Average velocity is calculated as the change in position over a time interval, while instantaneous velocity provides the velocity exactly at a point by measuring over an infinitesimally small interval of time approaching that point.
Motion in a straight line(part 1)
1) Motion is defined as a change in an object's position over time. It can be linear, circular, or oscillatory.
2) Mechanics studies the motion and forces on objects. It includes kinematics which describes motion, statics which considers forces on stationary objects, and dynamics which considers forces causing motion.
3) One dimensional motion involves change in one coordinate, two dimensional in two coordinates, and three dimensional in all three coordinates. Rectilinear motion follows a straight line path while circular motion follows a circular path.

- 2. Within the scope of the study of motion are many different concepts. Scope of motion 2
- 3. Displacement While distance and displacement are commonly used interchangeably, it is important to note that displacement is a vector quantity that describes a change in position as illustrated by the Pythagorean theorem. 3
- 4. Velocity • When a position changes in a certain amount of time we have motion. • The rate of that change is called velocity. • It is represented by the equation v=d/t. 4
- 5. Acceleration • When an object's velocity changes, the rate of that change is acceleration. • Acceleration is represented by the equation: a=v/t 5
- 6. Motion in two dimensions • Objects in motion rarely move in one or two dimensions. • For introductory physics we will consider motion in two dimensions. 6
- 7. Two dimensional motion examples: Trajectories or ballistic motion 7
- 8. Two dimensional motion examples: Rotation- complex enough to study separately 8
- 9. Equations for two dimensional motion with acceleration • Each equation the student to one unknown. • Equations can be solved simultaneously to solve for two unknowns. 9
