 Mediterranean Climate
- Introduction
- Climatic Factors
 Continental Climate
- Introduction
- Climatic Factors
A Mediterranean climate is the climate typical
of the Mediterranean Basin, and is a particular
variety of subtropical climate.
This type of climate is found in:
-Areas around the Mediterranean Sea
-California
-Western and Southern Australia
-South-western South Africa
-Sections of Central Asia
-Central Chile
The majority of the regions with Mediterranean climates have
relatively mild winters and very warm summers. However winter
and summer temperatures can vary greatly between different
regions with a Mediterranean climate.
SUMMER-
It is between December and February
Maximum daily temperatures average between 25.1 and 25.8
degree Celcius
WINTER-
It is between June and August
Maximum daily temperatures average between 16.2 and 17.7
degree Celcius
-Mediterranean climate is a fairly dry climate.
-Almost no rain falls during the summer, so
most of the rain falls during the cooler winter.
-The summer experiences cold ocean currents
that bring dry air and no precipitation.
-During the winter the currents shift and warmer
moist air brings rain to these areas.
-Mediterranean climates receive around 29” of
annual rainfall.
 In the above bar graph, we can see that
throughout the year humidity is more in the
morning as compared to afternoon.
 In the following bar graph, we see that
throughout the year wind speed is more in
the afternoon as compared to morning.
 From January to April, there is vast difference
between morning and afternoon wind speeds.
 From May to July, there is considerably less
difference between morning and afternoon
wind speeds.
 From August to December, there is again a
vast difference between morning and
afternoon wind speeds.
 Continental climate is found in the interior of
the continents between the 30 and 60 degree
latitudes, but usually above the 40 degree
line.
 40 degrees north of the equator means less
direct sunlight and therefore less warmth.
 This climate is mainly found in the Northern
Hemisphere since there are no major
landmasses in the Southern Hemisphere
 Continental climate has a wide range of
temperatures, which means low cold
temperatures and high warm temperatures.
 Summer month temperatures average about
71 degrees Fahrenheit and winter months
usually average 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
 The main reason for the temperatures of
continental climate is latitude.
 Continental climate is not always humid but
has enough precipitation to not be
considered arid or semi-arid.
 Between 20”-50” of rain falls in this climatic
zone.
 The moisture is evaporated from the land at a
slope, regular pace, which explains why
precipitation falls regularly throughout all
four seasons.
 TEMPERATURE
From January the temperature starts rising,
reaches its highest during July and then starts
decreasing to a minimum of -10 degree
Celcius in December.
 PRECITATION
From January to May, precipitation increases.
In June and July, precipitation is almost equal
and maximum. From August, it starts falling
and is minimum in December.
 In this graph, both temperature and
precipitation have been shown together.
