resulting from Ms. Liebeck s efforts to collect for damages sustained when she spilled extremely hot
coffee into her lap in 1992. The issues, applicable laws and the conclusion the jury reached will also

1994, p.1). The jury decided that the plaintiff was entitled to both compensatory damages of $200,000,
reduced by $40,000 for her own negligence, and punitive damages totaling $2.7 million (Gerlin, 1994,
p.1). Gerlin (1994) goes on to state that the jury found that McDonald s had engaged in willful,
reckless or malicious conduct and subsequently used that for the basis of their punitive damages (p. 2).

(Gerlin, 1994, p.2). The jury concluded that McDonald s behaved callously and punished them

he has some similarities to the book in his work, much of his finished production is very different.
Burton goes wrong in some very obvious ways and also some more subtle ways as well. The
difference that stood out to me the most was how Burton totally changed the background of the
leading character Ichabod. In the short story, Ichabod is a school teacher who lives in each of the
surrounding families houses for one week at a time. He has a very humble personality and he also
believes in superstition as he appreciates the beauty in nature around him. In the film, however, he is
portrayed as a peculiar constable from New York City. He is also more scientific and a skeptic as

In 1950 s Australia, post WWII, everyone wanted to be living the American Dream. Everyone wanted
a nice house and a large backyard, cute kids and a stay at home wife, a stable job and a steady income,
and all the material products in the world. In 1950 s Australia, Bruce Dawe wrote many poems. In
three of his poems Enter Without So Much as Knocking; Americanized; and Breakthrough he used
techniques such as language, juxtaposition and metaphors to express his views about the negative
effects of consumerism, American influence and technology.
In the poem Enter Without So Much as Knocking , Bruce Dawe uses the language of television to
display the effect technology and advertisements had on daily Australian life in the 1950 s. In the first
stanza, Dawe wrote ...first thing he heard was Bobby Dazzler on Channel 7: Hello, hello, hello all you
lucky people... The stanza is focused on a ten day old baby who has been taken home and the first
thing he hears is the catch phrase of a TV personality. This tells us that in Dawe s world, children are
exposed to the news and the power of ads as young as possible, to force them into a life of technology
and big companies. In stanza three, the language becomes more demanding and jarring. Dawe uses
capitalization, repetition and short sentences to create a list of rules society is being forced to follow.
He uses road rules such as walk. Don t walk. Turn left. No parking, and the lack of emotion in the
words highlights how he believes this is not the way to live. The fifth stanza is written as the adult. It s
a long sentence filled with the jargon of advertising and superficial connections to family and friends,
and through this language use Dawe shows us exactly what he s afraid of.
Americanized is, as the title suggests, a poem about American influence. It is an extended metaphor,
where the mother in the poem is America, the child being Australia, and their relationship which is not
built on trust or love but rather need and fear. This basic human relationship has been twisted by Dawe

Summary Of Imagery In All Quiet On The Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque explores the idea that war can destroy a generation of men physically, mentally
and emotionally in his anti war novel titled All Quiet on the Western Front. The author uses first
person narrative through a young German soldier named Paul Baumer to illustrate the terrorizing and
difficult lives of those who served in World War â… . Baumer is one of the several students who
voluntarily join the army along with his classmates, for they were driven to by their teacher, Kantorek
who stresses how it is their duty to protect and fight for their country Germany. Remarque highlights
the fact that Baumer is an inexperienced, innocent, young man who faces the constant struggle of
fighting to stay alive at such an early age. In Erich Maria Remarque s classic anti war novel, the
author uses diction, explicit imagery and first person narration to illustrate the realistic portrayal of the
horrors of war and argues against its necessity.
Remarque s use of diction creates an honest and very real viewpoint on war, which bolds the anti war
aspect of the novel. Remarque too fought in the war, so he was very candid with the subject, which is
portrayed quite clearly in the novel. In the novel it states, we were eighteen and had begun to love life
and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts.
We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we
believe in the war (88).

In order to help my community to grow I will be helping inform people of how inappropriate it is to
commit these violations while telling them to spread the word that way the information is passed
among everyone throughout the whole community of the University of Missouri. Another way my
behavior has changed is I am planning on becoming more involved in the judicial system to make sure
that we are conquering problems within the University s community, and helping people from the

became even more scared to be expelled. Setting up the meeting with the Judicial board was different
because the system was something I never saw before and without the directions I would not have
been able to set up the meeting. When I got to the meeting I sat in the office for a little while without
anyone coming up or anyone besides another girl who was there for her meeting, then I waited for my

Fahrenheit 451 and The Allegory of the Cave relate in the sense that society is ignorant and fears
facing reality. In both, the discovery of something unknown or unfamiliar changes the characters
views on the world, especially after being exposed to something so different to what you have spent
your whole life knowing. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag, a man whose job as a fireman was to rid of
books by setting them on fire, met a young girl named Clarisse, who talked to him about the time
when firemen put out fires instead of starting them, and read and wrote books instead of trying to
eliminate all of them. When Montag learned this, he became rather curious and began collecting books
and hiding them in his home to read and try to discover the meanings books held. He found that the
reason society feared it so much was because the books writing could trigger negative emotions like
sadness. Still, he wanted to show society that there is nothing wrong with that, and that books need to
be brought back. Doing this meant putting his reputation in jeopardy, but having begun to see how
ignorant society was, he couldn t sit and pretend to be happy with it. Society was trying so hard to
create a utopia and avoid facing reality that they didn t stop to see how much of the world they were

people do not know but this is a severe thing that there is more than 170 million space debris floating
within 35000 km of Earth and over 29,000 are a size larger than 10cm (ESA). Even a 1 cm debris
probably could disable a spacecraft (ESA). What makes this problem worse is space debris also crash
into each other and create hundred more pieces each time and this chain reaction will create a dense
cloud of space debris in certain orbits so anything cannot traverse safely (National1). The space debris
is a serious problem that needs all the countries and organizations that launched or planning to launch
to space to get attention with. If people are still despite the serious consequences caused by the space
debris and no countermeasure are taken, the exponential growth of debris creates by the collision
would become too hazardous to continue space operation in low Earth orbit (Whitehouse). In order to
decrease the impacts of space debris, national space agencies and organizations need to devising plans
or following some guidelines to cleanup the space debris or at least limiting the future space debris.
