Masonry materials can be used to create buildings with significantly less impact on the environment than many other materials, often yielding immediate and measurable results toward sustainability. Brick, stone, tile, terrazzo, marble, and plaster are known for their beauty and performance, and these same materials also play an important role in addressing the requirements for up to 52 points in LEED v.3 certified projects. This seminar will identify the specific contributions that masonry makes in the area of Sustainable Sites, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation & Design. The program will also address the new requirements in LEED v. 3 and how they differ from those in LEED v. 2.2.

The focus of the seminar is to give participants a clearer understanding of the interrelationship in masonry buildings between materials, architecture, engineering and construction. Seemingly simple decisions can dramatically affect the building and understanding options available in materials, design and construction methods can result in more efficient and cost effective structures. Taught using a “Tips” format, the seminar highlights areas where proper understanding of masonry - from architectural and engineering design to materials to construction methods - can result in better completed buildings. Ways to use existing materials more effectively, explanations of the effect of one selection on another, discussions of new materials and current code and specification provisions are included.
What happens if the mortar or grout is allowed to freeze? When is it appropriate to enclose and heat masonry construction? How does protecting for cold weather affect a project budget? These questions and more are covered in this program discussing typical methods of preventing cold weather masonry construction problems and how to deal with them if they occur. Included is a discussion of how to interpret and correctly apply the code provisions for successful cold weather construction, and what innovative techniques are used by contractors to mitigate the effects of cold weather.

Finally, the program addresses in detail the life cycle cost benefits of masonry, and what goes into training an abundant skilled workforce of qualified bricklayers and contractors.

This course will examine design and installation considerations for large format ceramic and porcelain tile (LFT). It will define the sizing categories for tile, and will address opportunities and constraints unique to LFT as defined by ANSI standards and TCNA methods. It will address bonding pattern recommendations, acceptable warpage and lippage, and acceptable minimums &variation in grout joint width. The program will also take a close look at substrate preparation for LFT including substrate flatness tolerances. Finally, the program will provide information on the newly defined category of thin Gauged Porcelain Tile (GPT) and thin GPT slabs/panels, including an update on the new ANSI standards currently for this product category.
Attendees will develop an understanding of the various types of tile, setting methods, system components, design and installation considerations, specialty systems, and quality assurance. Attendees will learn how to use applicable codes and standards to design and specify tile work meeting minimum requirements and best practices. The program will emphasize design and installation requirements for large format tile, including substrate preparation. The program will also look at the new standards for coefficient of friction (COF). There will be a discussion of sustainable attributes of tile. The program will also address the new recommended specification language for installer qualifications appearing in the TCNA Handbook and MasterSpec.
This program takes a detailed look at a masonry cavity wall’s moisture management system, analyzing the components of air space, flashing, weeps, air barrier, mortar joints, drainage accessories, the masonry materials themselves, and perhaps the most critical component to a watertight wall, workmanship procedures. It will look at details and conditions throughout the wall that present unique opportunities for moisture intrusion via bulk water, air infiltration, and vapor diffusion, and how to mitigate moisture at these conditions.
This is a companion program to Moisture Control for Masonry, and therefore will not address the important topic of moisture. This program analyzes a masonry wall from the vantage point of quality control in both design and construction. It covers ASTM standards, brick and block selection, mortar types, and a detailed discussion of movement control for masonry. The program also looks at acceptable tolerances in materials and workmanship.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
