Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was an 8th century Persian mathematician, astronomer and geographer who worked in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. He developed the concept of the algorithm and the word "algebra" comes from the title of his book on the subject. Al-Khwarizmi made important contributions to astronomy, mathematics and calendar systems. He wrote extensively on topics including astronomy, astrology, calendars and mathematics. Al-Khwarizmi died in Baghdad in 850.
