Brick masonry is made of brick units bonded together with
mortar
• Components: i) Bricks ii) Mortar
• Mortar Act as a cementing material and units the individual
brick units together to act as a homogeneous mass

1.Stretcher
• Brick laid with its length parallel to the front or direction of a wall.
• The course containing stretchers is called a stretcher course
2.Header
• Brick laid with its breadth or width parallel to the front or direction of the wall.
• Course containing headers is called a header course
3.Arrises
• Edges formed by the intersection of plane surfaces of brick
4. Bed
• Lower surface of the brick when laid flat
5. Bed joint
• Horizontal layer of mortar upon which the bricks are
laid
6. Perpends
• Vertical joints separating bricks in either length or cross directions
• For good bond, perpends in alternate courses should be vertically one
above the other
7. Lap
• Horizontal distance between the vertical joints in successive courses
• For good bond, lap should not be less than one-fourth of a brick
8. Closer
• Piece of brick with the cut made longitudinally used to close
up the bond at the end of brick courses
• Helps in preventing the joints of successive courses to come
in a vertical line
• Generally closer is not specially moulded but it is
prepared by the mason with the edge of the trowel
9. Queen closer
• Obtained by cutting the brick longitudinally
in 2 equal parts
10. King closer
• Obtained by cutting a triangular portion of the brick such that half a header
and half a stretcher are obtained on adjoining cut faces
• Used near door and window openings
11. Bevelled closer
• Obtained by cutting a triangular portion of half the width but of full length
• Used for splayed brickwork
12. Mitred closer
• Obtained by cutting a triangular portion of the brick through its width and
making an angle of 45-60 degree with the length of brick
• Used at corners, junctions etc.
13. Bat
• It is portion of brick cut across the width
14.Bullnose
• Brick moulded with a rounded angle
• Used for a rounded quoin
external angle on the face side of wall
15.Cownose
• Brick moulded with a double bullnose on end
16. Frog
• Is a mark of depth about 10-20mm which is placed
brick to form a key for holding the mortar
Method of arranging the bricks in courses
• Individual units are tied together and the vertical joints of the successive
courses do not lie in same vertical line
• Bond types are distinguished by their elevation
• Bond types:
i. Stretcher bond v. English cross bond
ii. Header bond vi. Dutch bond
iii. English bond vii. Brick on edge bond
iv. Flemish bond viii. Raking bond
ix. Garden wall bond

• All bricks are laid with their lengths in the longitudinal direction of the
wall; Thickness = half brick

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

form of rectangular block in which length to
breadth ratio is 2 but height can be different.

The art of laying bricks in mortor in a
proper systematic manner gives
homogeneous mass which can withstand
forces without disintigration, called brick
masonary.

5. Terminology:
The surfaces of a brick have names :
Top and bottom surfaces are beds.
Ends are headers and header faces.
Sides are stretchers or stretcher faces.
Bricks are the subject of British Standard BS
3921.
6. Brick Sizes
A standard metric brick has coordinating
dimensions of 225 x 112.5 x 75 mm
(9''×4½" ×3“) called nominal size and
working dimensions (actual dimensions) of
215 x 102.5 x 65 mm (8.5“ * 4 *2.5) called
architectural size
9. The coordinating dimensions are a measure of the
physical space taken up by a brick together with
the mortar required on one bed , one header face
and one stretcher face.
The working dimensions are the sizes to which
manufacturers will try to make the bricks.
Methods of manufacture for many units and
components are such that the final piece is not
quite the size expected but it can fall within the
defined limits.
This can be due to the things like shrinkage,
distortion when drying out, firing etc.
10. The difference between the working and
coordinating dimensions of a brick is 10mm
(0.5“)and this difference is taken up with the
layer of mortar into which the bricks are
pressed when laying.
The working dimensions are also known as the
nominal size of a brick.

• The depression provided in the face of a brick
during its manufacturing.
• Depth of frog in a brick 10 to 20mm
• Frog should be upward. Why?
Course
Each horizontal layer of bricks laid in mortor
in any brick work is called coarse.
13. Mortar Joints
Mortar placed horizontally below or on
the top of a brick is called a bed.
Mortar placed vertically between
bricks is called a perpend.
14. Bats
• The portions mad by cutting standard bricks
across their width are known as brick bats.
• These are named according their fraction of
full length of a standard brick.

• The portions made by cutting across their
length in such a manner that their one
strecher face remains uncut or half cut.

• The external corners of walls are called quoins
• The brick which form the external corner is
known as quoin brick.

Solid brick shall not have
holes, cavities or
depressions.

exceeding the 25% of
the gross volume of
the brick; minimum
30% solid across the

The usual functional requirements of a masonry wall
include:
i) Adequate strength to support imposed loads
ii) Sufficient water tightness
iii) Sufficient visual privacy and sound transmission
iv) Appropriate fire resistance
v) Ability to accommodate heating, air conditioning,
electrical, and plumbing equipment
vi) Ability to receive various finish materials

23. Bonds In Bricks
• The arrangement of bricks in brick work so
that the vertical joints donot come over each
other.
• Bonds in brick work is provided to achieve a
united mass as soon as practicable to suit the
length, height and thickness of brick work and
stresses to which it is subjected

to provide proper bond in brick masonry

in alternative courses.
