Employee Rights Protected From Employer Discrimination
According to Walsh (2013) it is acknowledged that, employee rights protected from employer
discrimination in Section 7 of the NLRA included the right to form or join a union, bargain
collectively, or engage in other concerted activity for mutual aid and protection. Furthermore, the U.S.
Constitution permits Congress whose operations have the capability to vitally affect interstate
commerce. Therefore, since Drake and Keeler s employer meets the criterion for coverage under the
LMRA by engaging in interstate commerce, thus, the particular employee right protected by section 7
of the LMRA is that they have been wrongfully discharged because of their protected, concerted
activities.
As stated by the National Labor Relations Board (n.d.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, Drake and Keeler both had openly stated that it was way too cold and the air was quite
drafty at their workstations near the open overhead door however, the supervisor refused and was not
willing to close the overhead door because the majority of the other employees wanted to leave it
open. Therefore, Drake and Keeler discussed their problem and acted in a concerted manner and
walked off the job for the remainder of the day to contend the cold temperature at their workstations.
This action fully discussed with their supervisor in hopes some action would have been taken to
remedy the situation in regards to their working conditions and is thereby protected by Section 7.
Furthermore, Sec. 8. [§ 158.] (a) acknowledges that, It is an unfair labor practice for an employer to
interfere with, restrain, or coerce employees in the exercise of the rights guaranteed in section 7
[section 157]. All the more this section of the LMRA precisely prohibits the discharge, constructive
discharge, suspension, layoff, fail to recall from layoff, demote, discipline, or take any adverse action
against the employee because of their protected concerted activities. Since the action of Drake and
Keeler is a protected concerted activity, it is protected under Section 7 and the action of the employer
is prohibited under Section 8. Section 7 of NLRA assures the employees the rights and Section 8

Helicopter Parenting And Its Influence On Children s Life
Helicopter parenting has gained increasing awareness in popular media, academic literature, and the
general population. For example, recently, several popular parenting books have raised awareness
about parental over involvement and how it may be associated with negative outcomes. The term
helicopter parent was first used in a famous parenting book, Parents Teenagers by Dr. Haim Ginott in
1969, by teenagers who described their parents as hovering over them , like a helicopter. This term
refers to a parenting style that is over focused on children; being involved in a child s life in ways that
are over controlling and overprotective. Lester Smith defines helicopter or overprotective parents as
having a heightened surveillance of their children s lives (September 14, 2015), so that children are
never allowed to experience risk. This term is commonly applied to parents of college aged or high
school students who believe that their children are not capable of doing tasks alone, so they might call
a professor about their child s poor grades or manage their child s class schedule for them. Schiffrin et
al. (2013) emphasize children s need for autonomy and explain how this need increases over time as
they strive to become independent young adults (p. 529). Therefore, parents are recommended to
adjust their level of involvement and control to their child s developmental level (Schiffrin et al.,
2013, p. 529). However, many parents do not make this adjustment, and this

Nakae Chomin’s Discourse
Nakae Chomin s Discourse was published in 1887, a period that demarcated a crucial turning point in
Japan s politics and economy. The book itself suggested the great debate that the people of Japan were
having in deciding the future of the nation, and draws on Chomin s studies on Western politics in
France and his journalistic and political involvements in Japan.
The Discourse acts as a forum for the exploration of the political pathways that Japan could follow
following the Meiji Restoration in 1868. At a time when Japan had just begun to consolidate herself,
Chomin s Discourse was aimed at discussing Japan s long term trajectory through three imaginary
mouthpieces, The Gentleman of Western Learning , his opposition The Champion of ... Show more

Survival and prosperity of the nation are thus of utmost importance.
He poses a rhetoric question to the Gentleman, If anyone says that quarrelling is a vice and war an
absurdity, le me ask him to consider this: What can be done about the fact that individuals actually
possess vices? What can be done about the fact that they act absurdly? In short, what can be done
about reality? (Pg. 94). In short, he postulates that wars exist in the real world. And because of wars,
there was a need for armies. In addition, in an international scene where military was used as a basis
for negotiation (e.g. arrival of the Kurofune with Commodore Matthew Perry) and where the
European nations are not afraid of taking advantage of weaker nations (e.g. unequal treaties forced
onto Qing China after the two Opium Wars), militarization of Japan is now far more important than
before.
The Champion goes as far as to propose the invasion of a large country... vast and rich in natural
resources (Pg. 99) which will fuel the advancement of Japan at an unprecedented speed into a world
power. This case, very much aligned to realpolitik, illustrates that the Champion and Chomin both
understood that Japan held an insignificant role in international politics in the 19th century due to its
small size and limited resources, and that the policies that Japan makes should be directed towards
nullifying such structural

Imagery In Edith Wharton s Rattray
In 1902, Edith Wharton wrote, There are two ways of spreading light; to be / The candle or the mirror
that reflects it (qtd. in Rattray xx). The image of light commonly evokes connotations of good, truth,
hope, life, and purity. Wharton s statement expresses that while few individuals have the ability to
create such qualities in the lives of others, many people have the ability to spread another s light, and
thereby everyone has an equal ability to spread light. The statement, however, also elicits another
notion: oftentimes, the reflection of light creates a dispersal and refraction, analogous to how the
individual perception and interpretation of any idea alters its original meaning by way of a biased
refraction . Similarly, in Wharton s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through her use of light versus imagery specifically, Wharton demonstrates that society requires a
person to have a great amount of wealth relative to their social class, but also illustrates that detriment
to true happiness occurs in response to overwhelming dependence on and a large excess of money.
During an upper class party in The Age of Innocence, couples were already gliding over the floor
beyond: the light of the wax candles fell on revolving tulle skirts, on girlish heads wreathed with
modest blossoms, on the dashing aigrettes and ornaments of the young married women s coiffures
(21). Wharton depicts the luxury of the party goers clothing shown by the light of the wax candles to
demonstrate the absolute importance of spending inordinate sums of money on lavish clothes and
ornaments in order to associate with this tier of people. If not accepted by a high class social circle,
society relegates one only to interact with those of a much lower class and standard of living. Indeed,
Lily Bart, the protagonist in The House of Mirth, does not have access to quite enough money to stay
within this higher social circle of people, but she knew that she hated dinginess as much as her mother
had hated it, and to her last breath she meant to fight against it, dragging herself up again and again
above its flood till she gained the bright pinnacles of success which presented such a slippery surface
to her clutch (42). Wharton, by using dark imagery to portray Lily s perception of the lower class as
having nothing but dinginess, implies that that Lily believes the lower class inferior and their living
conditions intolerable. In addition, her willingness to

Soon after the onset of stroke, patients usually experience a major emotional turbulence due to loss of
motor, language, or cognitive capacities. The primary goal of art therapy in stroke rehabilitation is to
help patients process and readapt to the multiple aspects of this new situation. The case of a 51 yr old
male stroke patient is presented to illustrate the use of this therapeutic model.
Handbook of Rehab. Psychology:
Constraint induced (CI) movement therapy greatly increases the amount of use of an impaired upper
extremity in patients with chronic stroke by repeatedly practicing use of the stroke affected arm and
constraining use of the unaffected arm. This new approach to physical rehabilitation elaborated from
basic research in behavioral psychology and neuroscience. This chapter provides a brief exploration of
reasons why psychologists are not regularly involved in motor rehabilitation research and practice, a
discussion of the importance of basic research for progress in rehabilitation, and a sketch of the
contributions of basic behavioral psychology and neuroscience research to rehabilitation psychology.

Essay about The Not So Patriot Act
The Not So Patriotic Patriot Act On September 11, 2001 the United States was attacked by a terrorist
group on our own soil. On October 26, 2011 the US Government signed into law the Uniting and
Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism
Act (USA Patriot Act). Only one and a half months after we were attacked physically by a terrorist
group, our government decided that we would be better off with a lot less freedom in order to better
protect America from terrorist attacks in the future. Although this seemed like an obvious need in
2001, now almost ten years later there is little evidence supporting a need for such an Act. The bottom
line is that the Patriot Act allows the US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Section 213 was written into the Patriot Act as a way to sneak and peek locations before potential
criminals or evidence had a chance to be relocated. This would give law enforcement time to
completely search through someone s property either physically or electronically without their
knowledge of it. However, at some point, they were required to inform the party of their search. In
many cases, law enforcement works within a time limit during investigation of a case and Section 213
is intended to give law enforcement more leeway on how the fourth amendment is interpreted in
terrorist type cases. To sum up Section 213, agents, through very little proof of evidence, are able to
enter someone s house and do a full search of their property without any kind of notice. Obviously
when it is at the discretion of the officers, they will likely overuse this power to extend past just
possible terrorist attacks and call for the use of this section in other cases as well. Although there are
obvious issues with this ruling, Heather MacDonald in The Patriot Act Is No Slippery Slope argues
that this section is a critical part of the process of protecting Americans from terrorist attacks. She uses
an example of the FBI wanting to plumb Mohamed Atta s hard drive for evidence of a nascent terror
attack (Donald, p. 1). In the text she goes on to argue that by allowing Mr. Atta notice of the FBIs
intent to execute a search warrant on his property he would have

The Is The Second Most Used Electoral System
FPTP is the second most used electoral system worldwide, and in the UK it is used primarily in
general elections to reach a fully representative, democratic electoral system. In assessing whether we
should scrap FPTP, we must first establish what an electoral system ought to provide. The purpose of
an electoral system in the UK is to fairly elect representatives for the population to make up an
effective government, as we operate with a system of representative democracy. For an ideal
democracy to function, an electoral system that delivers a strong constituency link, genuine voter
choice, an effective government is fundamental. It is also important for a system to operate simply and
with transparency for the population. As Tom Stoppard once wrote, It s not the voting that s
democracy; it s the counting.
These factors are examined through the lenses of proportional representation and accountability, as
supporters of FPTP essentially disagree on whether accountability or proportionality is more necessary
in attaining democracy. FPTP is the system which provides the highest level of accountability of those
used in the UK, and therefore, it is the least proportional system. A strong constituency link is
important in a fully representative, democratic electoral system because it allows the population to be
properly represented by their local MP. On the whole, the FPTP system does enable an effective
constituency link between an elected MP and their constituents, as every

Discuss The Nature Of Evil In The Minister s Black Veil
Additionally, Hawthorne s use of the motif the nature of evil aids to convey the negative effects of
guilt and sin in both The Scarlet Letter and The Minister s Black Veil. In The Scarlet Letter, when
Chillingworth finds out about Hester s affair, his temperament immediately changes. Hawthorne
describes this as, Calm, gentle, passionless, as he appeared, there was yet, we fear, a quiet depth of
malice, hitherto latent, but active now, in this unfortunate old man, which led him to imagine a more
intimate revenge than any mortal had ever wreaked upon an enemy (209). Although the people of the
town view Hester s sins as evil, Chillingworth is actually the most evil of all. He is willing to do
anything for revenge, due to the sin Hester committed by having an affair with Dimmesdale. Harold

Chillingworth becomes so obsessed with the idea exposing Dimmesdale for his sins, he actually ends
up turning evil himself. Chillingworth displays the nature of evil by plotting against Dimmesdale and
dedicating his entire existence towards revenge, eventually driving him mad. Comparatively,
Hawthorne also uses the motif of evil in The Minister s Black Veil to display the negative effects of
guilt and sin. In The Minister s Black Veil, Reverend Hooper wears the veil to take on the evil nature
all of humanity possesses. In doing so, he begins to change as a person. People no longer want him at
their funerals or weddings, and he begins to reflect evil wherever he goes. This is shown at a wedding,

Bethel University Student Analysis
In a transitional setting, a university will have instructors who will lecture all semester long and have
you complete two tests; one mid term and a final exam. As well as have a set time and place for the
aforementioned lecture to take place. In some universities attendance is not a requirement. They want
you to pass the test in the middle and at the end of the year. You could be in a class with as many as
two hundred plus people which makes it almost impossible for the instructor to reach out to students

The Role Of Women During The Last Few Decades Based On...
The role of women has been greatly overseen in the last few decades based on traditional taboos. A
woman should be the spiritual leaders of the family and Catharine Beecher stood by it all. Beecher
was one of the most prominent advocator of women s education in the 1800 s. She took many steps
and chances to improve the amount of education a women should have inside and outside of the
household. Beecher believed that a woman should not just settle for cooking, cleaning and taking care
of the children. She encouraged women to expand their horizon and be a teacher inside and outside of
the home. Beecher was the driving force in development of teacher education and formal education
for American women. She kept the traditional curriculums, like arts and science, along with a few
domestic skills, (Beecher, 1846). Beecher, like other reformers such as Mary Lyon, wanted woman to
have a superior education. She encouraged women to teach Christianity values to their children. Many
girls wanted to learn and grow, however, many families believed that Beecher was getting a little too
carried away with her ideas, (Beecher, 1846). During this time frame, all races were kept separated.
Beecher seen education as an equalizer, however, only that individual from that particular race class
could speak upon what issues they face in society. Hostile political and social environments can deny
them basic rights to education but an education should be available to all, and that is exactly what

Discrimination And Discrimination In The Media
Tyra Jackson
LGBTQ Studies

Professor Dadas
Discrimination and Assimilation in the Media Media has come a long way since back in earlier times.
Media is a way many people in today s world entertain themselves, express themselves and shred light
to certain situations. In the event of the LGBTQ community there has been some improvements as far
as giving people a part of the LGBTQ community roles in television and movies. There has been an
increase in LGBTQ representation in the media since the late 1990s in film and television, but there
are still very few prominent LGBT characters in the mainstream media.
(www.criticalmediaproject.org) There was a study done by the GLAAD showing that only 17 of the
102 movies from major studios in 2013 featured lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters and,
of those 17, the majority were offensive and defamatory portrayals. (www.theguardian.com) LGBTQ
people were often portrayed in a stereotypical and outdated humous way that tended to make things
worse for the community than better. Recently there has been many shows and movies that have
portrayed members of the LGBTQ community in a positive light. But they also stereotype them in
certain areas of the show to shred light to certain issues. One of the many TV shows that fall into this
category is a TV show called The Fosters .
The Fosters is an American family drama series on the television channel Freeform. The first episode
aired June 3rd, 2013. Within

The Opening Scene Of The Book Acts Essay
In the opening scene of the book Acts, Luke records Jesus, who has recently risen, addressing the
Apostles. Before He ascended into heaven, He left His disciples with a commission: to be witnesses.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus stated, [Y]ou will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you
will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Contextually, these last words of Jesus were remarkable to the immediate audience, and His last words
are remarkable to those who properly interpret Acts 1:8. The context of Acts 1:8, the interpretation,
and the practically of Acts 1:8 reveal effective principles for Christians who desire to spread the
Gospel throughout the ends of the earth.
Acts is a historically accurate book that a human author wrote in a particular time, in a specific place,
and to a certain audience. Although there are people today who believe that the Bible magically
arrived and that it is full of fantasy stories, the truth is that God divinely used man to record actual
events. In Acts, He used Luke to record worth noting events. There are, according to Thomas L.
Constable, primarily two supporting arguments for Lukan s authorship in Acts: (1) internal evidence,
such as certain passages that use the first person plural that can refer to Luke, and (2) external
evidence. External evidence refers to the early church fathers that referred to Luke as the author of
Acts. God had divinely instilled a purpose for Luke to

The Deviation Of Bid Prices
deviation of bid prices (a commonly used measure of dispersion in literature), quality weighted BPD,

robustness of the measurement of BPD. We also note that measurement error is not a concern for all

4.3.2 Buyer Contracting Model Specification

experience and mean quality rating represents the average quality of the freelancers that a project
attracts. A buyer would have more high quality freelancers to choose from with a higher average
experience and mean rating, which may facilitate the buyer s contracting decision. Freelancer quality
dispersion is measured as the standard deviation of all freelancers rating (or experience), which
represents the diversity of choices a buyer has; thus, it is

Unconformity And Conformity
Fundamentally, so long as individuals are conditioned to become content with their spot in society,
they will never rebel. Furthermore, since the government does such an effective job at making it
impossible for individuals even imagine any other possible quality of life, they see whatever
inequality they face simply as a necessary price of civilization (Orwell 212). Moreover, as made
evident by the proletarian and Epsilon classes in 1984 and Brave New World a large class of the
people do not want to be cultured and are not interested in the higher life. For these people existence
on the lower, animal levels is perfectly satisfactory. Given food, drink, the company of their fellows,
sexual enjoyment, and plenty of noisy distractions from without, they are happy, (Varricchio) and are
therefore accepting of their unescapable social destiny (Huxley 26). What s more, because the masses
are so conditioned to accept their positions in society, they are also inclined to feel uncomfortable with
and take preventative measures against disobeying the system.
Humanity typically fears the unknown, and as such, individuals have a tendency to report to the
government they trust upon noticing someone they don t trust act apart from the status quo. People do
this out of regard for what they perceive to be their own safety and as a result, enforce conformity for
the government. This is precedented in Brave New World when Helmholtz Watson is reported to the
authorities by his own

Chapter two
Methodology
The first point of call was to have a clear and sharp understanding of the dissertation topic and this
was done through the use of online research as there is a vast amount of information that can be
collected in relation to integrating communities. This was then followed by the key significance to the
main objective which is gathering data. To help with the findings and analysis, the research has to be
focused more on areas where communities benefit through people of different backgrounds living
together and sharing basic commodities, these could be sharing a kitchen, communal gardens, open
spaces and even a bench in the public park.2 As there are quite a number of diverse people in the
community, a lot of information was collected from them through one on one discussion. Although the
information collected was not very satisfactory, care had to be taken as to select what to use. This was
also the issue with selecting case studies which deals specifically with sociable housing which in these
communities is widely known as co housing. The evidence collected from sources had to be carefully
selected and used accordingly. A model was then developed to assess how people of different
background can be incorporated through various substances. This was then implemented within
separate case studies and the results explored and analysed. The model was then tried on another
project to see if it works.
The method of research used in this thesis is by use

Certified Property Manager Paper
Finding a qualified company or individual agent to manage rental property is essential for
homeowners and investors interested in capturing maximum return on investment. Not every property
manager is certified. However, there are significant advantages to choosing a licensed professional.
What is a Certified Property Manager (CPM)?
Certification is a valuable asset for property managers. CPM status designates a rental partner as a
professional truly committed to excellent service with a focus on ethical treatment for all stakeholders
buyers, sellers, investors, tenants and company employees.
Each state has a unique set of rules that govern property management. For example, Virginia requires
both a Real Estate Brokers License and a Common Interest Community Managers License, while
Vermont doesn t require either to offer property management services. It is ... Show more content on

A certified management specialist helps owners identify changes in the market with access to current
financing terms, market price fluctuations and the status of competing properties in the area. This
ensures rent values are competitive, and allows investors looking to expand their portfolios insider
information about new listings as soon as they become available.
2. A CPM has resources to help owners continuously monitor asset performance. Whether it is state of
the art technology such as online access to maintenance work orders and rent collection through an
owners portal, or market comps to help owners evaluate rent prices, the property management team
should be able to guide owner decisions that boost revenue potential.
3. Certification courses include best practices training modules that teach agents how to market rental
property to maximize profit and control expenses. These skills mean the CPM understands when and
where to market each property, and how to make sure these activities comply with local, state and

Henry Fleming Quotes
Henry Fleming (the youth) is the main character in the book Red Badge of Courage. Henry enlists in
the Union Army during the US Civil War at a very young age and fights alongside other Union
soldiers in his first battle. However when faced with an immediate second battle Henry decides to run
and desert his unit. Henry is so tramatized by the dead and wounded soldiers that he sees during his
first conflict that he cannot accept walking straight into his own death. So he runs away as fast as he
can to save himself.
Henry fights in his first battle: Henry began to have second thoughts about fighting in the war as his
battalion got closer to their first battle. He thought that he must break from the ranks and harangue his
comrades. 1.

Zoot Suit Stereotypes And Stereotypes
Stereotypes are a form of prejudice everyone will once experience in their lifetime. Stereotypes are
centered around an individual s race, gender, social class, religion, and age. They have been known to
be elements people use to make judgments and subjectify people to one key feature. As Gordon
Allport states, To state the matter technically, a noun abstracts from a concrete reality some one
features and assembles different concrete realities only with respect to this one feature (364).
Mr.Allport s words can be summed up to say stereotypes have been used as key fundamentals to
associate one feature or aspect of a person with a group that represents it, typically in an unfavorable
way. Over the years, the media has poorly portrayed people from Latin America countries as low
income individuals who, based on their looks, are typically out of society s views of fitting in. With
this role assigned to them, they are presumably believed to have a life filled with crime due to their
appearance. These repeatedly wrongful display of representations makes it seems the only perception
people will receive from Latin America is that it s justifiable to treat us different because of our unique
looks.
I first became aware of this stereotype my senior year of high school in my Advanced Placement
English class while watching a 1981 movie adaption of Luis Valdez s screenplay Zoot Suit . We

Essay on The Swastika in MAUS
The Swastika in MAUS
The image of the swastika pervades Arthur Spiegelman s graphic novel MAUS. In a work where so
much of the Holocaust has been changed in some way after all, there are no humans in this version,
only cats, mice, dogs, and pigs we must wonder why Spiegelman chooses to retain this well known
emblem. To remove it entirely or replace it with another, invented symbol would completely disorient
the reader; but some might claim that this is the effect at which Spiegelman is aiming. I believe it is
not. Rather, Spiegelman uses the swastika to subtly remind the reader that while the guise in which
events are presented may be somewhat unfamiliar, the novel is still a narrative of the Holocaust.
The swastika, it has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But these changes help to make it more stern, more authoritarian, more evil a testament to Spiegelman
s ability to adapt this already emotionally loaded symbol.
It is with the coming of the swastika that the graphic novel becomes dark . I mean this in two ways.
First, the first chapter of the novel is rather light in its message, focusing on the beginning of the
relationship between Vladek and Anja. The swastika first appears on the frontispiece to the second
chapter, ironically titled The Honeymoon . After this point, the totalitarianism begins. The presence of
the swastika is strongest at the first time Vladek sees it. He states, on first seeing it, It was the
beginning of 1938 before the war hanging high in the center of town, it was a Nazi flag. Here was the
first time I saw, with my own eyes, the swastika. On the next page, the swastika becomes detached
from the flag and floats like an ominous moon on the horizon behind the scene of a pogrom.
Spiegelman here is milking the emotive power of the swastika for all that it is worth.
But perhaps the most interesting use of the swastika in MAUS is to be found towards the end of the
book. Anja and Vladek are attempting to hide when they come to a crossroads, and the roads meet in
the form of a swastika. Vladek tells Art: Anja and I didn t have where to go. We walked in the
direction of Sosnowiec but where to go?! It was nowhere we had

10 minutes till march, someone yelled. Eric was fuming with hatersted, but he packed up the rest of

There was going to be a massacre, and Dodd knew that was going to happen. Two hours later, the big
cannons began to fire. The 78th, the other Scottish regiment, was going to meet the Mattara troops.
The battle of Assaye had started. Eric and the rest of the 74th had been walking for over an hour under
cover of the ridgeline. Eric was the second line to enter the valley, but one of the first to see
movement. Eric shrugged away the thought of troops here, just a mountain goat he thought, just a
mountain goat. The Mattara force hiding in the valley should ve waited longer for more of the troops
to come in. Instead, the opened fire, just after the fourth row came in. Eric heard gunfire from both
sides of the valley, and saw where he was standing was a killing ground. The men all around him had
been shriveled down with bullets. Eric felt the smooth wind of a bullet go past his face, so he used his
training to fight against them. Men were firing all over the place, not aiming but shooting and
reloading as fast as they could. Eric tasted the salty gunpowder go down his throat when he kept
ripping cartridges open with his teeth as they taught him. He desperately needed a drink, but he kept
firing and reloading. It was a massacre around him. Men were dying left and right, files already on the
bodies and vultures and crows in the air. It would be a day of feasting for them.

If Beale Street Could Talk Struggles
Baldwin uses personal struggles throughout his works to show that times of suffering are the bridge
that leads to happiness and salvation by promoting the idea that through turmoil, fulfillment and
growth can be attained. Throughout his novels, his characters are charged with the subconscious task
of attempting to make lives in spite of suffering that affect them and their loved ones. In If Beale

affirm their humanity (Welsh). In order to prove their love for one another, they fight against social
oppression and the power of the government to rightfully save the protagonist s fiance. Her mother

Black Humor in America
Black Humor
One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black humor. Black humor
often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war, murder,
insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires
some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of
humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one liners.
However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a tragic event.
One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it involves race. Black humor is not a
form of African American humor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he was not aware that
it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch 22, Computer). In the story, Catch 22 is a military rule that
employs circular logic. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat missions:
One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert
one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for his
life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one
who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying
missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them simply by asking.
(Catch 22, Computer)
The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to show
the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse
Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel
as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting
point (Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut s downplay of human
mortality. He uses the phrase so it goes whenever dying is mentioned. Much of

Eisenhower had many accomplishments during his terms. They include generating the U.S.

One of the key elements of Eisenhower s legislative style was to keep up a great relationship with the

that important, but harmful to be an effective leader. He hoped that personal acquaintance would help

Autonomy in Medicine
Autonomy in Medicine

Dr. Schlitz
Autonomy is the personal rule of the self that is free from both controlling interferences by others and
from personal limitations that prevent meaningful choice (Pantilat, 2008). Autonomous individuals act
intentionally, with understanding, and without controlling influences. Respect for autonomy is one of
the fundamental guidelines of clinical ethics. Autonomy in medicine is not simply allowing patients to
make their own decisions. Physicians have an obligation to create the conditions necessary for
autonomous choice in others. For a physician, respect for autonomy includes respecting an individual

For the majority of their lives patients seek treatment from a family physician that has a general
knowledge of their health status, behaviors, and family background. However, once patients reach the
age where multiple ailments require the consultation of several specialists, care can become
fragmented. The primary physician, who presumably knows the patient best, begins to play a smaller
role in deciding treatments and consulting the patient s family on advance directives. This
fragmentation and discontinuity of care is pervasive once the patient reaches the end of life, and thus
helps explain why treatment decisions at the end of life often differ from the wishes of the family and
even the patient.
The relationship between a physician and his or her patient is inherently driven by outcomes. By
default, a physician is trained to cure or mitigate the effects of the patient s illness until natural death.
However, the instinctive behavior of physicians at the end of life can result in more harm by
encouraging advanced treatments that reduce the quality of life in a patient s remaining days.
Evidence has demonstrated that this leads to greater dissatisfaction among patients and their families,
and it results in unnecessarily high instances of death in hospital

In The Underdogs written by Mariano Azuela, the protagonist, Demetrio Macias is symbolized as the
fuel of the Mexican Revolution. Heroes like Macias gave hope to the oppressed people of Mexico by
fighting for what they felt they truly deserved, but, ironically, later becomes what he was fighting
against. He does show great leadership and determination to oppress Pancho Villa s army. Pancho
Villa, the dictator of Mexico during this revolutionary time, also shows prolific leadership qualities
and care for his people; much like Demetrio Macias. However, at times Villa can be a ferocious
general who destroyed villiages and killed innocent victims, he shows his compassion who helped
those in need and rescued orphans providing them with food, education, and a home. Pancho Villa was

Jules Ferry s Speech On Imperialism
According to the content section of this chapter Imperialism, means, the subjugation, domination, and
exploitation of almost the entire globe to the economic and political needs of one region (Europe), a
development unprecedented in human history. To a neutral viewer this may appear like a beneficial
idea. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Imperialism was seen as a benefit to some and others did not
see it as this. Many European nations such as Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, as well as
some other nations were gaining land. Many people had opposing views regarding imperialism. Those
who were in favor of imperialism often argued that it was beneficial based on nationalism, economic
gains, the fervor missions of the Christians, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jules Ferry s idea about making the trade better is a great idea, but unfortunately would not work like
he thinks. The other country would not be willingly let imperialists take over. Jule s speech continues
with a response from M. Camille Pelletan, an honorable audience member, he states What is this
civilization which you impose with can non balls? What is it but another form of barbarism? Don t
these populations, these inferior races, have the same rights as you? Aren t they masters of their own
houses? (258). Pelletan jeers and condemns Ferry, but Ferry sticks to his racist ideas and continues to
put the inferior races under him. Ferry continues to talk about the superiority he thinks Europe has
over everyone. He states, Gentlemen, I must speak from a higher and more truthful plane. (258). Ferry
is showing that he thinks he is superior to those he is speaking to and sees himself as a superior to
others and that he is above the inferiors. He then continues to make it clear that superiors have control
over the inferiors, It must be stated openly that, in effect, superior races have rights over inferior races.
(258). Throughout his speech, Ferry tries to show what the positives of Imperialism is, but does not
acknowledge the negatives for the expansion and take over of certain territories.
The imperialists tried to make arguments that they were bringing only

Reebok Pump Synthesis Essay
Reebok has advertised their new shoe, called the Pump. In doing so they use diction, sentence
structure (syntax), and visual images to appeal the Pump to readers. This makes the ad stand out. It
makes the ad memorable. The ad benefits from them because they are used in communicating the ad s
message. The ad s message is that the Pump is perfect for any sport, and any training, no matter how
vigorous. The ad has unique diction choices. Diction is the word choices used in the ad, which helps to
communicate the ad s message. It uses personification, an allusion, connotation and denotation.
Personification is used in the big sentence in the upper middle of the front side, ...shoe that adapts to
you. The effect of the personification is that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The visual imagery in the ad are the various pictures in the ad, and anything that is not written out. An
example of visual imagery within the ad is the picture on the front right side of JJ Watt dragging a sled
while wearing the Pump shoes. This picture gives added meaning to the shoes. Usually, such drills as
the one depicted are performed with cleats by football players for the added grip provided. However,
in the picture in the ad, JJ Watt does the drill with a pair of the Pump shoes. Because he is doing it in
those shoes, this example of visual imagery is showing how these shoes, the Pump, can replace cleats
because of how good they are and how good grip they provide. That their grip is incredibly good and
reliable, thus making the shoe, the Pump, appear even better. This example of visual imagery then
contributes to the author s purpose. Because it shows how these shoes can be as good as cleats with
their great and reliable grip, and maybe even better than cleats because JJ Watt is using them for his
shoes in the drill rather than using cleats, it enforces the statement that the shoes the Pump are perfect.
The Pump is perfect for whatever the reader needs them for, no matter what it is. Visual imagery is
also used on the front side, being more prominent on the left side, but it goes across the whole page. It
is the fire. The fire is an example of visual imagery, making the entire ad seem much more intense. It
makes things seem to get heated up, as if you were using the Pump in a workout and you were
working really hard. This example of visual imagery contributes to the author s purpose. Sports can be
intense and they usually are intense, much like the fire depicted in the visual imagery example. This
starts to accelerate the blood flow, as if something is about to happen or you want to do something,
like work out or run. This leads to the question of what you should wear while doing that, and the ad
suggests that you wear the

Personal Philosophy of Guidance
Ledesma, Maureen Antonette B.
M.Ed in Guidance Year 1
GUIDANCE (EDCO 201)
Prof. Evelyn Alobba
A Personal Philosophy of Guidance
My personal philosophy of guidance, as a future counselor someday, is to guide an individual live a
life of happiness and contentment in the midst of a discontent world. For an individual to achieve this,
I will help her realize and achieve his or her full potentials through growing in spirituality. Spirituality,
for me, is having and maintaining a personal relationship with the Creator God. As a Christian, I
believe spirituality is very significant in an individual s life. Personally, my own spirituality helped me
become the person that I am today. It has helped me focus on the things ... Show more content on

It will also be a renewing and refreshing kind of experience for him/her since they are encouraged to
trust in Someone that is far greater than we could ever imagine. It is also in spirituality that we realize
our own purpose and see the true meaning of life and eventually learning to live a life of contentment
and happiness. The process of counseling in this aspect should start with a needs assessment in the
clients spirituality. Asking open ended questions is a good way to begin exploring about the clients
needs. In this way, the counselor can keep track on the spiritual growth and maturity of a client if ever
he/she has one. This is also important for the counselor to have a gist of the over all concern of the
client as well as to have an awareness of the client s spiritual outlook. It is also important for a
counselor to explore with a client on how they view life in a spiritual context. In this way, it may assist
the counseling process tremendously. Specifically, when a counselor wants to specialize in Christian
counseling, he/she should be aware of how they deal with their clients. One perfect example is the use
and timing of employing biblical scriptures to the clients to aid in their healing. This example may
provide comfort to what the client is suffering from and will immediately open an avenue of hope for
the client. As the counseling progresses, the counselor is expected to remain interested and

Seminal Replication on Attention Blink
This study was a seminal replication on attention blink similar to the one done by Raymond et al, in a
rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. This study predicted that there would be a higher
accuracy for identifying the first target, T1 and lower accuracy for the second target, T2 depending on
the lag, given that T1 was accurately reported. 193 students participated in the experiment. This
experiment was a part of the course requirement. There was a stream of 19 letters, each lasting for 100
ms. The target letters, T1 and/or T2, to be identified were either a J or a K or both from the stream of
19 letters presented. In this study, a total of 60 trials were conducted for each participant. For T1, there
were 30 J and 30 K targets. T2 comprised of 24 J, 24 K and 12 null targets. The participants were
asked to decide whether they saw the letters J, K, both or neither following the RSVP stream. They
were asked to do so by using a button click mechanism. At the end of all the trials, the participants
were presented with a summary of their performance report. It was observed that the percentage of T1
reported does not vary significantly as a function of lag. Also, the percentage of T2 reported varied as
a function of lag. At greater lag positions, it was seen that the percentage of T2 reported goes above
that of T1.

Students will need to provide a folder to keep any work, as well as login information. This needs to be
brought to class each week.
Students will be required to have Internet access, whether that be through home use or through public
wi fi such as a library. Much of the work in the class is completed at school, however several
assignments do have work at home as needed.
Classroom Expectations
Students will enter the classroom in a quiet and orderly fashion. 6th 8th grade students will usually
start at their computer stations. Students will exit in the same fashion when leaving the lab.
Each student will have an assigned computer station and headphones and treat these with care.
Headphones should be bagged and placed in the bin at the end of class.
Students will work on assignments independently unless otherwise specified.
If students have a question, a raised hand will alert the teacher to the need. Leaving your computer
station is not an appropriate way to seek help.
Students are to remain on task with the materials given. Searching the Internet, going to sites not
approved, checking personal email, or spending time on other work outside of computers without
permission is a breach of the Acceptable Use Policy of Our Lady of Victory Handbook, and will be
assessed as a disciplinary concern as well as a loss of computer time during class.
Students will close all programs, save all work, and leave their computer on the home screen or
desktop at the end of the class.

  • 2. Employee Rights Protected From Employer Discrimination According to Walsh (2013) it is acknowledged that, employee rights protected from employer discrimination in Section 7 of the NLRA included the right to form or join a union, bargain collectively, or engage in other concerted activity for mutual aid and protection. Furthermore, the U.S. Constitution permits Congress whose operations have the capability to vitally affect interstate commerce. Therefore, since Drake and Keeler s employer meets the criterion for coverage under the LMRA by engaging in interstate commerce, thus, the particular employee right protected by section 7 of the LMRA is that they have been wrongfully discharged because of their protected, concerted activities. Essentially, Drake and Keeler both had openly stated that it was way too cold and the air was quite drafty at their workstations near the open overhead door however, the supervisor refused and was not willing to close the overhead door because the majority of the other employees wanted to leave it open. Therefore, Drake and Keeler discussed their problem and acted in a concerted manner and walked off the job for the remainder of the day to contend the cold temperature at their workstations. This action fully discussed with their supervisor in hopes some action would have been taken to remedy the situation in regards to their working conditions and is thereby protected by Section 7. Furthermore, Sec. 8. • 3. Helicopter Parenting And Its Influence On Children s Life Helicopter parenting has gained increasing awareness in popular media, academic literature, and the general population. For example, recently, several popular parenting books have raised awareness about parental over involvement and how it may be associated with negative outcomes. The term helicopter parent was first used in a famous parenting book, Parents Teenagers by Dr. Haim Ginott in 1969, by teenagers who described their parents as hovering over them , like a helicopter. This term refers to a parenting style that is over focused on children; being involved in a child s life in ways that are over controlling and overprotective. Lester Smith defines helicopter or overprotective parents as having a heightened surveillance of their children s lives (September 14, 2015), so that children are never allowed to experience risk. This term is commonly applied to parents of college aged or high school students who believe that their children are not capable of doing tasks alone, so they might call a professor about their child s poor grades or manage their child s class schedule for them. Schiffrin et al. (2013) emphasize children s need for autonomy and explain how this need increases over time as they strive to become independent young adults (p. 529). Therefore, parents are recommended to adjust their level of involvement and control to their child s developmental level (Schiffrin et al., 2013, p. 529). However, many parents do not make this adjustment, and this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Nakae Chomin’s Discourse Nakae Chomin s Discourse was published in 1887, a period that demarcated a crucial turning point in Japan s politics and economy. The book itself suggested the great debate that the people of Japan were having in deciding the future of the nation, and draws on Chomin s studies on Western politics in France and his journalistic and political involvements in Japan. The Discourse acts as a forum for the exploration of the political pathways that Japan could follow following the Meiji Restoration in 1868. At a time when Japan had just begun to consolidate herself, Chomin s Discourse was aimed at discussing Japan s long term trajectory through three imaginary mouthpieces, The Gentleman of Western Learning , his opposition The Champion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Survival and prosperity of the nation are thus of utmost importance. He poses a rhetoric question to the Gentleman, If anyone says that quarrelling is a vice and war an absurdity, le me ask him to consider this: What can be done about the fact that individuals actually possess vices? What can be done about the fact that they act absurdly? In short, what can be done about reality? (Pg. 94). In short, he postulates that wars exist in the real world. And because of wars, there was a need for armies. In addition, in an international scene where military was used as a basis for negotiation (e.g. arrival of the Kurofune with Commodore Matthew Perry) and where the European nations are not afraid of taking advantage of weaker nations (e.g. unequal treaties forced onto Qing China after the two Opium Wars), militarization of Japan is now far more important than before. The Champion goes as far as to propose the invasion of a large country... vast and rich in natural resources (Pg. 99) which will fuel the advancement of Japan at an unprecedented speed into a world power. This case, very much aligned to realpolitik, illustrates that the Champion and Chomin both understood that Japan held an insignificant role in international politics in the 19th century due to its small size and limited resources, and that the policies that Japan makes should be directed towards nullifying such structural ... • 6. Imagery In Edith Wharton s Rattray In 1902, Edith Wharton wrote, There are two ways of spreading light; to be / The candle or the mirror that reflects it (qtd. in Rattray xx). The image of light commonly evokes connotations of good, truth, hope, life, and purity. Wharton s statement expresses that while few individuals have the ability to create such qualities in the lives of others, many people have the ability to spread another s light, and thereby everyone has an equal ability to spread light. The statement, however, also elicits another notion: oftentimes, the reflection of light creates a dispersal and refraction, analogous to how the individual perception and interpretation of any idea alters its original meaning by way of a biased refraction . Similarly, in Wharton s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through her use of light versus imagery specifically, Wharton demonstrates that society requires a person to have a great amount of wealth relative to their social class, but also illustrates that detriment to true happiness occurs in response to overwhelming dependence on and a large excess of money. During an upper class party in The Age of Innocence, couples were already gliding over the floor beyond: the light of the wax candles fell on revolving tulle skirts, on girlish heads wreathed with modest blossoms, on the dashing aigrettes and ornaments of the young married women s coiffures (21). Wharton depicts the luxury of the party goers clothing shown by the light of the wax candles to demonstrate the absolute importance of spending inordinate sums of money on lavish clothes and ornaments in order to associate with this tier of people. If not accepted by a high class social circle, society relegates one only to interact with those of a much lower class and standard of living. Indeed, Lily Bart, the protagonist in The House of Mirth, does not have access to quite enough money to stay within this higher social circle of people, but she knew that she hated dinginess as much as her mother had hated it, and to her last breath she meant to fight against it, dragging herself up again and again above its flood till she gained the bright pinnacles of success which presented such a slippery surface to her clutch (42). Wharton, by using dark imagery to portray Lily s perception of the lower class as having nothing but dinginess, implies that that Lily believes the lower class inferior and their living conditions intolerable. • 8. Essay about The Not So Patriot Act The Not So Patriotic Patriot Act On September 11, 2001 the United States was attacked by a terrorist group on our own soil. On October 26, 2011 the US Government signed into law the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (USA Patriot Act). Only one and a half months after we were attacked physically by a terrorist group, our government decided that we would be better off with a lot less freedom in order to better protect America from terrorist attacks in the future. Although this seemed like an obvious need in 2001, now almost ten years later there is little evidence supporting a need for such an Act. The bottom line is that the Patriot Act allows the US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Section 213 was written into the Patriot Act as a way to sneak and peek locations before potential criminals or evidence had a chance to be relocated. This would give law enforcement time to completely search through someone s property either physically or electronically without their knowledge of it. However, at some point, they were required to inform the party of their search. In many cases, law enforcement works within a time limit during investigation of a case and Section 213 is intended to give law enforcement more leeway on how the fourth amendment is interpreted in terrorist type cases. To sum up Section 213, agents, through very little proof of evidence, are able to enter someone s house and do a full search of their property without any kind of notice. Obviously when it is at the discretion of the officers, they will likely overuse this power to extend past just possible terrorist attacks and call for the use of this section in other cases as well. Although there are obvious issues with this ruling, Heather MacDonald in The Patriot Act Is No Slippery Slope argues that this section is a critical part of the process of protecting Americans from terrorist attacks. She uses an example of the FBI wanting to plumb Mohamed Atta s hard drive for evidence of a nascent terror attack (Donald, p. 1). In the text she goes on to argue that by allowing Mr. Atta notice of the FBIs intent to execute a search warrant on his property he would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Is The Second Most Used Electoral System FPTP is the second most used electoral system worldwide, and in the UK it is used primarily in general elections to reach a fully representative, democratic electoral system. In assessing whether we should scrap FPTP, we must first establish what an electoral system ought to provide. The purpose of an electoral system in the UK is to fairly elect representatives for the population to make up an effective government, as we operate with a system of representative democracy. For an ideal democracy to function, an electoral system that delivers a strong constituency link, genuine voter choice, an effective government is fundamental. It is also important for a system to operate simply and with transparency for the population. As Tom Stoppard once wrote, It s not the voting that s democracy; it s the counting. These factors are examined through the lenses of proportional representation and accountability, as supporters of FPTP essentially disagree on whether accountability or proportionality is more necessary in attaining democracy. FPTP is the system which provides the highest level of accountability of those used in the UK, and therefore, it is the least proportional system. A strong constituency link is important in a fully representative, democratic electoral system because it allows the population to be properly represented by their local MP. On the whole, the FPTP system does enable an effective constituency link between an elected MP and their constituents, as every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discuss The Nature Of Evil In The Minister s Black Veil Additionally, Hawthorne s use of the motif the nature of evil aids to convey the negative effects of guilt and sin in both The Scarlet Letter and The Minister s Black Veil. In The Scarlet Letter, when Chillingworth finds out about Hester s affair, his temperament immediately changes. Hawthorne describes this as, Calm, gentle, passionless, as he appeared, there was yet, we fear, a quiet depth of malice, hitherto latent, but active now, in this unfortunate old man, which led him to imagine a more intimate revenge than any mortal had ever wreaked upon an enemy (209). A woman should be the spiritual leaders of the family and Catharine Beecher stood by it all. Beecher was one of the most prominent advocator of women s education in the 1800 s. She took many steps and chances to improve the amount of education a women should have inside and outside of the household. Beecher believed that a woman should not just settle for cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. She encouraged women to expand their horizon and be a teacher inside and outside of the home. Beecher was the driving force in development of teacher education and formal education for American women. She kept the traditional curriculums, like arts and science, along with a few domestic skills, (Beecher, 1846). Beecher, like other reformers such as Mary Lyon, wanted woman to have a superior education. She encouraged women to teach Christianity values to their children. Many girls wanted to learn and grow, however, many families believed that Beecher was getting a little too carried away with her ideas, (Beecher, 1846). During this time frame, all races were kept separated. Media is a way many people in today s world entertain themselves, express themselves and shred light to certain situations. In the event of the LGBTQ community there has been some improvements as far as giving people a part of the LGBTQ community roles in television and movies. There has been an increase in LGBTQ representation in the media since the late 1990s in film and television, but there are still very few prominent LGBT characters in the mainstream media. (www.criticalmediaproject.org) There was a study done by the GLAAD showing that only 17 of the 102 movies from major studios in 2013 featured lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters and, of those 17, the majority were offensive and defamatory portrayals. Before He ascended into heaven, He left His disciples with a commission: to be witnesses. In Acts 1:8, Jesus stated, [Y]ou will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Contextually, these last words of Jesus were remarkable to the immediate audience, and His last words are remarkable to those who properly interpret Acts 1:8. The context of Acts 1:8, the interpretation, and the practically of Acts 1:8 reveal effective principles for Christians who desire to spread the Gospel throughout the ends of the earth. Acts is a historically accurate book that a human author wrote in a particular time, in a specific place, and to a certain audience. Although there are people today who believe that the Bible magically arrived and that it is full of fantasy stories, the truth is that God divinely used man to record actual events. In Acts, He used Luke to record worth noting events. There are, according to Thomas L. Constable, primarily two supporting arguments for Lukan s authorship in Acts: (1) internal evidence, such as certain passages that use the first person plural that can refer to Luke, and (2) external evidence. External evidence refers to the early church fathers that referred to Luke as the author of Acts. God had divinely instilled a purpose for Luke to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Unconformity And Conformity Fundamentally, so long as individuals are conditioned to become content with their spot in society, they will never rebel. Furthermore, since the government does such an effective job at making it impossible for individuals even imagine any other possible quality of life, they see whatever inequality they face simply as a necessary price of civilization (Orwell 212). Moreover, as made evident by the proletarian and Epsilon classes in 1984 and Brave New World a large class of the people do not want to be cultured and are not interested in the higher life. For these people existence on the lower, animal levels is perfectly satisfactory. Given food, drink, the company of their fellows, sexual enjoyment, and plenty of noisy distractions from without, they are happy, (Varricchio) and are therefore accepting of their unescapable social destiny (Huxley 26). What s more, because the masses are so conditioned to accept their positions in society, they are also inclined to feel uncomfortable with and take preventative measures against disobeying the system. Humanity typically fears the unknown, and as such, individuals have a tendency to report to the government they trust upon noticing someone they don t trust act apart from the status quo. Ethnicity and Exclusion through Space Chapter two Methodology The first point of call was to have a clear and sharp understanding of the dissertation topic and this was done through the use of online research as there is a vast amount of information that can be collected in relation to integrating communities. This was then followed by the key significance to the main objective which is gathering data. To help with the findings and analysis, the research has to be focused more on areas where communities benefit through people of different backgrounds living together and sharing basic commodities, these could be sharing a kitchen, communal gardens, open spaces and even a bench in the public park.2 As there are quite a number of diverse people in the community, a lot of information was collected from them through one on one discussion. Although the information collected was not very satisfactory, care had to be taken as to select what to use. This was also the issue with selecting case studies which deals specifically with sociable housing which in these communities is widely known as co housing. The evidence collected from sources had to be carefully selected and used accordingly. A model was then developed to assess how people of different background can be incorporated through various substances. This was then implemented within separate case studies and the results explored and analysed. The model was then tried on another project to see if it works. Stereotypes are centered around an individual s race, gender, social class, religion, and age. They have been known to be elements people use to make judgments and subjectify people to one key feature. As Gordon Allport states, To state the matter technically, a noun abstracts from a concrete reality some one features and assembles different concrete realities only with respect to this one feature (364). Mr.Allport s words can be summed up to say stereotypes have been used as key fundamentals to associate one feature or aspect of a person with a group that represents it, typically in an unfavorable way. Over the years, the media has poorly portrayed people from Latin America countries as low income individuals who, based on their looks, are typically out of society s views of fitting in. With this role assigned to them, they are presumably believed to have a life filled with crime due to their appearance. These repeatedly wrongful display of representations makes it seems the only perception people will receive from Latin America is that it s justifiable to treat us different because of our unique looks. But these changes help to make it more stern, more authoritarian, more evil a testament to Spiegelman s ability to adapt this already emotionally loaded symbol. It is with the coming of the swastika that the graphic novel becomes dark . I mean this in two ways. First, the first chapter of the novel is rather light in its message, focusing on the beginning of the relationship between Vladek and Anja. The swastika first appears on the frontispiece to the second chapter, ironically titled The Honeymoon . After this point, the totalitarianism begins. The presence of the swastika is strongest at the first time Vladek sees it. He states, on first seeing it, It was the beginning of 1938 before the war hanging high in the center of town, it was a Nazi flag. Here was the first time I saw, with my own eyes, the swastika. On the next page, the swastika becomes detached from the flag and floats like an ominous moon on the horizon behind the scene of a pogrom. Spiegelman here is milking the emotive power of the swastika for all that it is worth. But perhaps the most interesting use of the swastika in MAUS is to be found towards the end of the book. Anja and Vladek are attempting to hide when they come to a crossroads, and the roads meet in the form of a swastika. Vladek tells Art: Anja and I didn t have where to go. • 28. Black Humor in America Black Humor One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black humor. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it involves race. Black humor is not a form of African American humor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he was not aware that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch 22, Computer). In the story, Catch 22 is a military rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat missions: One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them simply by asking. (Catch 22, Computer) The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point (Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut s downplay of human mortality. He uses the phrase so it goes whenever dying is mentioned. Much of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the majority of their lives patients seek treatment from a family physician that has a general knowledge of their health status, behaviors, and family background. However, once patients reach the age where multiple ailments require the consultation of several specialists, care can become fragmented. The primary physician, who presumably knows the patient best, begins to play a smaller role in deciding treatments and consulting the patient s family on advance directives. This fragmentation and discontinuity of care is pervasive once the patient reaches the end of life, and thus helps explain why treatment decisions at the end of life often differ from the wishes of the family and even the patient. The relationship between a physician and his or her patient is inherently driven by outcomes. By default, a physician is trained to cure or mitigate the effects of the patient s illness until natural death. However, the instinctive behavior of physicians at the end of life can result in more harm by encouraging advanced treatments that reduce the quality of life in a patient s remaining days.
