormous numbers in terms of followers which continue to rapidly expand. However, beyond these theological giants exists a multitude of smaller, but no less meaningful, other religions. Zoroastrianism, for example, is one of today s smallest religions, with an estimated 200,000 followers (Hartz, p. 8). As a comparison, the Islam religion boasts over one billion followers (Sonn, p. 185). Yet even though modern day Zoroastrianism is not nearly as widespread as its more prominent counterparts, it is nonetheless an important cultural constituent, both due to its ...
